Chapter 3: I Have a Mother Now
In her dream, Bai An'an dreamed that she had turned back into a boy. As she was preparing to leave the orphanage, Mrs. Gu and Gu Xue took her in, giving her the first person she could call "mother" and someone who could accompany her through life.
Eventually, she would marry Gu Xue and have a child. Perhaps later, Gu Xue would work outside the home as a young and beautiful professor, while she would be a house husband, taking care of their child and waiting for her beloved to return home.
Just like that, they would reach the end of life without any regrets.
But as the dream gradually faded with her awakening consciousness, despite Bai An'an's desperate desire not to leave this perfect dream, it was no use. She opened her red eyes.
Sitting up, looking through the window at the sunlight on her little dress that only young girls would wear, and the black long hair spread over her shoulders, reality reminded Bai An'an that it was just a dream.
"It's morning... I should get up, otherwise I won't be able to see Xue Xue's back as she leaves for school."
Shaking her little head, Bai An'an muttered to herself while hastily putting on her coat and hurrying out of bed, rushing toward the cafeteria.
But when she arrived at the cafeteria, an unexpected scene appeared before her. The few children of the orphanage were sitting in the cafeteria, including Gu Xue who should have been at school. Mrs. Gu, seeing her arrival, smiled and patted the seat beside her, with a look of satisfaction in her eyes.
It was as if everyone present had been waiting for her.
What's going on?@@novelbin@@
Seeing such a strange scene, Bai An'an carefully recalled her previous life, but no matter how hard she thought, she couldn't remember any such serious occasion.
Especially since Gu Xue, the genius girl, hadn't gone to school and was waiting for her.
"An'an, don't just stand there, come quickly, it's time to eat."
Seeing Bai An'an standing dazed, Gu Xue stood up and gently took her small hand, just like usual. But Bai An'an felt that, compared to Mrs. Gu, Gu Xue seemed a bit unhappy today.
After being led to Mrs. Gu's side by Gu Xue, Bai An'an finally asked.
"Xue Xue, why didn't you go to school today? I don't think it's the weekend, is it?"
"I took the morning off because there's something concerning you today."
"Concerning me...?"
Bai An'an pointed at herself, hardly believing her ears.
"Yes, you're the main character today, An'an."
Mrs. Gu took over from Gu Xue and enthusiastically put several dishes into Bai An'an's bowl.
"Let's eat first, and then we'll talk after the meal."
Mrs. Gu rubbed Bai An'an's little head, and Bai An'an, not knowing what to say, could only eat her food in small bites.
Although she didn't know why she felt somewhat down today, she had to admit that today's food was the best she had ever eaten. It wasn't to disparage previous meals, but because those usually contained things she didn't like, such as pumpkin and tomatoes, which didn't appeal to her appetite.
But today, not only were there no pumpkins or tomatoes she disliked, but even things she loved in her previous life were served, whether it was roast duck, roast chicken, or other delicacies.
So before long, Bai An'an was completely full, slumping in her chair, and the earlier tension had eased considerably thanks to the satisfying meal.
"Mrs. Gu, I've finished eating. So, can you tell me why Xue Xue took time off because of me today?"
Of course, Bai An'an hadn't forgotten what she wanted to know.
Mrs. Gu, hearing Bai An'an's question, put down her bowl and looked very gently at the little girl with black hair and red eyes before her.
"Bai An'an, would you like to have a home?"
"Home?"
Bai An'an tilted her head, appearing not to understand, but somehow, she seemed to sense something.
"Yes, a home with a mother. An'an, would you like to have a mother? A real mother?"
Hearing Mrs. Gu say this, Bai An'an was stunned, her thoughts returning to yesterday's dream. In the dream, Mrs. Gu had said the same thing to her.
And next was...
"I want one!" Bai An'an shouted without hesitation, looking at Mrs. Gu with eyes full of expectation, as if looking at a real mother.
"Good!" Mrs. Gu, seeing Bai An'an agree, suddenly called toward the outside.
"Director, please bring Miss Bai in."
"Eh?"
Hearing this, Bai An'an was suddenly dumbfounded. At that moment, the door was pushed open, and the familiar elderly director walked in, followed by someone who looked very familiar to her.
A loose, high-quality red coat, black stockings wrapping long legs, and a pair of red high heels inlaid with red gems.
Of course, what was most familiar to Bai An'an was that beautiful, enviable oval face, and the red rose pinned in her long black hair.
Wasn't this the big sister she had accidentally bumped into yesterday when running back to her room?
"Big sister?!"
Bai An'an exclaimed in disbelief, her red eyes wide open.
Things seemed quite different from what she had imagined...
"Eh, An'an, you know her?"
"No, I just accidentally bumped into this big sister yesterday when I was going back to sleep..."
"Ahem, Miss Bai, this is Bai An'an. I'll leave you two to talk now."
The director, seeing that Bai An'an wasn't very resistant to this woman, couldn't help but sigh with relief before leaving the cafeteria.
The big sister nodded very kindly, then walked toward Bai An'an under the envious gaze of the other children.
"An'an, this is Miss Bai, whose full name is Bai Xuerou. She is..."
"No need for Aunt Gu to say more, let me talk with my child."
Before Mrs. Gu could finish, the big sister interrupted, crouched down, and looked at Bai An'an while taking off her sunglasses.
Under the sunglasses were eyes that were identical to Bai An'an's—red pupils.
To the other children, this big sister looked exactly like what Bai An'an would look like when she grew up.
Bai An'an, seeing Gu Xue give her a somewhat lost look before leaving the cafeteria with Mrs. Gu and the other children, understood what was happening.
Having lived eighteen years in her previous life, how could she not understand what was going on?
She was going to be adopted, but not by Mrs. Gu as she had imagined, but by a big sister she had never met in either her previous or current life.
"Big sister, are you... here to adopt me?"
Even though the big sister before her was beautiful and seemed gentle, Bai An'an still sensed a kind of dangerous aura, making her shrink back a little.
"No, I'm not here to adopt you," Bai Xuerou shook her head, then corrected, "I'm here to take you home. I am your birth mother."
Bai Xuerou took out a piece of paper from her coat, which was a DNA paternity test between Bai An'an and herself.
Although Bai An'an hadn't gone to school much before, she had heard of such things. Seeing the prominent 99.99% on the paper, Bai An'an was silent for a while.
She wondered why this big sister hadn't found her in her previous life but had come now?
Moreover, what she cared about even more was, wasn't she abandoned? How come now they wanted to find her again?
Although she wasn't being adopted by Mrs. Gu, Bai An'an wasn't actually very resistant. After all, she now had a mother. But those thoughts still bothered her, making her cautious.
Bai Xuerou seemed to see through what Bai An'an was thinking and, with a bitter smile, stroked her head and said softly.
"An'an, I know what you're thinking, but let's go home first. When we get home, I'll tell you why I had to leave you back then."
"Now, can you call me 'Mom'?"
"Hmm..." Bai An'an looked at the big sister in front of her, thought for a moment, and then nodded, calling out those two words in a soft, sweet voice.
"Mom."
After saying it, Bai An'an took a deep breath. Including her previous life, it had been twenty-four years, and she had finally said those two words she had been longing for.
But why, after saying it, didn't she feel happy? It was completely different from when Gu Xue called her mother...
"Mmm~ good girl. I've already completed the paperwork with the director. Let's go home now."
Hearing Bai An'an call her "Mom," Bai Xuerou nodded with great satisfaction, then picked up her daughter and walked out of the orphanage. As soon as Bai An'an came out, a red Rolls-Royce was waiting at the entrance.
Mom seems to really like the color red...
Bai An'an thought silently, but the next second, she seemed to remember something and quickly looked back, finding that the girl she had been thinking about was at the door watching her, looking quite pitiful.
Yes, the little sister she had raised and cared for for six years was being taken away. What sister wouldn't be sad, even if that sister was very intelligent?
"Mom, put me down for a moment!"
Bai An'an quickly called out to Bai Xuerou, who, although not knowing what Bai An'an wanted to do, saw her daughter suddenly so excited and put her down.
As soon as Bai An'an was put down, she ran toward Gu Xue. Seeing her sister suddenly running toward her, Gu Xue also understood Bai An'an's intentions and slowly walked toward her, step by step.
Watching the two children running toward each other, Bai Xuerou just shook her head helplessly.
"Two girls running toward each other? How nice. But unfortunately, a witch and a human can never be together, let alone the strongest witch..."
"An'an, why did you come back?"
"Xue Xue, your phone number. I'm afraid I'll never see you again."
Bai An'an said haltingly, tears in her eyes.
Hearing this, Gu Xue immediately ran back to get paper and pen, wrote down her mother's phone number, and handed it to Bai An'an.
"Xue Xue, I'm leaving. If there's a chance in the future, I'll find you."
After putting the note Gu Xue gave her into her pocket, Bai An'an said goodbye to Gu Xue, her former "moon," and returned to Bai Xuerou's side.
"Okay, Mom, let's go."
"Mm."
Seeing that her daughter had settled her concerns, Bai Xuerou smiled radiantly, carried Bai An'an to the back seat of the Rolls-Royce, and went to the front seat to drive.
Now that her daughter had done what she needed to do, she could focus on what came next.
As the eye-catching red Rolls-Royce disappeared from sight, Gu Xue silently clenched her fist.
"That big sister looks so gentle and so rich, An'an should be able to live well, like a princess..."
What do you think?
