Chapter 41: Chapter 41 The First Mission of the Big Space User (1)
Ye Nai put down her phone, finished her dinner, and took out the stocked beverages and snacks from “Space” to do an inventory check. She ordered a bunch of takeout, which was scheduled for delivery the next day.
The next day, after she received the takeout, she exchanged two large barrels of water with the water station on the street, and bought a lot of ice packs at the convenience store.
After the beverages had been chilled in the refrigerator, she packed them into a foam box lined with ice packs; when it was time to eat on the road, she couldn’t just eat by herself, she would definitely share with others. With this box, the chilled beverages wouldn’t warm up all at once.
At noon, she received a message from Captain Mei, asking if her “Space” could keep things fresh.
[It can keep things fresh, I’ve prepared chilled beverages.]
[That’s great, then let’s meet up half an hour early to go to the cafeteria to get some packed food, we won’t need to bring any dry food if it can fit in your “Space”.]
...
[Sure, I can do that.]
Ye Nai looked at the instant dry food she had bought with takeout and decided to store it in her “Space”; it wouldn’t spoil, and she could snack on it when she felt peckish.
She went to bed early that night and woke up at five in the morning to her alarm. After breakfast, she took down the clothes that had been drying on the balcony all night and hung them back on the pipe hangers, then placed them along with the cupboard into her “Space”.
Her packing was then complete.
She changed into a short-sleeved shirt and cargo pants, made one last check of the water and electricity, locked the door, and went downstairs.
When she arrived at Building 6, she could see from a distance a convoy of four off-road vehicles parked by the roadside, with groups of men and women standing around, dressed in camo short-sleeved shirts and pants, wearing bulletproof vests, with guns slung over their shoulders. Before Ye Nai approached, they saw her and waved her over.
It was only when she got closer that she saw Captain Mei, hidden behind the large vehicles, and she knew it was their team.
“Captain Mei,” Ye Nai greeted first.
“Come, let me introduce you. This is Vice Captain Yang who’s in charge of security, and this is Deputy Captain Shen who’s in charge of logistics. On the way, you’ll mainly deal with Deputy Shen, if you can’t find her, then Vice Captain Yang and lastly, me.”
The whole team was already in mission mode; seeing Ye Nai arrive, Captain Mei didn’t bother with pleasantries and went straight to introducing her to the people she’d be working with.
“Got it.”
Ye Nai didn’t mind the straightforwardness; she simply nodded her head.
“Follow me to the back vehicle.”
Deputy Captain Shen was also a woman. She led Ye Nai to the second vehicle and had her sit in the back alone while Deputy Shen took the passenger seat, and another team member drove.
At a command, the group outside dispersed and got into their vehicles. Ye Nai saw clearly that all other vehicles were full, but hers, counting the driver, only had three people.
It was her first time out on a mission, hired as a mobile warehouse, she knew nothing and dared not ask anything, so Ye Nai just observed, saying nothing.
The convoy left the residential area and followed the big road, turning at every curve; they were heading deep into a dangerous zone and eventually arrived at a military camp, stopping in front of a building adorned with a large “Cafeteria” sign.
“Come on, we’re here to pick up food.”
Deputy Captain Shen led Ye Nai out of the vehicle and into the cafeteria. It was breakfast time in the military camp, and there were quite a few people eating. They went straight into the kitchen and watched as the helpers packed the food on the spot.
The food variety was quite rich – steamed buns, dumplings, rice, noodles, stir-fried dishes, and soup, all bagged and boxed before being loaded into crates.
Deputy Captain Shen was in charge of the count, while Ye Nai watched for a while and then took out her phone to record the packed food boxes.
Her ingrained cashier instincts reminded her that she should always leave a trace of her actions, otherwise, she would get scolded.
She was just a hired portable warehouse, if she didn’t leave a trace, should there be any problem with the supplies, she wouldn’t be able to clear her name.
Deputy Captain Shen noticed Ye Nai’s actions and nodded to himself with some satisfaction, she was a girl who knew how to work.
After leaving the cafeteria, they officially hit the road.
The main road led directly to the Plane Channel, which even from a great distance looked quite oppressive, and as they got closer, Ye Nai felt an even stronger sense of being devoured.
The perimeter of the Plane Channel was built up like a small town, teeming with vehicles and bustling with more activity than Dangerous Zone No. 5, resembling an overcrowded tourist attraction.
“It’s so lively here. Compared to this, the flow of people in Dangerous Zone No. 5 isn’t much at all.”
Ye Nai’s face was practically pressed against the car window, gazing continuously through the glass.
“That was never much to begin with. If it weren’t for the lack of rental housing here, so many Awakeners wouldn’t have flocked to the surrounding areas of Zones 5, 6, and 7. Now you know, even when we set off for a mission, it takes two hours just to get here,” Deputy Captain Shen laughed from the passenger seat.
“Are there Ordinary people living here?”
“Yeah, but the environment is terrible. The kind of group rentals that are banned in the city are rampant here, and they’re even smaller, offering nothing more than a bed, with shared bathrooms.”
“Isn’t that worse than the dormitories?”
“Much worse, they call these group rentals ‘pigeonholes’ here.”
“Luckily I went straight to Dangerous Zone No. 5 and didn’t come this way.”
“Haha, even if you came here, you wouldn’t find a place to stay. The hotels are all long-term rented by combat teams. And with your Space capacity, rashly coming here would not have been good. You were clueless, and others have plenty of ways to coax or force you into signing an unfair contract.”
“That’s right, I Awakened late and all the common knowledge I knew was from online classes. During that time, I was scared of people and making any decision felt like an adventure.”
“How did you decide to go to the Dangerous Zone instead of coming straight here?”
“To make money. Working in Dangerous Zone No. 1 is just a student benefit, earning only about fifty yuan for a day’s work. I had no professional skills, so I could only consider continuing as a garbage collector. At that time, I didn’t have the Awakener APP yet, I was just searching online, and all the information available was about the Dangerous Zones. Maybe that was my luck.”
Ye Nai wasn’t talking nonsense at all. She’d obtained her Awakening Badge on the day she went back to school to pick up her graduation certificate. Before that, she used a cheap flip phone, so the information she found online naturally didn’t include much detail about Awakeners.
“Having good luck at a critical moment is also part of one’s strength.”
As they chatted casually, the convoy left the bustling small town and passed through an electronic gate on the edge, entering a bare and wide avenue that led to the Plane Channel standing between heaven and earth at its end.
“Ah, that’s terrifying.”
Ye Nai couldn’t help but exclaim.
“You’ll get used to it after a few times.”
Deputy Captain Shen responded indifferently. It was the same reaction for anyone coming here for the first time, and some with weaker constitutions even fell ill or had other adverse reactions.
“Here’s something fun, take out your phone and stare at the time on it.”
Ye Nai hurriedly took out her phone and saw that it had just passed 9 o’clock.
The moment they entered the Plane Channel, Ye Nai held her breath.
At first, everything went dark for a second or two, then her vision brightened, and the convoy arrived in a brand new small town, styled with local architecture, which made Ye Nai unable to tell where she was for a moment.
What do you think?
