Chapter 130 130: Guns and Kisses
The Imperial Court had recently discovered a curious thing—
their Sun was in a particularly good mood.
In the days that followed, though Leberli was repeatedly turned away, he waited outside the door with a good temper each time. If his cajoling failed, he didn't lose his temper as before but instead wandered off to see the six deer.
He couldn't quite remember who was who, as each fawn bore distinct patterns on their bodies. At that moment, gazing back at Leberli were pairs of eyes black as grapes, making him unexpectedly tender-hearted.
One was particularly easy to recognize because, unlike the other fawns, it was a reindeer. Its little nose was black, its fur brown, and its small ears and body gave it a clever appearance.
Leberli lifted it from the stroller and set it on the ground. The little deer toddled about on its four little hooves, walking steadily.
He nodded in satisfaction and said to a servant, "Normally, give them more training in physical ability. The three little females need not participate, but focus on this one specifically, and notify me whenever there's an issue."
The servant respectfully accepted the order.
Leberli then asked, "Does Suisui come often?"
The servant didn't dare lie and replied, "Miss Qiao does not come often but..."
"Speak freely," he encouraged.
"Yes. Miss Qiao does often visit the lion cubs."
Leberli's eyelid twitched.
He said nothing, his face showing no emotion. Before leaving, he instructed, "Keep the nine snake eggs far apart on normal days, and don't mention them in front of her."
The servant acknowledged this.
However, fate had other plans, as on that day, all nine snake eggs simultaneously developed cracks.
Initially one snake cub hatched, followed closely by the second and third, as if synchronized by some sort of telepathy, struggling out of their eggs.
The incubator suddenly became crowded; three snakes, each as thick as a finger, began to slither about, flicking their tiny tongues. By the time all nine eggs had hatched, the servant had already transferred each snake cub to a larger, constant temperature box.
One was a pure white snake with a pair of adorably bright red eyes. But before Xiao Bai could get used to this world, it was pinned down by a silver two-headed snake.
The silver two-headed snake, twice the size in thickness and length compared to its siblings, although toothless, opened its mouth wide and hissed at the other smaller snakes.
Qiao Suisui, who was playing with lion cubs when she received the news of the eggs hatching, visited out of curiosity about the two-headed snake. That glance sent a shiver through her scalp.
The incubator was crammed full of snakes coiling over one another. Although they were young and their patterns quite beautiful, Qiao Suisui's fear of cold-blooded animals made her unable to bear a second look.
She couldn't distinguish one from another, didn't even see the two-headed king cobra, and quickly turned and shuffled away.
Behind her, a few snake cubs sensed their mother's proximity and jostled each other in the box. The two-headed king cobra kept bumping its heads against the glass, attempting a 'jailbreak' to reach its mother.
Soon, someone reported Qiao Suisui's reaction to Leberli. The man, who was signing documents, frowned and barked, "Who took it upon themselves to tell her?"
His subordinate immediately bowed lower, sweating, thinking to himself that even if you don't care for the children of the other two 'consorts', you shouldn't prevent a mother from seeing her own child.
Everyone thought the Sun disliked Miss Qiao's children by the other two consorts, but that was not the case.
Leberli knew how much she feared snakes.
When she had just returned from Soter, Qiao Suisui always had nightmares. Sometimes she dreamed she was swallowed by a python, other times she fell into a snake cave.
He had stayed by her side, comforting her for nearly half a month until she gradually stopped having nightmares.
Back in the palace, Qiao Suisui clutched at her chest, her whole body trembling at the memory of that image.
She had intended to send photos of the snake cubs to Zong Fang, but in her panic, she had fled without taking any. Now too reluctant to return for the pictures, she ordered someone to take ID photos of each snake cub and label them accordingly.
By the time she received the photos, it was already near evening. Ruka had been leaving early and returning late these days, so she reluctantly used the Light Computer to call Carl.
The response on the other end was almost instantaneous, but after Qiao Suisui greeted, there was silence without reply.
Just as she was about to pick up the Light Computer to check if there was a problem, the first thing the man said was, "Who are you? You're not Qiao Suisui, give the Light Computer back to her."
"If you don't speak properly, I'm hanging up."
"No, no!" Carl said with a laugh, "You never initiate contact with me, I was a bit incredulous just now."
That left Qiao Suisui at a loss for words, and she said somewhat embarrassingly, "I need your help with something."
"Ha."
He damn well knew this woman wouldn't think of him unless she needed something.
"Speak, I owe you after all," he said, irritated.
Qiao Suisui coughed and said, "I want... you to help me deliver something to the Southern Battlefield."
"..."
When Carl heard 'Southern Battlefield,' he knew whom she was referring to, and his feelings were instantly complicated, both sour and bitter.
Suppressing his anger, he asked, "What is it?"
"Photos."
Delivering, delivering, why the hell send a few broken photos? I should send a missile instead.
That's what Carl thought internally, but he didn't say it aloud.
He jokingly spoke his heartfelt thoughts: "Sure, now in addition to being your private flying ship, I've also become your messenger. Whenever you feel like it, make me your man."
At his words, Qiao Suisui's heart skipped a beat, hearing his tone, she clearly sensed Carl's discontent. After thinking, she still explained, "I don't know any other way; the Southern Battlefield is signal-blocked. I heard that the only way for people there to contact the outside world is through encrypted communication bands. I... I really didn't know who else to ask for help."
Carl was silent for a few seconds, his usual unrestrained demeanor gone, his tone full of seriousness: "Sweetheart, you don't need to explain to me. I'm happy to be troubled by you. Really happy."
Qiao Suisui was caught off guard by Carl's sudden seriousness and stood there, not knowing what to say.
On the other end, there were only the sounds of their breathing. After a while, Carl gently said, "Close your eyes."
Qiao Suisui, not understanding why but still complying, slowly closed her eyes.
She couldn't remember how long it was, maybe a few heartbeats later or perhaps as long as an hour had passed, when Carl's voice echoed in her ears again, but this time inside the hall—
"Okay, now open them."
When she opened her eyes, standing two steps away was a man in a black special forces uniform with red short hair.
"Carl!"
Qiao Suisui exclaimed softly, seeing Carl smiling and walking directly towards her.
"I've come to collect a service fee."
"What servi..."
Before she could finish her question, Carl leaned in and kissed her.
He embraced her, while he still held a gun in front of him, the cold metal feeling touching her soft arm.
It was a hard, cold embrace.
Yet it was the most romantic, instantly melting kiss.
What do you think?
