Chapter 491: Story 491: Inferno’s Core
The oppressive heat in the circular chamber felt alive, an unrelenting force that pressed down on the team. Rook crouched behind the platform's railing, his eyes scanning the figures below as the fiery glow of the machine illuminated their ritualistic movements.
"Shadow, give me a count," Rook whispered, his tone calm despite the situation.
Shadow adjusted her scope, her rifle steady. "Five targets directly engaging the machine. Two sentries patrolling the perimeter. A dozen more armed guards covering their flanks."
"And the machine?" Viper asked, her voice sharp and urgent.
"It's not just a generator," Ghost's voice crackled over the comms from the control room. "It's siphoning energy from the fire above, using it to power something beneath the ground. If we don't stop it soon—"
"We'll stop it," Rook interrupted, cutting him off. "Viper, with me. Shadow, find a position and take out their snipers. Ghost, can you cause a distraction?"
"I'll trigger an overload in the sentries' power cores," Ghost replied. "Should give you a small window."
"Make it count," Rook ordered.
Below, the guards moved with mechanical precision, unaware of the chaos about to erupt. The sound of crackling fire masked the faint hum of the sentries' internal systems as Ghost worked his magic.
Then it happened. One of the sentries emitted a high-pitched whine before exploding in a brilliant flash, sending shrapnel and flames across the chamber.
"Go!" Rook commanded.
Shadow fired the first shot, her rifle's silencer barely audible as one of the guards crumpled to the ground. A second shot followed, eliminating another sniper before the rest of the group could react.
Rook and Viper descended the platform, their movements swift and deliberate. Viper darted between cover, her knives a blur of silver as she dispatched a guard with surgical precision. Rook fired his assault rifle in controlled bursts, keeping the enemies at bay as they pushed forward.
The remaining sentry turned its glowing red optics toward them, its plasma cannon charging. Before it could fire, Bulwark's booming laugh echoed through the comms. "Surprise, tin can!"
From the control room, Bulwark unleashed a torrent of heavy artillery, the rounds tearing through the sentry and the guards flanking it.
"Nice timing," Rook muttered, a rare grin crossing his face.
The machine began to pulse erratically, its glow intensifying. The hooded figures around it didn't flinch, their chanting growing louder.
"They're finishing the activation sequence!" Ghost shouted. "You need to stop them now!"
Rook vaulted over the last barrier, his rifle aimed at the nearest figure. A burst of gunfire silenced the chanting, but the remaining figures raised their hands, emitting arcs of searing energy toward the team.
"Viper, take them out!" Rook barked.
Viper lunged forward, her knives slicing through the air, meeting the attackers in a deadly dance of fire and steel.
Behind them, the machine roared, its core glowing brighter with every second.
"Ghost," Rook yelled, "how do we shut this thing down?"
"You don't," a chilling voice answered from the shadows. A new figure emerged, cloaked in fire and darkness, its presence overwhelming.
The true enemy had arrived.
What do you think?
