Chapter 492: Story 492: Inferno in the Shadows
The squad stood at the edge of the smoldering ruins, their eyes fixed on the roaring flames consuming the kitchen. Smoke coiled upward in dense, choking plumes, carrying with it the acrid stench of burnt wood and charred metal. Shadows danced erratically on the walls as the fire spread, devouring everything in its path.
Commander Rook tightened his grip on his weapon, his jaw set in determination. "This isn't just an accident," he muttered. "Someone set this place ablaze to send a message—or cover their tracks."
Ghost crouched near the doorframe, his NVG lenses flickering faintly as he scanned the smoke-filled room for movement. "No heat signatures yet," he whispered, his voice calm but tense. "But the fire's spreading too fast. This isn't natural."
"Chemical accelerants," Shadow observed, her sniper instincts sharp even in close quarters. She pointed to a shattered container near the stove, its remnants sizzling ominously in the flames. "Whoever did this wanted no evidence left behind."
Bulwark stepped forward, his reinforced boots crunching over shards of glass. "If there's a message, we need to find it before this whole place collapses. Rook, give the order."
Rook nodded, his mind racing. The fire was a trap, but leaving without answers wasn't an option. "Ghost, you're on recon. Find anything that looks out of place—documents, devices, anything. Shadow, cover him. Bulwark, see if you can stabilize the structure. Viper, you're with me. We'll check the basement."
The team moved with precision, their training kicking in despite the oppressive heat. Ghost slipped into the room, his movements eerily silent as he sifted through debris. Shadow followed, her rifle trained on the shadows flickering in the corners.
Downstairs, Rook and Viper descended into the darkness of the basement. The air was cooler but carried an unsettling stillness. Their flashlights cut through the gloom, revealing a hidden storage area lined with crates.
"Looks like someone's been stockpiling," Viper remarked, prying open a crate to reveal rows of high-grade explosives. "This isn't just arson—it's sabotage."
Rook's brow furrowed. "And they left it here for us to find. They're sending a message."
Upstairs, Ghost stumbled upon a charred notebook, its pages blackened but still partially intact. He flipped it open, his gloved fingers brushing over hastily scrawled notes. "Coordinates," he murmured, handing it to Shadow. "Looks like this fire was meant to stall us from heading to their next target."
As the flames roared louder, Bulwark's voice crackled through the comms. "Structural integrity's failing. We've got minutes before this place collapses."
"Move out!" Rook ordered, his voice cutting through the chaos.
The team regrouped outside, the notebook safely in their possession. As the inferno consumed the house behind them, Rook turned to his squad, his expression grim but resolute.
"They wanted us distracted," he said. "But now we've got their next move. Let's make sure it's their last."
The team nodded, their resolve unshaken. The battle wasn't over—and the enemy had just made their biggest mistake.
What do you think?
