Chapter 5: Miss Yan
"Ugh... my head is spinning. Where am I?"
Rubbing her dizzy, uncomfortable head, Bai An'an struggled to sit up in bed, looking bewildered at the unfamiliar room before her.
The spacious, bright, and clean room was filled with stuffed animals covering an entire wall, a dressing table, and a huge floor-length mirror. She was wearing silky, comfortable pink pajamas—all things that Bai An'an had never seen in her two lifetimes of poverty.
For a moment, Bai An'an thought she was dreaming, because only in dreams would she ever possess such wonderful things.
As her consciousness gradually cleared, Bai An'an quickly remembered what had happened before she passed out.
"No, this isn't a dream. My mother found me and brought me home..." Bai An'an's eyes gradually became clear, then revealed an excited expression.
"Is this... this my home?!"
Bai An'an had imagined her mother was wealthy, but she hadn't imagined her mother was THIS wealthy!
This room was as large as the orphanage's dining hall, and the bed was ridiculously huge—as big as an entire dining table. If it weren't so soft and bouncy, she might have thought she'd been placed on a table.
It seemed she might be the child of a rich family?
Bai An'an kept reminding herself not to get too excited, but her uncontrollable surprise and wandering eyes had already betrayed her thoughts.
"If Xuexue could come here, she would definitely be shocked too, right?"
Bai An'an couldn't help thinking, but the next moment she shook her head.
No, Gu Xue was a genius girl, how could she be impressed by just this?
Hmm! That being the case, she shouldn't act like a country bumpkin either.
After silently giving herself a pep talk, Bai An'an didn't immediately leave through the bedroom door, but instead put on the white bunny slippers beside the bed and went to the window.
Moving the window aside, Bai An'an looked out and realized her imagination had been too limited. The room she was in was probably on the second floor, but seeing the vast forests outside and the long walls, she began to understand this wasn't just a house—it was a mansion!
She was starting to wonder if she might be the daughter of some noble lady, to be able to live in such a place.
Looking at the dim sky outside, Bai An'an didn't know how long she had slept, but her little stomach was already rumbling, suggesting she'd been hungry for some time.
"Hmm... I'm hungry. Should I leave the room?"
Not having fully explored her room yet, Bai An'an didn't really want to leave, but as her stomach continued to issue commands, she chose to step out.
Taking a deep breath, then standing on tiptoe to grab the doorknob, Bai An'an had barely pushed the door open a crack when she smelled the aroma of food and heard the sound of cooking coming from the first floor.
Could it be her mother cooking dinner?
At the thought of that beautiful big sister cooking dinner for her, Bai An'an couldn't help but hum happily.
This truly was the difference between a child with a mother and a child without—one was treasured, the other was like grass.
Pushing the door completely open, she saw another room to the side, a bathroom opposite, and a passage to the right.
Bai An'an followed the aroma down that passage and quickly found the stairs. The staircase was equally spacious, with golden handrails on both sides and two giant dragon statues at the bottom, looking as if they were standing guard.
Bai An'an held the handrail and went down step by step. Soon, the staircase ended, and as soon as she came down, she saw a spacious living room with huge sofas, and opposite them, a giant television hanging on the wall.
On the dining table nearby, two dishes had already been placed, and busy sounds were coming from the kitchen next to the living room.
"Let's go see Mom, maybe I can help her..."
Bai An'an didn't intend to be a useless freeloader; her conscience wouldn't allow it, so she wanted to see if she could help with anything.
Bai An'an took small steps toward the kitchen, but perhaps because she wasn't used to such comfortable slippers, just as she caught sight of a white-haired woman in a maid's outfit cooking, she suddenly felt her center of gravity drop.
"Ahh!"
Bai An'an painfully rubbed her head, tears welling in her eyes.
She had actually fallen on flat ground!
This was a mistake only little children made! Though she was only six years old physically, her mental age was already 24.
No... she couldn't embarrass herself in front of her mother. She had to get up quickly!
Bai An'an was afraid that if her mother saw her looking so foolish, she might abandon her again. She desperately tried to stand up, but her body seemed to disobey her and wouldn't rise.
Just as Bai An'an was feeling discouraged, she suddenly felt a pair of hands lifting her under her arms, and then her entire body sank into a warm embrace.
Oh no!
Bai An'an's internal alarm bells went off, and she closed her eyes, afraid to face reality.
"Why so careless? Did the young miss hurt herself anywhere?"
Instead of the expected scolding from her mother, there was a gentle inquiry, and the form of address surprised Bai An'an.
Young miss?
Bai An'an slowly opened her eyes, and upon seeing the person in front of her clearly, she realized it wasn't her black-haired, red-eyed mother who had picked her up, but a white-haired, red-eyed big sister wearing a maid's outfit.
This big sister's beauty shocked Bai An'an, as she felt this sister's beauty was on par with her mother's, just in a different style.
Her mother exuded charm and intelligence, while this big sister embodied gentle purity.
"Big sister?"@@novelbin@@
Bai An'an quickly remembered that this big sister was the figure she had just seen cooking in the kitchen, and she immediately relaxed.
As long as her mother hadn't discovered her blunder...
"Young miss, please don't address me so respectfully. My name is Yan, and I am the maid for you and Lady Bai Xurou."
"Maid?"
Bai An'an tilted her head, as if pondering the big sister's words, but she quickly shook her head.
"Then I'll call you Sister Yan!"
Bai An'an knew something about the meaning of the word "maid," but she didn't want to approach others with a superior attitude, especially such a beautiful big sister.
"Young miss, I—"
"That's enough, Yan. Whatever An'an says goes. I don't mind."
Just as the maid was about to say something, Bai Xurou suddenly appeared from behind and stopped her, gently coming to Yan's side and taking Bai An'an from her.
"You've been resting in your room for a day, and now you must be hungry."
Bai Xurou placed Bai An'an on a small chair at the dining table—a chair that fit her perfectly—and happily clapped her hands.
"There's one more dish in the kitchen. I'll bring it out, and then you can eat."
Yan looked at the harmonious mother and daughter, her eyes filled with mixed emotions, but she turned and went to the kitchen to serve the food and rice, while Bai An'an and Bai Xurou just waited at the table.
As the last dish was served, Bai An'an was amazed to discover that these were all her favorite foods.
Roast duck, braised chicken, braised pork, and several other dishes.
"Sister Yan, thank you!"
Bai An'an couldn't help but call out happily to the maid standing nearby, and Yan just nodded gently.
"As long as An'an likes it. Now, let's eat quickly~"
Bai Xurou shifted her daughter's attention from Yan to herself, and put some food in the girl's bowl, smiling as she spoke.
"Mm!"
Bai An'an nodded and began eating the meat in her bowl, but after just a few bites, she looked up again.
"Is something wrong, An'an?"
Bai Xurou, who had been admiring her daughter's eating, asked curiously when she saw Bai An'an suddenly stop.
"Nothing, I just don't understand. Isn't Sister Yan going to eat?"
Bai An'an pointed to the maid standing nearby, giving her mother a pleading look.
"..."
The smile on Bai Xurou's face gradually faded, turning cold, but for the sake of maintaining her daughter's good impression, she looked toward Yan, her eyes communicating something unspoken.
"Well, since the young miss insists, I shall respectfully comply."
Yan took a deep breath under Bai Xurou's gaze, then sat down beside Bai Xurou and began eating.
Seeing the two beautiful women sitting across from her like a pair of sisters, Bai An'an finally smiled.
Yes, this was what family should feel like.
What do you think?
