Chapter 418 Story 418: The Labyrinth Below

The team's footsteps echoed faintly through the damp corridors as they emerged into a massive underground network. Water sloshed around their boots, the dim amber glow of old lamps casting distorted reflections across the rippling surface. The air was thick with humidity, carrying a pungent mix of decay and stagnant water.

"This place screams 'ambush,'" Shadow muttered, her voice low as her sniper rifle scanned the darkness.

Commander Rook raised a fist, signaling the team to halt. "Ghost, get a scan of the area," he ordered, his eyes narrowing as he studied the labyrinthine layout ahead.

Ghost activated her handheld scanner, its faint beeps echoing eerily. "The tunnels stretch out in multiple directions. Strong electromagnetic interference ahead—it's messing with the signal. We'll have to map this the old-fashioned way."

"Figures," Rook grunted. "Stay sharp. We're not alone down here."

The team pressed on, their movements cautious and calculated. The sound of dripping water was their only companion, until faint, guttural growls echoed from deep within the tunnels. The noise sent a shiver down Viper's spine.

"Bulwark, keep your heavy gear ready," she said, glancing over her shoulder.

"Always am," Bulwark replied, hefting his grenade launcher.

They followed the main waterway, the tunnel curving and narrowing in places, until they reached a fork. Rook knelt, inspecting the ground. There were tracks—deep, clawed imprints partially submerged in the murky water.

"Whatever made these, it's big," he said grimly.

Suddenly, a splash echoed from the left passage. Shadow swung her rifle toward the sound, her scope catching a flicker of movement—something humanoid but grotesque, its wet, grayish flesh reflecting the dim light.

"Contact, left flank!" she called out.

Before the team could react, the creature lunged from the shadows—a grotesque amalgamation of human and beast, its limbs unnaturally long and clawed. Rook fired his shotgun, the blast tearing through its torso and sending it crashing into the water.

The growls intensified as more figures emerged from the darkness, their twisted forms sloshing through the water. The team formed a defensive circle, unleashing a storm of gunfire. Find your next read at My Virtual Library Empire

"Fall back to the junction!" Rook shouted, firing another shell into an advancing creature.

As they retreated, the creatures grew bolder, their numbers seemingly endless. Bulwark lobbed a grenade into the horde, the explosion sending water and limbs flying.@@novelbin@@

"Ghost, find us an exit!" Rook barked.

Ghost scanned the area frantically. "There's a maintenance hatch two hundred meters ahead!"

"Move!" Rook ordered.

The team fought their way forward, the creatures relentless in their pursuit. They reached the hatch, a rusted metal door embedded in the tunnel wall.

Bulwark and Viper held the line as Ghost worked to open the hatch. With a creak, it swung open, revealing a ladder leading upward.

"Go, go, go!" Rook commanded.

One by one, the team climbed through, with Bulwark sealing the hatch behind them. The growls faded as they ascended, emerging into a quiet, derelict maintenance station.

"This isn't over," Rook said, his voice firm. "We need to figure out what those things are—and what they're guarding."

The team exchanged grim nods, their resolve unshaken despite the horrors they'd faced. The battle below had only deepened the mystery of what lay ahead.
