Chapter 30: Chapter 30: A Lively and Delicious Late Night Snack Time
By then, once a person committed a crime and got caught, they would face the maximum sentence—certain death if death was an option, no parole if life imprisonment was an option.
To reduce the chances of such dangerous individuals wandering the streets, in addition to legal constraints, there was also compulsory conscription for fighting in the Secret Realm.
Ye Nai felt that level of proficiency was too far from her current self. Instead of daydreaming about future dominance, she might as well think about how to ensure her bullets hit the target.
Fortunately, after she used up the box of bullets that came with the lesson, her shots finally hit the target—all bullets landing in one corner of the target paper.
Although the score wasn’t impressive, the bullet holes were relatively concentrated within the span of a palm, indicating good gun control and minimal muzzle movement during shooting, which was somewhat promising for her shooting intuition.
The coach supervising her perked up at this result, and Ye Nai felt extremely confident. While the lesson hadn’t yet ended, she bought another box of bullets and continued practicing.
...
The initial scores were indeed a good start, as Ye Nai’s performance gradually improved with each magazine. After finishing a box of 50 bullets, she had stabilized between the sixth and eighth rings.
“Not bad, either you miss the target entirely, or once you hit it, it’s like you’ve switched on a hidden shooting mode—every time better than the last,” the coach remarked.
The coach had seen many talented rookies, and Ye Nai showed him a new type of good prospect—progressing from missing the target to stabilizing between the sixth and eighth rings with just two boxes of bullets.
“You have over ten minutes left. How about another box while you’re hot? Don’t worry, I won’t charge extra for overtime, and I can’t keep the bullets anyway. Grab a new box a minute before the class ends; either use them up or leave them—next time, you’ll have to buy new ones.”
“Sure, one more box.”
Ye Nai was delighted. Isn’t this like exploiting a bug? She promptly whipped out her phone and placed the order efficiently—it was delivered in five minutes.
Not rushing as the class time was about to end, Ye Nai relaxed even more. She even wandered off to grab some drinks and cookies, took enough rest, and then wiped her hands before picking up the gun again.
After finishing the box of bullets, just as the coach had said, her scores stabilized solidly between the sixth and eighth rings—never dropping below six or rising to nine, stable without any surprises.
“Not bad, above average. Keep it up. If you ever want to enter the Secret Realm and find a team later, it shouldn’t be difficult.” The coach paused for a moment. “Even if you’re not good at close combat, having consistent shooting skills is an advantage. Not many in private teams shoot well.”
“But shooting skills aren’t any use. You need level 3 to get a license.”
“Well, if someone sees you with a gun outside, they’ll definitely check your permit. But once you’re fighting in the Secret Realm, who cares?”
“Oh—” Ye Nai suddenly realized. There were rules, but the Secret Realm had its own rules.
She kept this in mind and saw that it was about time. Ye Nai said goodbye to the coach, went home to rest, and waited for the snack time late at night.
She had left home after one in the afternoon, factoring in the walking time inside, she started around two, finished more than three hours later, then spent over two hours training with the gun; it was just past eight in the evening, still early.
The air conditioner was on in the living room. She lounged in a lazy chair browsing her phone for an hour, then received a text message and went downstairs to gather.
There was a group of people downstairs, the few team leaders she had met the day before, each with their own team members. Although they were in casual clothes, their commanding presence made them seem formidable. Men and women standing together like that made passersby take a wide berth.
“Wow, is this the rookie you guys met yesterday?”
“Haven’t seen such a spirited rookie in a long time, so cute.”
The female team members pulled Ye Nai into their group, pinching her arm muscles and testing her grip as they all smiled warmly.
Ye Nai felt a bit overwhelmed, having never been treated with such enthusiasm in her life.
“Let’s go, let’s go, the street food stall owner is ready. Kid, can you drink?”
Surrounded by these robust and spirited sisters, Ye Nai and the group chatted and laughed as they walked out of the residential area.
“No, I’ve never drunk before.”
“Hey, hey, hey, what kind of people are you, trying to get the kid to drink right after meeting her.”
“No, no, no, Awakeners can usually drink a bit, believe that you have good tolerance.”
More than ten minutes later, they reached the street food stall, where all the tables and chairs laid out by the owner were already filled, and some passersby who wanted to take away food couldn’t even get the owner’s attention.
Ye Nai had brought her own juice, but everyone else at her feet had whole cases of beer, and soon, a glass appeared in front of her too.
Before the dishes arrived, many had already guzzled down a bottle of beer, then pulled out a new bottle from under the table, and pried off the cap, sending it flying.
Ye Nai picked up her glass and sipped lightly a few times; it was quite fizzy and tasted alright. When a full plate of barbecue was placed in front of her, she coupled each bite of meat with a sip of beer. After two skewers, her beer was gone.
The sisters around her laughed and filled her glass again while grabbing two freshly served grilled shrimp from the next table and placing them on her plate,
The grilled shrimp were so big they covered the entire plate. Ye Nai ate while sweating; she initially thought it was just the hot weather, but then she realized it was not. The energy regeneratively nourished by the spores she released was flowing inside her. The initial dizzy feeling from the alcohol was gone, her consciousness clear and her face flushing.
Finding a new use for her superpower in sobering up, Ye Nai let go of her inhibitions. With the two grilled shrimp down, she had almost finished a whole bottle of beer. Her face was hot and sweaty without any drunkenness, and she was alert, listening to others boasting and sharing intriguing gossip over drinks.
“Kid, you’re doing good, how about another bottle?”
Before Ye Nai could respond, clunk, a newly opened beer was set down, its white foam cascading down the bottle, followed closely by a large plate of freshly grilled pig’s trotters.
She didn’t bother with formalities, filled her glass from the bottle, grabbed a piece of pig’s trotter, and savored the delicious flavor.
“This pork has a strange texture, not like the meat I’ve had in the streets.”
“Chewy, right? And there’s a faint trace of energy flowing inside your body.” The sister on the left took a sip of beer and grabbed a pig’s trotter, laughing as she spoke.
“Uh, seems like it.”
Ye Nai carefully felt it and discerned her own energy from the intermittent flow of a faint foreign energy inside her body each time she swallowed.
“This pork isn’t from an ordinary farm?”
“Not from around here.” The sister gestured with her mouth towards the direction of the Plane Channel.
“Ah…” Ye Nai looked in that direction, suddenly remembering the gossip she heard in Danger Zone One, “I heard that mutant beast meat from there can increase the chances of Awakening in teenagers?”
“Yes, but you have to eat a lot and often. It’s best to replace all the other meat in your home with mutant beast meat, then it can significantly increase the chances.”
What do you think?
