Chapter 666 Mana Contract
After hammering out the details of the main event of the masquerade ball, the Duskfall couple, Adam and Qamara exited the room together.
The two parties involved had signed a mana contract which stated that they would work together to deal with the people from the Cult. Moreover, both parties were forbidden to harm or kill one another.
Qamara was highly reluctant to sign the contract, but Adam somehow managed to convince her. They had much bigger problems to deal with than the Duskfall couple, after all.
"Please wait there, my friend," Altan spoke in his usual enthusiastic smile as he pointed at his grand study room on the second floor.
He then came forward and spoke in a hushed voice, "Fern and I will go get the other guests who'll be joining us for the ritual."
Adam deeply looked at the man and nodded. He was not afraid of the couple abandoning them now. After all, that would alert the enemies from the Cult of Bones.
"Alright, love, let us go get our friends." Altan gently held onto his wife's hand and walked to the other end of the hallway, stopping by in each private lounge, and personally inviting the VIPs.
Adam and Qamara pushed open the door to the study and walked in. Once inside, they stood in a corner of the room, patiently waiting for the others to arrive.
Qamara couldn't stop herself from fidgeting continuously. It was evident that she was highly nervous. Seeing this, Adam held her hand and gently squeezed it.
He cast Mind Whisper and assured her, 'Don't be afraid. I have everything under control.'
Qamara looked at him and, for a moment, felt as if everything was right in the world. When she stood right next to him, she felt as if it was the safest place in the city.
But when she realized that she knew almost nothing about her enemies, not even their numbers, she couldn't help but voice out her concern, 'Who knows how many enemies we have to deal with? Wouldn't it have been wise to bring reinforcements?'
'Too late for that,' Adam joked.
But seeing that he hadn't managed to alleviate Qamara's concerns, he explained, 'If we got help from outside, it would alert the Rank 3 Magus from the cult. At that point, he would be forced to take matters into his own hands. As long as it's Rank 2 Magi, no matter how many of them, I'm confident in taking them head on.'
Seeing the confidence in Adam's eyes, Qamara felt slightly at ease. But she couldn't help but ask, 'But what if this Magus Olin Barrett really does make a move? In the face of a Mana Vortex Magus, we'll be utterly helpless.' Read latest chapters on My Virtual Library Empire
Adam assured her, 'Don't worry, he won't. These powerful Magi find it beneath themselves to deal with people weaker than them.'
'But…' Qamara protested.
'Qamara,' Adam interrupted her with a smile. 'Trust me. I have everything planned out.'
Right at that moment, guests started to enter the study. Most of them were heavily intoxicated, which didn't come as a surprise considering all the sins they were indulging in in the private lounges.
As people started to enter the study one by one, they all greeted Adam and Qamara who were already inside. They all remembered Adam being the guest of honor, after all.
Then, they separated into smaller groups and started conversing with each other. Most had excited looks on their faces, while others seemed a little nervous.
From the bits and pieces of conversations that she picked up on, Qamara mentally transmitted to Adam, 'The vast majority of the people here are wealthy merchants. Only a select few are part of the aristocratic circles of Ravenfell—all of them Barons, of course.'
'How come there are no nobles of higher standing?' Adam asked curiously.
'They won't bother themselves with the parties thrown by a mere Viscount no matter how famous said parties are,' Qamara answered truthfully.
'Yet, here you are. The eldest daughter of the Duke,' Adam joked.
'You still have the leisure to jest in such times?' Qamara felt quite helpless.
She couldn't understand where his sense of confidence stemmed from. Considering that they were about to face off against several Mana Liquefaction Magi, she felt that, at the very least, Adam should show some signs of nervousness.
Yet, here he was completely calm and collected.
Qamara couldn't deny that his composed state of being had an effect on her and she, too, began feeling less and less jittery about the things to come.
Finally, the Duskfall couple entered the study and closed the door behind them. He looked at everyone inside the room, his gaze lingering for slightly longer on Adam and Qamara, and proclaimed enthusiastically, "Ladies and gentlemen, it is time!"
At once, the small group of people consisting of a little more than a dozen people, erupted in exclaimations. Their eyes shone with excitement and greed at the announcement.
Adam coldly glanced at all the people in the room, thinking to himself, Heinous bastards, I'll make sure you all die a cruel death.
Altan stepped forward with a wide grin and made his way through the crowd. He stood right before Adam and laughed boisterously, "My dear friend, Adam. The time has come! Are you ready?"
Adam smiled, "After you, my friend."
Altan and Fern then walked toward the large fireplace by the wall. They glanced at each other and nodded. Then they pressed specific marble bricks on the mantle of the fireplace, followed by weaving a series of complex hand seals.
RUMBLE!
The hearth of the fireplace started to thrum at a slow yet steady pace as dust started to fall from the chimney. Before long, the hearth shifted sideways, revealing a secret passageway containing a staircase that led further underground.
"Everyone, follow me," said Altan as he and his wife were the first to descend the stairway. "Watch your heads."
Adam and Qamara followed right behind them. Then, all the other guests entered one by one. When the study was completely empty, a black-robed figure entered from the hallway.
He walked toward the fireplace as he weaved another complex set of hand seals. A few moments later, the secret passageway was covered by the hearth of the fireplace and everything returned to normal.
After the secret passageway was sealed, the robed figure left the study, ensuring that none who entered would ever emerge again.
What do you think?
