Chapter 490: Story 490: Scorched Shadows
The stifling heat above was replaced by suffocating tension in the underground control room. The fire had been an intentional trap, designed to funnel them into this chamber. Now, with steel doors locked and robotic sentries closing in, the team stood at the precipice of another ambush.
"Ghost, can you override the security?" Rook asked, his voice low but commanding.
Ghost shook his head, his fingers flying over the console. "Whoever built this system wasn't messing around. It's a fortress—layers of encryption. I can buy us some time, but—"
His words were cut off by a loud thud from the corridor they had entered. The first of the sentries emerged, its sleek, black frame reflecting the dim light. Its weapon systems glowed red, and the sound of charging plasma echoed in the enclosed space.
"Contact!" Shadow called, raising her rifle.
The room erupted into chaos. Shadow's sniper rounds tore through the first sentry's optical sensors, but two more appeared, their plasma shots scorching the air. Viper darted forward, her combat knives gleaming. She plunged them into the joints of one sentry, severing its limbs in a burst of sparks.
"Bulwark, give us cover!" Rook ordered.
Bulwark stepped forward, his heavy armor absorbing most of the plasma fire as he unleashed a barrage of bullets, shredding another sentry. The air was thick with smoke and the acrid scent of burning metal.
"Rook, we've got movement on the screens!" Ghost shouted, pointing to the monitors. More sentries were pouring into the corridor. At the same time, another screen displayed the glowing machine they had seen earlier. The figures around it were working frantically, their movements suggesting they were preparing for something catastrophic.
"They're accelerating whatever this operation is," Rook muttered. "We need to move. Ghost, keep working on that console. Everyone else, hold the line!"
As Ghost delved deeper into the system, the monitors flickered. Suddenly, a distorted voice crackled through the speakers.
"You shouldn't have come here," it said, cold and mechanical. "You will burn, just like the others."
"Yeah? We'll see about that," Rook growled.
A sudden realization hit Ghost. "Rook, I've found something—a ventilation shaft behind the console. It leads to the chamber with the machine. It's risky, but it's our only shot."
Rook nodded. "Viper, Shadow, you're with me. Bulwark, stay here and protect Ghost. If you can, keep those sentries busy."
Bulwark smirked, reloading his weapon. "You got it, boss."
The team moved swiftly, prying open the vent and crawling through the narrow passage. The heat intensified as they neared their destination. Emerging from the shaft, they found themselves on a high platform overlooking the circular chamber.
Below, the machine pulsed with a fiery glow, its energy feeding directly into the flames consuming the house above. The hooded figures turned, their faces still obscured, but their intentions clear—they were ready for the fight.
"Game on," Rook whispered, raising his weapon. The battle was far from over.
What do you think?
