Chapter 28: Twisted Madness
"Wh... what?" Bai An'an's hand suddenly loosened its grip on the phone. She stared at the red phone that had fallen onto the wooden floor and stepped back. "You... you're not Xuexue! Who are you?!"
The person on the other end of the phone sounded somewhat annoyed by Bai An'an's outburst.
"Yeye, what are you talking about? I am Xuexue, except that it's the 'Xue' from Bai Xuerou."
As the last sentence was spoken, cold sweat broke out on Bai An'an's body, because she realized that the final words weren't coming from the phone—they were coming from behind her!
She felt a familiar sensation against her back, the feeling she experienced every night: two enormous mountains pressing firmly against her back.
Trembling, she turned her head and discovered that Bai Xuerou had somehow awakened and was now leaning against her back, lips pressed against her ear.
"How about that? Quite a surprise, isn't it?"
Bai Xuerou laughed softly, lively and beautiful, but to Xia Mu's ears, it was no different than a demon's triumphant chuckle.@@novelbin@@
Indeed, from the moment Bai Xuerou had positioned her on the sofa facing outward, and even placed the phone on the table, she should have realized it.
This was a trap, through and through...
"I'm... I'm sorry, Mom... I was just... being a little disobedient... I..."
Bai An'an tried to explain, but before she could say much more, Bai Xuerou silenced her with a single finger.
Now, any explanation Bai An'an could offer seemed utterly feeble compared to her tearful confession over the phone moments ago.
Even if Bai Xuerou hadn't forced her to stop, Bai An'an would have found herself unable to continue. Today, she had revealed far too many vulnerabilities.
"Really now, if you dislike Mom so much, you should just tell me directly. Why talk to outsiders?"
Bai Xuerou turned her daughter, who was too frightened to move, to face her. She gently wiped the tears from Bai An'an's face with her sleeve. But the gentler she was, the more terrified Bai An'an became.
And indeed, just as Bai An'an had feared, after Bai Xuerou finished wiping away her tears, familiar vines and roses appeared from behind Bai Xuerou.
"No... no... please, no!"
Fear surged from her heart, forcing Bai An'an to close her eyes and scream in terror. She pushed against Bai Xuerou's outstretched hands, attempting one final act of resistance.
But after Bai An'an closed her eyes and braced herself, the expected horror—like having something stuffed into her mouth—never came. Instead, she heard He'er's muffled voice in her ear.
"Master, wake up! Wake up!"
"Mmm?"
Bai An'an slowly opened her eyes. Before her was not Bai Xuerou's terrifying face, but He'er's pretty face.
He'er was looking at Bai An'an with concern, eyeing the scratch marks all over her arms.
"I... what is this?"
Bai An'an looked around and found herself still lying on the sofa, covered with a blanket. There was no sign she had gotten up, Bai Xuerou was nowhere to be seen, and there was no phone on the table.
"Phew... I'm glad you're okay. You suddenly became agitated and noisy while sleeping. You nearly scared me to death..."
Seeing that Bai An'an was fine, He'er tried to wipe the cold sweat from her forehead, but when her scratched arm accidentally touched her forehead, she inhaled sharply in pain.
This caught the attention of the newly awakened Bai An'an. The scratches on He'er's arm were deep and didn't look like they'd been made by a cat or dog; they looked more like human scratches.
Bai An'an quickly pulled her hands out from under the blanket. Her fingers were still clean and white, but even so, she noticed a reddish substance on her little finger.
"Hey, Sister He'er," Bai An'an sniffed her little finger and caught the scent of iron, confirming her suspicion that she had caused He'er's injuries.
"The wounds on your arm—I made them while I was sleeping, didn't I?"
"Of course not!" He'er immediately objected, deliberately acting as if she wasn't in pain. "Master, you were just having a nightmare while you slept. This injury, I did it myself..."
"No need to say more, Sister He'er. Even if you cleaned my nails thoroughly, there would still be traces left."
Bai An'an pointed to her blood-stained little finger, indicating that He'er didn't need to pretend anymore—she already knew.
"Tsk..." He'er looked away embarrassedly and scratched her head.
No joke—she was a Level Two Magician, and although she wasn't very old, she was considered one of the most talented people in the courtyard. How could she admit to being caught off guard by a child about her age who attacked her in her sleep?
"How does it feel? Does it hurt? If it hurts, you should find Sister Yan. She probably has something to disinfect it..."
Bai An'an held He'er's wrist, looking at the bloody wounds on her hand with guilt.
Bai An'an never imagined she would hurt someone during a nightmare. This had never happened when she used to sleep with Gu Xue.
"It's... it's fine! You're so clean, how could you possibly be toxic? But what about you? Just now while you were sleeping, you were shouting something about Xuexue. That Xuexue isn't your mother, is it?"
He'er didn't dare say Bai Xuerou's name directly, but Bai An'an understood what she meant and immediately shook her head.
"No, it's not her. It's a friend I had before coming here. Her name is Gu Xue. She's a very smart and gentle girl. Everyone calls her the genius girl."
When Bai An'an talked about Gu Xue, her eyes practically glowed, leaving He'er stunned. This was the first time she had seen Bai An'an with such an admiring expression.
But thinking that the person Bai An'an cherished wasn't herself made He'er feel a bit unhappy.
"What genius girl... I've never heard of her even when people called me a genius..."
He'er muttered quietly, but quickly realized there was a hole in Bai An'an's story.
"Wait, if Gu Xue is your friend, why would you have nightmares about her and even attack others in your sleep?"
"About that, it's because..." Bai An'an shuddered as she recalled the nightmare, and after checking that Bai Xuerou wasn't around, she leaned into He'er's ear.
"Because I was actually dreaming about... Bai Xuerou, not Gu Xue."
"Pfft..."
After Bai An'an finished speaking, He'er couldn't help but laugh.
What? That's exactly what she had said!
While the two girls were joking around, in a room at the end of the second floor, Bai Xuerou was stroking a photo of herself with the White Night Witch, an eerie smile on her face, her phone tossed aside.
"Just by using the authority of madness to create a dream, she revealed everything. That damned human girl—I should never have allowed her to maintain contact with my Yeye... It seems I need to move up the date of Yeye's return..."
Bai Xuerou's eyes flashed with dangerous red light, completely at odds with her usual gentle demeanor. She looked like a madwoman.
But at this moment, Bai Xuerou failed to notice a familiar phone number in the call history on her phone.
What do you think?
