Chapter 669 Devil's Currency
Qamara was frozen on the spot when she saw the crimson portal being formed. A terrifying otherworldly energy flowed threw it, causing her to be filled with apprehension.
After Altan had completed the incantations, she witnessed the blood in the pool rise up slowly, forming a thick swirling pillar that levitated towards the crimson portal.
The portal hummed like a heartbeat as it greedily sucked the blood of the women. But the bizarre thing was, no matter how much blood was taken from the pool, its surface didn't seem to deplete one bit.
That could only mean two things - either there was limitless blood inside the pool, or something truly bizarre was taking place. Both reasons caused Qamara's heart to be gripped by fear.
She looked at Adam beside her and asked nervously through Mind Whipser, 'What are you planning on doing? This… this whole thing is very ominous, Adam! What do we do?!'
'Patience,' Adam replied with only one word.
Qamara couldn't help but grit her teeth in response. Yet, there was nothing else she could do. She didn't even know what she was dealing with. All she could do at the moment was to count on Adam and hope that he truly had a plan like he said he did.
In front of the blood pool, Altan suddenly conjured a strange-looking goblet that seemed to be made up of bones. He held it with both hands and stretched them forward.
"Lady of the Crimson Veil, please bless us!"
The crimson portal hummed in response. A moment later, a small blob of bright red liquid that contained specks of starlight in it descended from the portal and gently filled the goblet.
Gazing at the liquid that emanated boundless vitality, Altan's lips curled up into a faint smile. He turned around and walked towards his guests.
He stood before a middle-aged woman and offered her the goblet with an encouraging smile. "This is your first time, isn't it, friend? Therefore, you should receive the boon first."
"…Yes!" The middle-aged woman reached out for the goblet with trembling hands.
"One sip. That's all it will take," Altan instructed patiently.
The lady nodded as she gazed at the crimson liquid inside the goblet with a look of yearning. Then, without hesitating any further, she brought the goblet closer to her lips and took one large sip.
Nothing happened for a few moments, but then all of a sudden great changes started to take place. At a speed that was visible to the naked eye, the woman's body was rejuvenated.
Her skin became flawless, her hair thick and vibrant, and her youth restored!
At once, the people who had visited the chamber for the first time erupted in exclamations. Before this, they had taken Altan's claims with a grain of salt. But seeing was believing.
Meanwhile, the middle-aged woman—who now no longer looked middle-aged—in question, looked at the changes in her body and spoke with a trembling voice, "O-Oh my!! It's just as you said, Lord Duskfall!"
Altan burst into laughter, "It's great to feel great, doesn't it?"
At the back of the group, Qamara watched on in disbelief as she saw the changes in the woman. "How… can this be possible?"
Meanwhile, Adam coldly stared at the crimson portal that was still continuing to absorb the blood from the pool. Then, he glanced at the woman who had just drunk from the goblet and sneered.
Youth restored at the cost of your soul slowly blackening, he thought. This does nothing but ensure damnation upon death!
Wait a minute…
His eyes narrowed as he realized something. If those women were sacrificed just now… then where are their souls? By all means, their souls should have already been devoured by the lotus. Then why…
He suddenly thought of a possibility when he recalled the lifeless eyes of the women when they had walked into the chamber.
Could it be that their souls had already been extracted before they were brought here? But that doesn't make sense…
He racked his brains hard as his attention was drawn towards the crimson portal again, The devils of Hell will only offer you boons in exchange for souls, but for this ritual, it would appear that the devil only took the blood of the women.
Adam then glanced at the black-robed individuals from the Cult of Bones and wondered, These necromancers also deal with souls, but they wouldn't dare to not offer souls to the devil if they're dealing with them.
Suddenly his eyes lit up and he thought of something that was very likely to be true.
Could it be that the cultists offered the souls of these women to a different devil? A devil that is directly superior to this devil known as Malazar, Lady of the Crimson Veil?
The Nine Hells of Inferno was the home of the devils. It was a plane of sinfulness and organized cruelty. The devils were separated into a strict caste system and followed an extremely rigid chain of command.
It was only a guess, but Adam thought that it was very close to the truth. In that, Malazar only collected the blood of the sacrifices, leaving the souls to her direct superior.
After all, souls were the currency of the devil!
If my guess is right, which it most likely is, then that would mean the Cult of Bones is in contact with not one but several other devils, Adam thought to himself with a grave expression.
Meanwhile, Altan presented the goblet to an old man. Upon drinking from it, the man was filled with unnatural strength, endurance, and vitality.
After presenting the goblet to a few other guests, the contents inside were finished. However, Altan assured everyone, "Please do not worry, my friends. There is enough for everyone."
He paused for a moment before adding, "For our guests who have come here for the first time, I must remind you that the boons aren't permanent. Without repeated sacrifices, the gifts will fade. So you must participate in the ritual at least once in two months."
The guests were more than happy to oblige. If it were up to them, they would have held the ritual every week. However, it would be very difficult to gather so many sacrifices in such a short amount of time without raising suspicion.
Altan turned around and walked toward the blood pool again. The crimson portal was still absorbing the thick pillar of blood, meaning the ritual was still in progress.
He stretched his hands forward and spoke again, "Lady of the Crimson Veil, please bless us!"
The goblet magically floated from Altan's hand and levitated toward the portal. Soon, another blob of red liquid filled with starlight emerged from the portal and flew toward the goblet.
When Adam saw this, his eyes flashed with a ruthless glint and he scramed inwardly. NOW! Experience new stories on My Virtual Library Empire
