Looking at the lifeless eyes of the dozens of young women, Qamara was filled with rage. She looked at Adam and spoke through Mind Whisper, 'We must save them!'
However, Adam's attention was not on her. Instead, he was scanning the entirety of the chamber, as well as the last of the Rank 2 Magi that had entered from the passageway from the other side of the chamber. His face was growing solemn by the second.
'Adam!!' Qamara called out to him, her face riddled with urgency.
'Huh?' The raven-haired youth snapped out of his thoughts and looked at her. 'What is it?'
Qamara looked deeply at him and then pointed at the women dressed in red who were making their way to the bloody pond at the center of the chamber.
'We must do something,' she said. 'If we don't intervene, they'll be walking to their own deaths!'
Adam glanced at the women on the other side of the ritual formation. Seeing their expressionless faces and the way they were walking, he confirmed that they were given high dosages of drugs to get to that state. He doubted if they were even alive.
He closed his eyes and slowly shook his head. 'We can't,' he mentally transmitted.
'What?!' Qamara's eyes widened in shock. 'What do you mean we can't?! Are you being serious? Wasn't our whole plan to save the women who were unjustly imprisoned here?'
Adam looked at her and flatly stated, 'If we intervene now, the whole plan will be ruined. We might even die in the process. At that point, we won't even be able to save the rest of the women who are still imprisoned in the Duskfall Estate.'
Qamara looked on with disbelief. For a moment, she couldn't even recognize the person standing before her. 'You… How can you be so cold?'
Adam spoke with the same deadpan expression, 'Qamara, we cannot save everyone. I would rather sacrifice a few dozen to save a few hundred than the other way around. I'm just being pragmatic and trying to do the best given the situation.'
'Pragmatic?' Qamara involuntarily took a step away from him. 'Do the lives of those innocent women mean nothing to you? How can you talk so lightly of them?'
This damned woman…. Adam thought to himself in distress. He could see in her eyes the intent to save those women at the moment.
However, he couldn't let her do that. He couldn't let her foil the plan!
'We are surrounded by enemies on all sides,' he mentally transmitted to her. 'According to my estimates, there are fourteen Rank 2 Magi in this chamber, waiting for the right moment to attack!'
'What's more, this whole ritual being conducted by Altan is an extremely diabolical one. Believe it or not, the ritual is connected to evil entities far beyond your imagination. If you interfere now, not only will you not be able to save those women, you will also die in the process.'
'Think about what would happen to your parents when they hear of your death. Think about what would happen to Little Estar when she learns that you died. Think, Qamara, think!'
He paused for a moment before sternly adding, 'Think before you act!'
Qamara found herself rooted on the spot, not being able to come up with a counterargument. She only kept thinking about her parents, her aunt, and her little sister.
Seeing this Adam scoffed inwardly, thinking to himself, It's nice to act all high and righteous, but when one realizes what they truly have to lose, selfishness grips their hearts. Such is the nature of man.
Now that he'd dealt with the elf, he turned his attention toward the front. He could hear the gasps of some of the guests as they saw the young women climbing the stairs and walking straight into the pool until they were completely submerged.
After all the women had walked into the bloody pool, all that remained were the bubbles emerging on the surface. None of these women even bothered to swim back up to breathe.
It was as if they had completely given up on living and had offered themselves as sacrifices.
Once all the offerings had entered the bloody pool, Altan raised his hands towards the ceiling and spoke in a zealous tone,
"By the veil of midnight and the fire from the depths,
I call upon thee, Malzar, Lady of the Crimson Veil.
From the depths were damned souls wail,
Gaze upon us, your faithful, and drink deep our offerings!"
The pentagram around the pool glowed with a brilliant and sinister light. A moment later, the blood inside the pool started to bubble up from intense heat and steam rose from the surface.
Seeing that the ritual had begun, Altan continued in a solemn tone as all the guests behind him watched with bated breaths.
"Blood upon stone, flesh upon shadow,
A life unbound, a soul surrendered.
With this sacrifice, let the pact be sealed,
Let the years unravel, let the vessel be renewed.
By infernal decree, by covenant sworn,
Grant us the gifts of youth and power,
And claim what is thine!"
As soon as the incantations were spoken, the ground started to rumble. A terrifying infernal energy descended upon the chamber, causing everyone's skin to be covered in goosebumps.
The ritual formation lit up even brighter and then…
BOOM!!
A large crimson portal started to form right above the bloody pool!
When Adam gazed at the sinister portal, he felt the hair on the back of his next stand on end. These damned bastards! They're going to burn the city to the ground at this rate!
But a few moments later, after having scutinied the portal through his Sphere of Resonance, he breathed a sigh of relief.
Thankfully, nothing can pass in and out of this portal, he thought to himself. Looks like the strength of this portal can only allow it to take in the sacrifice and to offer boons.
After the portal had fully formed and stabilized, Altan uttered the final incantation.
"Malazar, Lady of the Crimson Veil,
Accept the blood of the virgin and mark thy chosen!"
What do you think?
