Chapter 29: Chapter 29 Living alone is really awesome
She also bought a small electric scooter for getting around, and there was a charging station for electric scooters and cars right beneath the building. Nowadays, the country has scarce petrochemical resources, but the electrical power supply is fairly stable. Thanks to the construction of many micro nuclear power stations, the country’s daily life and technological advancement didn’t regress to a state before the Industrial Revolution.
She replaced the lock cylinder of the front door, storing the old one in Space, intending to reinstall it later upon moving out. Finally, she used the new broom and mop she had bought to clean away the dust throughout the apartment and then arranged the furniture from Space.
She chose the sunny, south-facing room as her bedroom, where the spacious closet surprisingly managed to accommodate a water pipe clothes rack. The chest for undergarments and light clothing was placed against the wall turned from the closet; next to it was a three-tier drawer chest serving as a nightstand and a single bed. On the other side of the bed was a remote-controlled floor lamp, and turning around, there were the window and a wooden door.
She installed the blackout curtains on the telescopic curtain rod, climbed up to the window to set it up properly, and then closed the door for a light test—the room instantly darkened. It wasn’t pitch black; a small amount of light seeped in at the edges, but this didn’t affect Ye Nai’s sleep. She had slept in the living room for so many years that she had mastered sleeping in such conditions.
The balcony adjacent to the bedroom had a drain and a power socket. The landlord had installed a washbasin, which could share the drain with the washing machine, so Ye Nai placed her washing machine out, covered it with the included sun-protective cover, and set up a foldable clothes drying rack next to it, not only for drying clothes and shoes but also for bed sheets.
There was a console cabinet by the front door, but Ye Nai still placed a multi-functional dressing mirror with wheels, a shoe rack, and a transverse rod for hanging clothes—a preparation for donning and doffing outerwear during different seasons as she went in and out.
...
In the living room, only a lazy sofa and a small mobile coffee table were placed, keeping the rest of the space as empty as possible. In contrast, the kitchen and bathroom were fully furnished, with a dining table, kitchen and dining utensils, and a complete set of toiletries. She even replaced the shower hose and shower head for a fresh touch of life.
The home she grew up in was always too crowded with six people plus household items. If not for Ye Nai’s diligent cleaning daily, the house would have been both dirty and chaotic with nowhere to step, and there wouldn’t even have been space for unfolding a wire bed at night.
Now that she had started living independently, she desired her home to be empty, not wanting to see any unnecessary items. The amount of housework was significantly reduced. Aside from the regular maintenance of the kitchen, dining table, and bathroom, other areas needed cleaning only once in several days to remain tidy.
Living alone was truly wonderful.
While she was making lunch, the cellphone left in the living room kept pinging nonstop. The chat group was getting lively, initially welcoming Ye Nai as their neighbor. Then, swiftly, the conversation changed, and within a few sentences, a late-night snack meet-up was arranged for the evening.
After lunch and a short nap, Ye Nai changed into a long-sleeved shirt and pants, went downstairs again, and rode her electric scooter to work.
Inside the electrical substation, only walking was permitted, so Ye Nai stored her scooter in Space and walked inward. The procedure was the same as in Hazardous Zone 1. Her thousand cubic meter Space directly impressed the work staff, who used an electric tricycle to take her to a trash mountain that had just been piled up. Here, electric tricycles were the transport tools, eliminating the need to manually push carts slowly.
“Hazardous Zone 1 was unavoidable, since it’s almost done. However, with so many people needing to earn a living, they switched to hand-pushed carts to slow down the pace, squeezing out those who couldn’t bear it. Actually, in other hazardous zones, everyone uses tricycles,” the worker explained patiently.
“No wonder. I was thinking, with such a handcart, you’d be tired to death after a whole day, earning only a few dozen yuan.”
“Right, it’s intentional. Anyone who dares to come can earn several hundred a day. Of course, you’re an exception. Let’s hustle a bit. We have a few trash mountains that have been building up for days. We can’t finish hauling them all, really can’t finish.”
“Alright, I’ve got loads of energy when it comes to earning money.”
Ye Nai placed her hand on a trash bag, and in an instant, the entire trash mountain was collected into her Space.
The worker gave her two thumbs up and pointed toward the route leading to the parking lot, signifying that he would wait there for her.
Driving the electric tricycle, Ye Nai arrived at the garbage truck parking lot, where the staff, seeing her empty tricycle, didn’t ask anything extra. Space Users were not uncommon here. Not until a trash mountain suddenly appeared at the empty space at the back of her vehicle did they get the shock of their lives.
The workers around hurried over to see, and Ye Nai also heard a buzzing sound. Looking up, she spotted a drone rapidly approaching, and a person carrying a remote control was running towards it.
“No, no, this won’t do. They can’t all be stacked together like that; spread them out so the drone can photograph them and count the items,”
Someone came to give instructions, and Ye Nai followed their guidance, spreading out some of the waste, noting the count on her back before scooping them up and tossing them into the garbage truck’s hopper, then spreading out the rest.
The parking lot was large, and so was Ye Nai’s Space; she managed to clear a huge mountain of garbage in three batches, with each bag earning her two dollars. This trip alone netted her over ten thousand.
“Haven’t seen you before, you new around here?”
“Yes, I came yesterday.”
“Still delivering?”
“Yep, I’m only on my first run today.”
“Alright, alright, go and come back quick, we’re waiting.”
Ye Nai got on her bike and raced off, while activity buzzed in the lot—red rain from heaven, a Big Space User had arrived.
Back to where she had started, Ye Nai met up with the waiting staff who took her to the next garbage mountain. That pile of unsightly and foul-smelling stuff vanished on the spot, and just watching it disappear felt immensely satisfying.
Ye Nai felt even better.
In Zone 1 of the danger area, she could only earn around ten thousand after a tiring day, but now with her expanded Space, clearing a mountain of garbage could earn her that same amount. She could make several tens of thousands in a day and even spend the afternoon training after working in the morning.
She was absolutely delighted.
After more than three hours of hard work, Ye Nai finished for the day.
It wasn’t that she was tired, nor that the garbage mountains were all cleared. The problem was the garbage trucks were overloaded, and if she continued, there would be no vehicles left to handle the rest of the incoming garbage.
Having arranged to continue working the next morning, Ye Nai took off her protective gear, settled her account, and left.
The news of a Space Awakened with a large capacity arriving in the area spread amongst people working within the danger zone because while Ye Nai was working at the parking lot, many sanitation workers who were also disposing of garbage saw her, and word-of-mouth spread quickly. Worried about competition for work, several leaders of small groups wanted to find this new arrival.
But Ye Nai slipped away too fast to be found, and the staff who knew the details weren’t about to tell others. They even openly warned that if anyone in the danger zone harassed that Big Space User and disrupted normal work, the local tyrants wouldn’t have a good time.
After grabbing a bite to eat on the street, Ye Nai went home to change into her training clothes and then strolled to the shooting range at the training gym. The timing was perfect; she wouldn’t risk throwing up from exercising too soon after eating.
She hadn’t decided yet which martial arts to practice, so she thought about perhaps getting good at shooting first.
She was interested in all the close-combat techniques, making it hard to decide which one to pick. When she talked to the coaches yesterday, she realized it, though vague, but indirectly acknowledged that after learning the basic routines, the advanced content was all about killing techniques.
What do you think?
