Chapter 417 Story 417: Descent into the Abyss
The shattered remains of the grand door revealed a spiral staircase, winding down into impenetrable darkness. The air was heavy and carried a metallic tang, hinting at what horrors lay ahead. The torches above flickered as if warning the team not to proceed, but Commander Rook didn't hesitate.
"Ghost, take point. Shadow, stay back and keep overwatch. Bulwark, stick close—we might need your firepower. Viper, guard the rear," Rook instructed. His voice was calm, but his grip on his shotgun tightened as the team began their descent.

Ghost led the way, her NVG illuminating the twisting staircase. Each step felt like a journey deeper into another world—a realm of suffocating silence broken only by the creak of old stone beneath their boots.
"Something doesn't feel right," Viper muttered, her voice hushed but laced with unease.
"Everything about this feels wrong," Shadow replied from the rear, her sniper rifle scanning their six. "Stay sharp."
Halfway down, the staircase opened into a cavernous chamber, the air shifting from cold stone to something warm and oppressive. Faint red lights pulsed from strange, organic-looking machines embedded into the walls, casting eerie shadows that danced like specters. Pools of thick, black liquid dotted the floor, emitting faint hisses and bubbling occasionally.
"Scanners are picking up faint movement—small and erratic," Ghost reported, her eyes fixed on the scanner on her wrist. "Could be drones, or…" She didn't finish her thought.
The silence shattered as a shriek echoed from the far side of the chamber. Out of the shadows emerged a swarm of biomechanical creatures—spindly, spider-like monstrosities, their metallic limbs clicking against the stone floor.
"Engage!" Rook barked, his shotgun roaring to life.
The team spread out, each member falling into their practiced roles. Shadow found high ground, picking off the spider-like creatures with surgical precision. Bulwark unleashed a barrage of heavy firepower, his grenade launcher turning swarms into smoldering piles of debris.
Viper's movements were a blur, her knives flashing as she weaved through the chaos, slicing through the creatures' fragile joints. One lunged at her, but she caught it midair and slammed it into the ground, its body cracking under her strength.
Ghost moved like a phantom, her suppressed rifle cutting down threats before they could even react. She darted between cover, tossing EMP grenades to disable the creatures' circuits.
As the battle raged, the chamber itself seemed to come alive. The red lights grew brighter, and the organic machines began to pulse faster, emitting a low, ominous hum.
"We're triggering something!" Rook yelled. "Bulwark, plant charges! We're not leaving this place intact!"
Bulwark nodded and began setting explosives around the room. The rest of the team provided cover, fighting off waves of the spider-like creatures.@@novelbin@@
With the charges set, Rook gave the command: "Fall back to the staircase! Ghost, blow it!"
The team retreated as Ghost detonated the charges. The explosion rocked the chamber, collapsing the strange machinery and sealing the path behind them.
"Mission's not over yet," Rook said, breathing heavily. "This was just the beginning."
The team exchanged grim looks, steeling themselves for what awaited deeper in the abyss.
