Chapter 2: The White Witch
Although Bai An'an had the intellect of an eighteen-year-old, her body was still that of a six-year-old girl. So by the time she had made her way to Gu Xue's school and found her target in the sea of people, the latter had already been waiting for her for some time.
Despite Bai An'an arriving later than usual today, when Gu Xue saw her little sister coming to pick her up, she still wore a smile. It seemed her mood was quite good today.
"Xue Xue, sorry to keep you waiting~"
Bai An'an ran up to Gu Xue, calling out in her childish voice, while Gu Xue skillfully stroked Bai An'an's smooth black hair.
"It wasn't long at all. The teacher wanted to speak with me today, so I only waited a few minutes. Now let's hurry home."
"Okay."
Bai An'an nodded, then let Gu Xue lead her toward the orphanage. However, at that moment, her mind was replaying what Gu Xue had just said.
The teacher wanted to speak with Xue Xue today? And seeing how happy Xue Xue looks, could it be...?
Remembering how in her previous life, Gu Xue had skipped grades continuously and gone abroad to study at the age of 15, Bai An'an's heart began to feel anxious.
Although she had prepared herself long ago for the possibility of being separated from Gu Xue again, now that the moment seemed to be approaching, she couldn't help feeling heartbroken.
According to her experience in her previous life, if Gu Xue's mother didn't keep her, then when she reached a certain age, she would once again be expelled from the orphanage, returning to a life of wandering...
No, now she was a girl. Perhaps things would be better than in her previous life, and she might be adopted? Or when she was expelled from the orphanage, someone might take a liking to her and make her a young bride.
After all, she was a girl now, so naturally, she would marry a man when she grew up, right?
"Ugh..."
Though she said this to herself, Bai An'an, who had already accepted that she was a girl, still found it difficult to accept being with a man, especially after being spoiled by Gu Xue.
Forget about men—if a woman wasn't as good as Gu Xue, Bai An'an probably wouldn't choose her either.
Indeed... in this life, she would still be alone...
"An'an, what's wrong? We're home now."
Perhaps because Bai An'an's anxiety about the future caused her to grip Gu Xue's hand tighter and tighter, Gu Xue noticed something was wrong. She stopped, crouched down, and gently asked her adorable little sister.
"Ah..." Bai An'an snapped back to reality, only now realizing that she had unconsciously arrived at the orphanage entrance. "I'm fine, just thinking about some things for the future."
Bai An'an tried hard to put on a happy expression, but her six-year-old body didn't seem to have the acting skills for it. Her originally sad little face eventually transformed into a strange expression that was both sad and smiling.
Though it was still very cute.
"Pfft..." Gu Xue was amused by Bai An'an's strange attempt to hide her feelings and couldn't help laughing. "Those future things are too far away. An'an, don't worry so much. How could such a cute girl like you not be wanted by anyone? Don't worry."
Gu Xue didn't know that Bai An'an was reborn. After comforting her with a few words, she led Bai An'an into the orphanage.
Just as they entered the orphanage, several children about Bai An'an's age ran out of the house, rushing to get to Gu Xue first.
"Sister Xue, you're finally back! Did anything fun happen at school today?"
A little boy, pulling on Gu Xue's skirt, asked excitedly.
"Sister Xue, don't listen to him! What did the teacher teach today? Tell us quickly."
Another little girl pushed the boy away and asked very seriously.
Indeed, Gu Xue was not only the daughter of the orphanage's caretaker but also the teacher for these children. Because these children had no parents or homes, and because the orphanage was so small that no educational institution was willing to cooperate, none of them, including Bai An'an, had the opportunity to go to school. They could only acquire knowledge from Gu Xue, the only one among them who could attend school.
Of course, no adult would believe that a ten-year-old girl could properly teach others, but only Bai An'an knew that Gu Xue truly had that ability.
"Ahem, I need to speak with my mother about something today. I'll tell you all later, okay?"
Gu Xue led Bai An'an out from the group of children and went to the kitchen, where, sure enough, Gu Xue's mother was cooking.
"Mom, I have good news to tell you today!"
Gu Xue let go of Bai An'an's hand and eagerly approached her mother. Bai An'an leaned against the doorframe, eavesdropping on the conversation between Gu Xue and her mother.
As Bai An'an had feared, what she dreaded most happened.
Gu Xue immediately began talking about how the teacher had approached her to discuss skipping grades and various competitions. Upon hearing this, her mother's face lit up with joy.
No mother wouldn't be happy about her child's bright future.
But this warm and happy scene only made Bai An'an, who had always been alone, feel more heartbroken.
Because this was someone else's happiness, not hers.
Bai An'an lowered her head, turned around, and began running along the corridor toward her room.
As for what Gu Xue said afterward, Bai An'an could no longer hear. She only knew that her mood was terrible now, and she just wanted to enter dreamland to taste its only sweetness.
This was the only and cheapest way for a six-year-old girl to find happiness at this moment.
Talk about starting a perfect new life—it was simply wishful thinking. She should be content with being reborn and getting a second chance at life.
Bai An'an knew the layout of the orphanage by heart. Even with her head down, she could still find her way to where she wanted to go through muscle memory.
Just ahead, just around that corner, she could return to the warmth of her bed.
However, when she reached that corner, she crashed into a soft embrace.
"Little sister, running so hurriedly can easily lead to bumping into people and falling down."
A gentle voice came from above. Looking up, Bai An'an realized she had bumped into a big sister wearing black sunglasses, with a red rose in her hair and long, straight black hair.
The big sister had a faint scent of roses, which was very pleasant. However, since Bai An'an was solely focused on returning to her bed to have a good cry, she didn't pay much attention to this big sister. She just lowered her head, apologized, and left directly.
"I'm sorry... um, I need to go now. See you later!"
With that, Bai An'an left.@@novelbin@@
"It's alright. We'll meet again very soon."
The big sister revealed a meaningful smile and began walking toward the orphanage director's office.
Back in her room, Bai An'an quickly climbed onto her bed, covered herself with the blanket, and began to sob.
For the past six years, Bai An'an had maintained a facade of happiness through self-consolation, but in reality, she had no expectations for her future, which seemed so predictable.
In her previous life, she had been a useless person who didn't understand anything. What difference would it make to live again? To experience being abandoned twice? Or to feel Gu Xue leaving her four years earlier?
"If only... I had a mother too... then I would never be abandoned..."
Bai An'an lay on the bed, tears falling drop by drop onto her pillow. The little girl's eyes had already become red and swollen from crying for too long. The long-awaited drowsiness finally came.
"Sleep peacefully, Bai An'an. Things will be better tomorrow..."
Bai An'an patted her own chest, then hugged herself tightly, mumbling as she fell into her dreams.
Not long after she fell asleep, a white-haired young woman dressed in a pure white lace dress, wearing a pointed witch's hat, appeared beside her. Her deep blue eyes gazed tenderly at the trembling girl under the blanket.
"Sleep, my little one. The White Night Witch will always protect you..."
What do you think?
