Chapter 172: Great Thinking Spot
Earth Two, Metro City.
The cold wind howled around them, carrying the scent of rain and rusted steel as Scott and Lady Fortress sat atop the massive statue of Super Scott. The entire city stretched below them like a forgotten wasteland as its flickering lights barely held against the swallowing darkness.
From this height, it looked like nothing more than a speck of dust beneath their boots.
Lady Fortress sat stiffly, still recovering from that punch.
She'd tanked the collision of two planets, survived the full force of a collapsing dwarf star, but this… this was different. The pain had lasted longer than ten seconds—hell, it was still there. But she wasn't about to show it.
Not with "Nightwatch" sitting right next to her.
So, forcing herself to act casual, she cleared her throat and muttered awkwardly—
"Uhm… this is a cool thinking spot…"
Scott, who was rummaging through a steel box on his lap, barely spared her a glance.
"Well, yeah, I guess…"
He muttered in a completely indifferent tone.
Then, after a pause, he added dryly—
"Maybe if it didn't look like some kind of post-apocalyptic nightmare where I was a complete monster who murdered people without remorse and then forced them to build a statue in my honor to praise my tyrannical rule… sure. Great thinking spot."
His voice was empty, flat—like he wasn't even trying to be sarcastic.
There was no smile, no amusement. Just exhaustion.
His eyes were dull, weighed down by a fatigue so deep it looked like it had settled into his very bones.
It made sense. Scott hadn't had a single proper night of sleep since he was warped here. Not even a nap. At this point, he was minutes away from collapsing.
"Hm?"
Lady Fortress noticed.
And for some reason, it bothered her.
Her fingers twitched, and before she even realized what she was doing, her hand moved—reaching for him. Just a simple gesture, an instinctive reaction to… to what, exactly? Pity? Concern? Something else?
But at the last second, she hesitated.
Her fingers curled back, and she awkwardly played it off by tucking a few strands of hair behind her ear.
"… Sorry," she muttered.
Scott didn't even look up.
"Yeah, yeah, it's fine…"
He said, still sifting through his steel box like he barely even registered her words.
Then, with the same tired monotone—
"Can you scooch a little closer?"
Lady Fortress froze.
Her brain short-circuited.
『He… he wants me to come closer?』
Her mind instantly betrayed her, dragging her into a spiraling abyss of unnecessary, very unnecessary, thoughts.
A few months ago, he had carried her naked body in his arms. And now this?
What's he planning?
Was he going to touch her?
Was it going to be inappropriate?
Would it be wrong if she… enjoyed it?
Her entire face exploded into a deep shade of red. Her mouth opened as if to scream, but the real screaming was happening inside her head. She slapped both hands over her face as she physically tried to stop her own thoughts from spiraling any further.
Scott blinked, completely lost.
"… You good?"
He asked, giving her a once-over.
"How hard did you get hit?"
That snapped her back to reality.
She peeked at him through her fingers.
"Huh? What do you mean?"
Scott sighed, finally pulling out a small spray can and a ball of cotton.
"Your face… I have a pain relief spray, cotton ball and some bandages. Your wounds aren't healing, so yunno… I figured this might help."
He held them up for her to see.
Lady Fortress stared at the items in his hands.
And just like that, all her previous thoughts were eradicated.
The redness drained from her face, replaced by a completely deadpan expression.
She had overthought again.
To think that this was the man who had seen her naked body and would have to take responsibility for witnessing her in such a pure state… Sure, she hadn't exactly told him or given him signs, but still—he was at least supposed to know!
But then… as she thought about it more, her irritation softened into something quieter.
Then again…
With the way this world looked, her naked body was probably the last thing on his mind. He was sitting here, staring down at a city where he was a hero in one world and a monster in another. And it wasn't like she had told him what his other self had been doing here…
Her arms folded across her chest, and she exhaled heavily.
Still, it was kind of a bummer.
Here she was, getting a rare, strangely romantic moment with him, and yet all she could think about was how the media back home had lied.
Nightwatch was no monster. She always knew that.
And to top it all off…
『Damn, he's actually really handsome.』
It still caught her off guard sometimes.
She never expected the man behind Nightwatch's mask to be so handsome—or to be a celebrity, no less. At first, she hadn't recognized him. As a delegate, she was more familiar with politicians than with the famous faces that made teenagers lose their minds.
But she knew Scott was well-known… some kind of celebrity, at least.
She'd seen Pulsar looking at pictures of him last week.
Probably doing research, yeah?
She shrugged absentmindedly.
Scott, who had no idea what she was thinking, just saw the shrug and sighed.
"… So is that a yes?"
Without another word, Lady Fortress scooted closer.
Closer. Too close.
Until her shoulder was pressing against his.
And immediately, her face burned again.
She ducked her head, pressing both hands against her thighs like a nervous cat.
Scott blinked at her.
"… You ready?"
Lady Fortress lifted her head sharply as her face suddenly turned serious—like a soldier preparing for war. She gave him two very firm nods.
It was so ridiculously cute that Scott almost smiled.
Almost.
He uncapped the spray and leaned in.
For some reason, Lady Fortress tilted her face slightly — almost like she was waiting for a kiss.
Scott actually chuckled at that.
And then—
PSSSSSSHHHH!
The cold pain relief spray hit her bruised skin, and she immediately flinched.
"Ouch!"
It was such a tiny, squeaky sound. Like a rat feeling pain for the first time.
Scott paused. He looked at her.
Looked at the woman who could push an entire warship across the galaxy in seconds and shrug off direct hits from nuclear warheads.
And then he laughed.
It was small. Quiet. But it was there.
Lady Fortress peeked at him through one open eye — and smiled very softly.
『Yeah. That's enough for now.』
Minutes Later…
Scott finished applying the last bandage, then smoothed it over one of Lady Fortress' deeper cuts with careful precision.
With that done, he shut the steel box with a quiet clink, and in the next second, it vanished into a blue light, returning to the System's inventory. He gave her a small, satisfied nod before leaning back slightly.
"Okay, all done…"
He said as a faint smile touched his lips.
"You can open your eyes now."
Lady Fortress slowly peeled her eyes open and gently touched her face, feeling around the areas where the pain had once been sharp and biting. As her fingers traced over the freshly treated bruises, a soft smile grew on her lips.
"Ooo──!!"
She hummed, clearly pleased.
"I can barely feel most of the pain now. Who would've thought Earth's medical field was actually this advanced?"
Scott chuckled softly. The way she marveled at something as simple as first-aid supplies was almost endearing—like a child discovering ice cream for the first time.
『Then again… she probably knows what first-aids are and this is just a System-enhanced version… I hope?
He couldn't imagine one not knowing first-aid.
With that covered, he exhaled through his nose and let his gaze drop to the city below.
"Hmm…"
He muttered, tilting his head slightly.
"Actually… this is kind of a good thinking spot."
Lady Fortress arched a brow at him, surprised.
Scott sighed.
"Sorry about what I said earlier. It's just… hard to see anything as a good thing right now."
He gestured vaguely at the city.
"Most of my encounters here have been disasters, to say the least. Ugh, I hate it here…"
Lady Fortress didn't say anything—she just kept her eyes on him and watched his every expression and movement — even the subtlest ones. The way he spoke, the way his shoulders sagged slightly, the way his fingers absentmindedly tapped against his knee… she was paying close attention.
Scott noticed after a moment and perked up slightly, turning to face her.
"Huh? Is something wrong? You're uhm, looking at me kinda… weird."
Lady Fortress blinked rapidly as if she had only just realized what she was doing. Then, in a sudden flustered panic, she jolted back.
"Oh—uhhh—sorry!"
She blurted out.
"I was just looking at something on your face…"
Scott lifted a brow.
"Something on my face?"
He immediately lifted his hand and started rubbing his cheek, trying to wipe off whatever it was.
Lady Fortress's eyes twitched.
"Oh my—!"
She shifted even closer, eyes widening in disbelief.
Scott froze, hand still on his cheek. "Uh… what now?"
Lady Fortress let out a deep sigh, like a tired mother dealing with a hopeless child. Then, she lifted a single finger and wagged it at him, her expression as strict as a headmistress lecturing a misbehaving student.
"Honestly! Are all men this clueless?"
Scott blinked, utterly lost. He leaned back slightly as he retreated from her intense judgmental finger.
Lady Fortress huffed.
"If there was really something on your face, would you seriously just wipe it off with your hand? That's so unhygienic! You should have a handkerchief on you at all times—it's part of being a gentleman!"
Without another word, she reached into a small pocket hidden beneath her cape, pulled out a pristine white handkerchief, and held it out to him.
Scott stared at it.
He then stared at her.
"Huh?"
He muttered, confused.
"But I don't actually have anything on my fa—"
He stopped mid-sentence.
Her hand was shaking.
Her face, which had already been red, was growing even redder.
Scott softened. He smiled faintly, then reached out and took the handkerchief from her fingers. Without questioning it, he wiped his already clean face with it, playing along.
Once he was done, he held it back out to her.
"Here. Thanks. I really appreciate it."
Lady Fortress didn't even glance at him.
Arms folded, legs crossed elegantly, she looked straight ahead, face still burning.
"Keep it… I expect you to have it properly washed and returned to me tomo—"
She hesitated deeply. "Or just… whenever you want."
She shot him a small side-eye.
Then, a very soft, barely-there smile.
Scott blinked, slightly taken aback.
He never really paid attention to it before, but now that they were alone, now that he wasn't in the middle of some high-stakes battle or dangerous situation…
She was actually pretty cute.
Of course, he had noticed her beauty before, but it had been a passing thought in the heat of the moment. Now, in this quiet space, with the soft glow of the ruined city reflecting in her eyes, with her flustered expression and stubborn pride…
Yeah. It hit differently.
Meanwhile, Lady Fortress was desperately trying to maintain her composure. She tightened her arms around herself, forcing a blank, unreadable expression onto her face—one she had perfected over years of dealing with the public, politicians, and media.
She cleared her throat loudly.
"Well? Aren't you going to say something?"
Scott turned back to the city.
"You're really pretty."
He said, almost absentmindedly.
Lady Fortress trembled. Like, visibly.
Her body straightened, her posture went rigid, and it looked like she had just been electrocuted.
"Wh-, What kind of response is that?!"
She demanded, but her voice cracked slightly.
Completely unfazed, Scott simply said—
"Nothing. I just like giving compliments sometimes. Helps clear my head a little. Sorry if that was selfish."
Lady Fortress looked at him for a long moment.
Then, in a softer voice, she said──"It's fine."
A thoughtful silence settled between them.
Lady Fortress crossed her legs again, this time resting her chin on one hand like a scholar deep in contemplation.
『Hrmm… it's quite silent. Mother always told me to take my shot with any Terran man I find attractive… And well, this Nightwatch fellow did see me naked…』
Her mind wandered.
Cortian tradition dictated that if a man saw a woman in her pure state, he had to take responsibility. That was just the way things were. That was the way things had to be.
She took a deep breath. Slowly, almost hesitantly, she reached out, fingers inching toward Scott's hand.
She was just about to make contact when—
"Hey…" Scott suddenly said.
Lady Fortress immediately threw her hand away like it was on fire and sat up as straight as a soldier.
"S-, Sure! Anything!" she blurted out, a little too eager.
Scott blinked at her weirdly enthusiastic response. Then, as if he hadn't noticed, he simply asked—
"About Mael… that name. Can you tell me more?"
Lady Fortress's entire mental fantasy shattered into dust.
"… Eh?"
What do you think?
