Chapter 43: Chapter 43 The First Mission of the Big Space User (3)
“Attention, attention, mutant beasts approaching, mutant beasts approaching, warriors attack, warriors attack.”
Ye Nai pulled her electric bike into the Space and dashed into the military camp, where loudspeakers were broadcasting directions to several underground bunkers, directing people to take shelter nearby.
She didn’t head for the underground bunker, as that was for the civilians who conducted business in the area. Instead, she rushed towards the dormitory building, hurried up the stairs to the roof, and looked out towards the unknown creature in the night, following the direction of the searchlights.
Just then, her mobile phone rang. It was Captain Mei.
“Ye Nai, where are you?” The voice on the other end was accompanied by the sound of running breaths and wind.
“I’m on the roof of the dormitory building.”
...
“Good, stay in the camp. If there’s danger, run on your own. Do you know where the nearest bunker is?”
“Yes, don’t worry about me.”
Ye Nai definitely wouldn’t run off recklessly; she didn’t want to become a free buffet for the mutant creatures.
While unobserved, she vigorously mobilized the abundant energy inside her body, spread her arms, and released spores into the sky.
With all the town’s combat personnel deployed, she couldn’t just sit idly by—this was the perfect opportunity to test the combat strength of her spores on the real battlefield, something she had been looking forward to since her Awakening.
After releasing the spores, she prepared to run back to the stair entrance to use it as cover, but then she heard a series of urgent footsteps. Ye Nai immediately switched on her flashlight, casting its beam in that direction, and before she could see who it was, she heard a thunderous shout.
“Who goes there?!”
“I’m here on a mission with Captain Mei. We arrived just over an hour ago, and they’ve gone to the frontlines.”
As Ye Nai lowered her flashlight, aiming the light at the ground at her feet, she quickly explained.
The footsteps dispersed, and in the scattered light from the searchlights around her, Ye Nai could see that the newcomers were a team of warriors armed with large guns, rocket launchers, and ammunition boxes.
A man who seemed to be the officer leading the team approached Ye Nai.
“Are you a civilian?”
“Yes.”
“Why come up here instead of running to the underground bunker?”
“Uh, watching the excitement?”
“Reckless!” The other party barked.
“I’m already up here. Are you going to send me back down? It’s too late for that.”
The other party was momentarily speechless.
“You came with the combat team, just you? An Awakener?”
“Yes, a Space Awakened.”
As she spoke, Ye Nai opened her mobile phone to show her training scores.
“I’m Training Level 2 Beginner; I won’t hold you back. If there’s danger, I’ll be the first to run.”
“Level 2 Beginner? You look quite young, how old are you?” The man looked puzzled, taking the phone to check her name, age, and training scores, “18 years old? Level 2 Beginner just after Awakening?”
“Yes, during a free physical examination in Danger Zone 5, a group of active duty captains vouched for me, allowing me to be promoted directly.”
“Your physical fitness is good. Have you considered enlisting?”
“No, I haven’t.”
“Why?”
“I don’t take orders well.”
“…I can see that.”
The person speaking had truly believed it; if this had been someone obedient, they would have hidden in the underground bunker by now, not wandering around the rooftop.
The warriors nearby, eavesdropping on the conversation, couldn’t help but let out chuckles.
But no matter how you looked at it, having a civilian with Training Level 2 Beginner ranking staying with them did lighten their load a bit. In case of real danger and the need to flee, they wouldn’t have to spare someone to escort them.
They would run on their own.
“How should I address the leader?”
“No need to call me leader, just call me Squad Leader Chen.”
“Alright, Squad Leader Chen, you’re busy, I’ll just sit over here.”
“Mm, stay by the stairwell. If there’s danger, go downstairs immediately, got it?”
“Got it.”
The entire rooftop terrace was open, with only the area near the stairwell serving as a shelter. Ye Nai had been planning to take cover there in the first place, so she immediately ran over, took out her civilian night vision binoculars, and started observing.
The fortifications were set up along the wall
Going by the energy reinforcement she was receiving, the growth rate of the Fungus was incredibly fast. Ye Nai clenched her fists; there wasn’t much increase in strength, but when she had released the spores just now, she had completely drained her spiritual power, yet it seemed to have recovered somewhat in a very short time.
Ye Nai opened her palm, a jolt of spiritual power and a turn of her inner energy, and suddenly, a handful of superpower spores appeared in the center of her hand.
She raised her hand and released another large wave of spores.
The reinforcing energy not only expanded her Space but also continuously replenished her drained spiritual power, another new discovery.
Beforehand, she hadn’t tried this, call it laziness or oversight, but without the need, she wouldn’t think too deeply. It was only on the battlefield that she felt the pressing need to develop her abilities faster and stronger.
Ye Nai took out a chilled drink, squatted leisurely, and released spores whenever a bit of her spiritual power recovered. Compared to the warriors on alert with their guns and cannons by the wall, she, too, engaged in the battle, was incredibly relaxed and comfortable.
The ongoing sound of gunfire from the battlefield kept reaching her, and through the binoculars, Ye Nai observed Awakeners using their superpowers in combat, identifiable by the bursts of colorful light.
Further away, mutant plants and mutant beasts kept rushing in, the Fungal Mycelium not worried about food swiftly grew in numbers, and while releasing spores, Ye Nai purposefully let them drift further away to avoid competing with the warriors for the same prey. Whether it was shot by gun or superpower, and which superpower it was, they could distinguish that, but fungal decomposition traces did not fit any existing knowledge.
Since her superpower had not been detected from the start, she certainly did not want to reveal even a hint now, with no desire to share, Ye Nai relished the secret thrill of “only I know the secret.”
Seeing no end in sight after an hour of combat, Ye Nai began to try something new, communicating with her Fungus using spiritual power to have it, in the case of competing with warriors for prey, claim the prey for her Space first.
She had never communicated this way before, but the process went smoothly; the Fungus responded to her commands as easily as moving her own limbs, and upon giving the orders, Space became busy with the sound of various sized prey dropping in as if it were raining — all odd-shaped, quickly filling up the Space.
Ye Nai quickly gave orders to urge the Fungus to rapidly decompose the prey, to free up a thousand cubic meters without delaying her mission.
The fluffy and cute Space Fungus rippled like water waves, and half an hour later, the number of prey in the Space had not decreased at all, always full to the brim, with every bit of cleared space immediately filled by a new prey.
Ye Nai was somewhat speechless at how many warriors there were involved in the battle, keeping her Fungus constantly busy with claiming prey.
While frequently checking the condition of her Space, Ye Nai noticed something new.
From a mutant beast, which was half-dissolved, something small and luminescent fell out.
Before Ye Nai’s eyes could even focus, the Fungus, as if passing a baton, caught that object and wrapped around it.
Seeing the Fungus take interest in it, Ye Nai hastily called a halt and forcibly extracted it.
What do you think?
