36 – FH
Even though I didn't specifically know my opponent's name from the last time I met him, since back then the game didn't even have the option for Players to choose names, I still recognized that striking appearance!
Straight black hair, bright green eyes, a striking black bandana on his forehead below his hair, the same black sweatshirt he wore the last time we played, and a confident smile.
This was my first opponent in Runestone, the Player who I believed was not just a Player, but actually the Game Creator of this game!
“Congratulations on reaching the Master Rank, Owen, you did it faster than I thought.” He said politely.
While I was shocked by his presence, the viewers in the chat were completely confused.
[Who is he?]
[Why is an Unranked Player playing against the only Master Player in the game?]
[Man, how unlucky must it be to play your first ranked match and fall against the best Player in the game?LMAO]
[Didn't anyone find it strange that this Player seems to know Owen?]
[Poor guy, he's going to lose so badly that he may never play Runestone again].
I didn't even pay attention to the chat messages and finally came back to reality. “Thanks, if it hadn't been for your tips when I first started playing, it would have taken me a lot longer to get the hang of the game.”
“Don't say that, I've followed your talent and dedication and I can tell you that even without my help you'd still be the first Master player in the game.” He laughed as he shook his head.
[This Player taught Owen how to play?]
[Who could teach the best Player in the world how to play?]
[How did Owen learn to play with a Player who only plays Normal Games?]
[I think they know each other outside the game].
Curious as to why he was here, I asked, “Did you come to play against me to see my skill level and congratulate me on reaching the Master Rank?”
Hearing that, he neither denied nor confirmed it. “I guess both, but I also have another reason. You see, I have some new cards to test and I thought it would be more interesting to test them against the best player in the game, no?”
“New cards?!” I asked excitedly, feeling my chest quicken.@@novelbin@@
“Yes, some cards that were found in the Runestone tavern. These cards haven't been tested in the game yet and I have to decide if they're ready to be packed into card packs so that Players can try and buy them.” He said as the game started and pulled out his starting cards.
As soon as he did, I realized that the skin design on the back of his cards was unlike any I'd ever seen in the game.
An ice blue back with a drawing of a wooden hut in the center of it.
The quality seemed normal, without any flashy visual effects, but what that drawing represented only confirmed my doubts.
This, coupled with his nickname being [FH], the obvious abbreviation for something we had to see every time the game opened, further confirmed for me that he was the creator of this game!
Now the viewers in the chat also started to notice something strange.
[Hey, what's with the skin on his cards?]
[I've never seen a player wearing that...]
[A log cabin in a blizzard... doesn't that look like the FrostHaven Entertainment logo?!]
[Yoo, and this Player's nickname looks like an abbreviation for FrostHaven...]
[Couple that with the fact that Owen said this dude taught him how to play the game, who could teach the best Runestone player other than the game's creator?]
[Broo, he said he's going to test new cards, aren't those the cards that are going to come in the next update of the game?!]
[Damn, I have to call my friends to see this!]
[Shit, my friends are in a dungeon right now, they're going to die of rage when they find out they've missed something like this!]
[Owen, for fuck's sake, don't delete the VOD from this stream, I need to be able to watch it again later!]
As the Players realized this, they started inviting friends over while FH and I chatted, causing the number of viewers to rise rapidly every few seconds.
800 viewers... 850 viewers... 900 viewers... 950 viewers... 1,050 viewers...
Looking at my cards, I quickly made my choice and played a simple 'Little Arcane Golem', one of the most common basic cards in Wizard decks, and ended my turn.
When FH played his card, I was already surprised to see a completely new card with mechanics I've never seen in the game!
[Name:Devoted Guardian
Type: Creature
Mana Cost: 2
Attack/Defense: 1/4
Ability:Blessed by Light - Whenever this card is healed, deal 1 damage to a random enemy.
Flavor Description:
“It not only protects, but turns every blessing into divine retribution.”]
This card... I'm sure this card doesn't exist in Runestone yet!
What makes me more certain of this is that I've never seen any card or spell that allowed the Player to heal a card or heal himself!
Curious, I looked at his profile and saw that instead of showing an image of the Magician Lyna or the Warrior Shogar, his profile only had a “?”, without showing anyone's image.
Trying to see the name of that hero, the only thing that came up was “???”.
Curious, I asked, “Which hero are you using?”
Hearing my question, he looked up from the cards in his hand and smiled at me. “I'm not using Lyna or Shogar.”
I rolled my eyes when I heard this, since I had already realized it, but the viewers in the chat were shocked by this revelation.
[Wow, he really is FrostHaven!]
[Broo, is he testing one of the new heroes in the game?!]
[I think it's a new hero, as he must not have decided on the hero's appearance yet this still appears as a “?”]
[Is there any way we can also test this new hero?!]
“Is this hero you're using one of the two heroes mentioned in Whisper's post?” I asked curiously, trying to understand this better.
To my question, he just nodded, without saying anything else.
Out of curiosity I looked at his skill to see if I could find any more information, and to my surprise his skill really was different from the two current skills in the game!
[Hero Skill: Restorative Healing
Mana Cost: 2
Description: Heal 2 life points from any target.
Flavor Description:
“In the light of compassion, even the wounded can raise their weapons.”]
This description of the skill shocked me even more.
“This healing skill is the complete opposite of Lyna's skill?!” I said in surprise, drawing the viewers' attention to it as well.
FrostHaven just smirked in front of me but didn't say anything about my comment.
[Bruh, I thought it would be impossible for Runestone to add a Healer class, but with a skill like that, what other class could use it besides a Helaer?!]
[Me too!]
[I thought that if Runestone were to add a Healer it would be useless, but with a skill like that, as long as you got enough defense you would be immortal in the game!]
[Being a Healer I have to admit, I'm very envious of the Healers in California for being able to play Runestone... when is this game going to be released nationally?!!]
[I never thought I'd think a Healer skill was OP...]
[Guys, the card FH used deals damage to a random enemy whenever it's healed, so if the Healer has cards that synergize well enough with healing, it's possible he could win the game just by healing!LOL]
Seeing these new cards, new skills and thinking about the new possibilities of combos I could make or face made me very excited.
My mind quickly started thinking about which cards would be the best to deal with Healers and before I knew it, the game was flying by.
During the rounds, FH was using both old cards and some new cards that I had never seen before.
Even though I don't have all the cards, I believe I've seen all the cards in the game being played by my opponents, so I'm sure these new cards that FH is using are all new cards that will be coming next season.
Not only were the cards exclusive to Healers, but there were also cards that would synergize very well with my Mage Deck, or even cards that would be very useful to use against a Warrior Deck!
At the end of the game I just looked at the field and realized that despite being the best Player among the regular Players, my knowledge and experience of Runestone still didn't compare with the creator of the game.
Even more so when he had cards at his disposal that I didn't even know about.
But it was a very fun game.
Surprisingly, or perhaps not so surprisingly, even though I lost the game, when the game ended I didn't lose any RP, but gained +1, leaving me with a total of 2 Ranked Points!
Turning my attention to the stream now that FH was no longer here, I realized that my viewer count had risen from 800 people initially to 2,780 people!
The chat was completely crazy with players playing Runestone excited about what they had just seen, players who wanted to play Runestone but couldn't because they lived in another state, and ordinary people excited and envious wanting to play the game too.
Since there was nothing I could do to appease them and I didn't want to miss the opportunity to win over this new audience, I started explaining to them how it was the first time I played against FrostHaven, when I didn't even know he was the creator of the game.
A few hundred people left the live stream as soon as the game was over, but many still stayed to hear my story.
While I was talking to the audience on the stream, clips of what had just happened began to spread across the internet, gaining a lot of attention for the game and for the next update that was to come.
And not to miss out on the hype, a new post appeared on FrostHaven Entertainment's Whipser.
