Chapter 263 256 Go Home
Bai Zhongqi took the TMALST because he wanted to go home to see his parents.
As the esteemed Chancellor, the actual leader of the Star Alliance, Bai Zhongqi could have taken a ripple boat to the city where his parents lived, but he also wanted to take this opportunity to see for himself what state the United Empire had developed into after such a long time.
Cities like the Imperial Capital were already on the more aggressive side. In order to meet the service needs of tens of millions of people at one go, the Imperial Capital built a new maglev transportation system in just a month, all public buses and trams were now running in the sky, and people who purchased air cars began commuting in midair.
Nearly all of the city's power poles and communication base stations had been dismantled. The Star Alliance's wireless ultra-long-range energy transmission system had already made large-scale electrical transmission easy. Essentially, any newly purchased electrical appliance, including cars and the like, could be charged without the need for wired connections, as they received directed wireless power within range.
Building after building, both old and new, began to be fitted with smart systems. AI intervention made everything from work to home life smarter and significantly more convenient for people.
Of course, there were still many places that bore obvious traces of the old era, but with the city developing so quickly, it might not be long before these vestiges of the old era disappeared.
By contrast, smaller cities didn't develop as quickly. Part of the Star Alliance's strategy involved a combination of de-urbanization and new urbanization. Especially for countries like the United Empire, endless urbanization was hugely destructive to the natural environment. The plan of the Star Alliance was to turn some cities into large metropolises to accommodate most of the urban service functions and then transform the surrounding cities into beautifully scenic, livable satellite cities. With the TMALST already deployed nationwide, transportation between cities had also become very convenient. Moreover, a large amount of land between cities could be used for re-cultivation of farmlands and reforestation of mountains, all of which were very beneficial to the environment.
The area where Bai Zhongqi's parents lived was designated as one of the residential cities. And the so-called development zones that had been set up around it had, under the impetus of large-scale construction equipment and material recycling devices, been reverted to barren land and replanted with temperate broadleaf forests.
The several million rural residents nearby had all been resettled. They received large houses in the city and new jobs, which allowed them to vacate their homesteads or farmland. Iridium Star's planetary transformation ships then massively reshaped the terrain and vegetation on the vacated land. Experience more on My Virtual Library Empire
Bai Zhongqi returned to the small city where he was born and raised. The progress of Iridium Star's technology here wasn't fast; even the construction of a maglev transportation system wasn't completed. The United Empire was too large a country to fully transform all its provinces and cities, which was a daunting task that required time. However, many local enterprises had accepted Iridium Star technology, had started to transform, and some had even successfully transitioned.
The Star Alliance's investment in industry and urban construction was not the largest. The two biggest directions were military and education. All industrial construction and urban development made way for education. Bai Zhongqi had long been crazily building Deep Sleep Learning System facilities and manufacturing a large number of bionic humans for education and training. The Star Alliance Congress even passed a law to increase teacher training recruitment by more than fivefold. Adult continuing education also became widespread, starting in communities and workplaces, as virtually everyone under sixty began to learn new knowledge and professional skills due to lifespan extensions from Genetic Advantage Liberation.
Bai Zhongqi came to his parents' home as unassumingly as possible. This was a new home that Bai Zhongqi had never visited before. Bai Zhongqi had given his father a sum of money after "scamming" the United States. Later, the family bought an independent house by the artificial lake in this small city.
It was just that Bai Zhongqi had played the role of a bad son. After that, he had led the charge in the United Empire's accession to the Star Alliance, leading the country into a transitional period of transformation. Then, he had rolled out the new lands of Emerald Sea Star and added Spratly Island, causing the nationwide real estate prices to plummet drastically. Due to multiple factors such as construction materials, building costs, and increased land supply, the price of his father's house had fallen by thirty percent shortly after purchase.
Since becoming the busy Iridium Star Chancellor, Bai Zhongqi had seldom had the chance to see his parents. Bai Zhongqi's parents even wrestled for a while with whether or not he was still their son. Both elders hoped that Bai Zhongqi could achieve great things, but they never imagined his achievements would be boundless.
Bai Zhongqi did not wear his Chancellor uniform but dressed in plain, everyday clothes. When he knocked on the door, his father was momentarily stunned upon opening it. However, the dog that they kept at home recognized him by his scent and rushed up to Bai Zhongqi, displaying overwhelming affection.
Bai Zhongqi laughed as he picked up the little dog, and his father let him into the house, asking, "When you said you were coming home to visit, I thought you were joking. I didn't expect you to actually come back."
"I haven't been back for a long time, so I thought I'd take this chance to rest."
His mother also saw Bai Zhongqi and came up with a reproachful tone, "How come you've gotten thinner?"
Bai Zhongqi spread his hands helplessly and said, "I was a bit overweight before, now I'm back to a normal physique, I'm quite fit now."
His mother still insisted, "You look better when you're a bit fatter."
His father asked, "Why didn't your girlfriend come with you? She's been traveling around with you."
"She's shy; we will come over after a while, no rush."
Bai Zhongqi's mother gave his arm a smack and continued complaining, "You two have been together for almost a year now, it's almost time to get married, isn't it? Even though you're no ordinary person now, you still should get married when it's time."
His father also chimed in, "I'm still waiting to hold my grandchild."
Then Dad, with a flight of fancy, asked, "If you really had a child, would they be some kind of crown prince? Look at you being the Chancellor, it's so dull, you can't even grant your old man the title of Emperor Emeritus."
Bai Zhongqi knew Dad was joking, and he laughed too, "Otherwise, we'll build a country for you on some planet in the future, and you can be the emperor there."
Dad chuckled heartily, "That would be great, we should choose a planet from the Primate Clan, and I'll assemble a harem of three thousand beauties."@@novelbin@@
No sooner had he finished than Mom smacked him on the back, "You old reprobate."
Mom quickly put together a meal that wasn't fancy, but homey and delicious. Bai Zhongqi had become quite fussy about food and drink. With very nice restaurants already in Tai Ping City on Spratly Island, and the chefs serving his Wuya Palace were of high caliber. Mom's cooking skills couldn't possibly compare with a professional chef's, but her dishes tasted like home.
Bai Zhongqi cradled his rice bowl and wolfed down the food, obviously enjoying himself immensely.
Dad grinned at his son, "You, my boy, haven't been swindling people, have you? Surely you're not acting as some global chancellor, but working as a laborer in Africa."
Bai Zhongqi laughed, "The work I'm doing is indeed no easy task."
At this point, Mom expressed her worries, "Son, are you really going to fight those aliens? In our current state, can we win?"
Bai Zhongqi could sense his mother's anxiety, and he reassured her, "I can't guarantee absolute certainty, but we have made ample preparations. Technologically speaking, Teizene lags behind us to a significant extent. With precise calculations and proper command, our odds of victory are very high."
Mom didn't understand all these things Bai Zhongqi was talking about. In her mind, war might still be reminiscent of the kind of conflict at Shangganling, but she was aware of the risks associated with war.
Grabbing her son's wrist, Mom carefully admonished him, "It would be best to win, but if we can't, don't push yourself too hard. Such things are preordained. If the situation turns bad, just take your ship and get away quickly. As long as those people can't catch up, that's all that matters."
Dad frowned and retorted, "Why would you say such a thing? Your son is doing something incredibly important, something that concerns the whole world. If there's a chance to win, we must try our hardest."
Mom insisted earnestly, "I'm speaking the absolute truth. If we can win, then all is well. But what if we really can't? As long as our son has the means to escape, he shouldn't stay and go down with the entire Earth. When the end comes, who can look after whom?"
She spoke with a deep sense of gravity to Bai Zhongqi, "Son, your father and I are old now, and not much use. If something happens, you don't need to worry about us; just make sure you and your girlfriend can get away safely."
At this point, Dad was merely eating his meal and no longer spoke.
Bai Zhongqi felt the weight of these words, and the food he was chewing suddenly lost its flavor. He had never really thought about what he would do if they actually lost the war.
He was immensely confident in himself, having gathered a lot of intelligence on the enemy and understanding the war potential of Iridium Star. He spared no effort in uniting Earth's forces and melding the strength of Iridium Star with Earth's. He believed this combined force was powerful enough to utterly disorient the Lizard People.
But nobody could predict what might happen in war. Bai Zhongqi couldn't; he was neither God nor Hei Si. If a mishap occurred and Earth's civilization was defeated, what would he do then?
Bai Zhongqi couldn't help but touch the key pendant around his neck, falling into silence.
"If a complete United Iridium Star Empire were here, there wouldn't even be space for Teizene's gang of lizards to cause trouble," Bai Zhongqi inwardly sighed.
Yet ever since he had activated the game save of this universe and loaded it into his bone brain, he could no longer open the old game save inside the key. He knew he was carrying a game save loaded with infinite secrets waiting to be uncovered, including the Sky-Piercing Pyramid of the Elder Race, which the key had already absorbed. Perhaps by accessing that, he could find a super weapon that could resolve the current crisis.
When Bai Zhongqi finished his last bite of food and prepared to get up, a piercing alarm suddenly blared in his brain.
What do you think?
