Chapter 74: Chapter 74: Take on a Task from Anyuan City (2)

The car didn’t even stop; the driver floored the accelerator, and the vehicle shot forward, speeding away.

Before speeding out of the Fungus’s sensing range, Ye Nai pleasantly received the news that those few critically injured enemies had died.

Not a single survivor, very good.

After rushing for over half an hour, they finally arrived at the frontline camp. Upon disembarking, a torrent of spores scattered onto the ground.

After identities were verified, logistics personnel from the camp came to take over from the team’s logistics, and Ye Nai quietly followed, first to unload the cargo, and when she returned, she caught an earful of gossip.

The groups that shot at their convoy earlier might really have been civilian Hunting Teams blinded by their desire for the game.

...

“Was it the roar we heard earlier? A really valuable big one?”

“Yes, there might be a migration route for some animals here recently. Anyway, there are large herbivores followed by large carnivores. Although they don’t look like the native animals of Blue Star, the levels in this food chain are still the same.”

“So, to seize game they shoot at us in a frenzied rage, and this has happened many times recently? They just kill oncoming teams first? Even with the distinct markings on our vehicle, they still fear we’re here to snatch their prey? Killing national soldiers in the Secret Realm, how vicious?”

“You’ve never seen it before?”

“Never. I’ve made so many delivery trips and never encountered a civilian combat team fighting in the Secret Realm. This is the first time.”

The two encounters with the Cult Members don’t count; they’re not some civilian combat team, just a pile of dog shit.

“Congratulations on a successful first kill.”

“Thank you.”

“Just remember, in the Secret Realm where interests clash, it’s a fight to the death, and the spoils only go to the one who survives.”

“Thanks for the advice.”

Ye Nai found hunting a bit interesting. With a whole night ahead and not leaving until tomorrow morning, she immediately communicated with and commanded the Fungus outside the camp to rapidly expand. With a whole night to hunt, the prey would leave behind fur and clean meat.

She was also quite curious about the prey that could incite such bloodthirstiness in civilian warriors.

After chatting and not daring to wander off, Ye Nai then went to her assigned dormitory to rest, pulling out her computer desk. Before departing, she had downloaded e-books on medical studies using the hotel’s internet since the camp had no access to the web. It was an ideal opportunity to immerse herself in learning.

Three high-definition large screens made studying a breeze; the main screen was used for taking notes, while the two side screens displayed text and image material, landscape or portrait as desired. She was slow at typing, but the computer operated flawlessly.

After eating and returning, the first prey appeared in the Fungal Space. It resembled a bull, with broad quadruple horns; one pair spread out horizontally, another pair grew vertically, their tips slightly curved like hooks. Its shoulders were high and its back sloped, a mass of muscle at a glance.

It was a herbivore.

The creature was very large, seemingly larger than any common livestock, but without a ruler, Ye Nai couldn’t measure it. Eventually, she found an object for scale.

Compared to the front of her newly purchased four-wheeled tractor, its shoulder height was at least over three meters.

Truly a giant.

This Otherworld wild bull kicked off the Fungus’s hunting rhythm, with one after another getting captured.

As she collected more, human corpses and their weapons were also pulled in.

Ye Nai paid no mind at all, as the Fungus hunted one thing after another; she was already accustomed to the commotion in the Space.

It wasn’t until she finished with the computer desk and prepared to wash up and go to sleep that she glanced at the Space and got a scare from the sight of corpses and weapons.

But it was just a fleeting scare, and she soon forgot about it, turned off the lights, and went to bed for a good night’s sleep.

When the alarm woke her up, she first checked the Space, where all kinds of carnivorous animals had also been brought in. After a night of diligent work by the Fungus, only clean pelts and edible chunks of clean meat remained, along with four Heart Cores glowing faintly like little stars, the size of soybeans and in three colors.

At last, there were Heart Cores again, and Ye Nai happily placed them in a special box made for storing them.

The human corpses, of course, didn’t leave behind a single hair, the only proof that they had ever existed on this earth being the indecomposable man-made items.

Looking at the leftover personal belongings, it seemed that the Fungus had ambushed the nocturnal Hunting Team. The properly encamped teams hadn’t been touched because not a single piece of essential overnight gear, such as tents or sleeping bags, was missing.

Ye Nai controlled the surging Fungus, sorting different items into separate piles. She directly threw the pelts into the trailer, then took out a new turnover box to pack the pile of clean meat before storing it in the trailer as well.

The last pile of man-made goods would have to wait for another chance to be disposed of as trash.

After breakfast, the entire team assembled and set off for the final frontline camp.

The warriors at the camp had a relatively peaceful day, with occasional gunshots heard from far away, too faint to make out clearly.

It wasn’t until evening when a Hunting Team set up camp nearby and came to exchange a few pieces of clean meat for fresh water that they talked about potentially encountering a formidable team in the wilderness. The animals had been scared off, and after a day of pursuit, they hadn’t managed to hunt more than a few, suffering a loss.

To frighten away the large Otherworld animals unafraid of humans, that team must have had tremendous combat strength.

The warriors found it unlikely, thinking no private team could have combat strength beyond the national army. In their view, it was more probable that the animal groups had moved on by themselves, and this team had simply missed their chance.

But the warriors didn’t bother to argue this point; they exchanged water, got an update on the situation in the wilderness, and that was that.

Ye Nai also had a smooth day; they set off early in the morning and now, as dusk was falling, they had traveled the entire daylight span and could finally see the lights of the last mission’s frontline camp.

The success of the previous night’s hunt had paid off; they encountered neither mutant plants nor mutant beasts along the way, likely because they had been frightened off, allowing their caravan unobstructed passage. They drove as if flying, and even then felt like they were flying too low.

When they arrived, the place was in battle, with the incessant ping-pang of gunshots ringing in their ears.

“Oh-ho…”

After a day of riding in the vehicle, their mouths idle, everyone was chewing on the spicy roasted meat jerky Ye Nai had shared. At the first sound of gunshots, everyone quickly stuffed the jerky into their mouths and another hand rested on their guns, ready to disembark and provide support at any moment.

The car radio crackled to life, broadcasting the voice of the lead vehicle’s team leader.

“All units, urgent mission, the frontline camp is under attack by a swarm of Mutant Beast Spiders. Form defensive formations, main battle members follow me for reinforcement. Others hold your positions and maintain communication. Over.”

“Second vehicle understands. Over.”

“Third vehicle…”

“Fourth vehicle…”

“Fifth vehicle…”

The driver slammed on the brakes, following the lead vehicle to adjust the vehicle’s direction, forming a circle with the cars head to tail.

Everyone got out and stood within the circle, illuminated by the bright vehicle lights. The logistics team members took out all the team’s weapons from the Space—both firearms and melee weapons—with everyone picking what they could use and splitting into two groups.
