Chapter 50 50 Carl
He saw Qiao Suisui come in, spat out the towel from his mouth, and gazed at her with a look of shock on her face, raising his eyebrows with a smile.
"Is the little boss here to bring me a quilt?"
Qiao Suisui didn't know how he managed to smile, just as she didn't know how this man, who had been severely wounded by a gunshot from the moment she entered, was able to jump and walk around as if nothing was wrong.
"You...you're okay?"
She had given her Medical Box in the storage compartment to the Pathfinders Team not long ago and now could only look for some makeshift replacement.
"Hold on, I'll go look for tools to help..."
"No need."
Carl stopped her, staring into her worried and tense eyes, with a mischievous smile.
"Come here."
Qiao Suisui thought he needed her help, since the wound was on his lower back and he couldn't reach it himself, so she went over as he commanded.
She hadn't expected that as soon as she approached, Carl would toss aside the tweezers, jab his fingers into the wound to pry and stir it open, then quickly and accurately plucked out a bullet.
'Clang—'
The blood-red bullet hit the floor, making a sound that was hard to ignore in the room.
Qiao Suisui turned pale at the sight before her.
"You....how could you...."
"Me, how could I?"
Carl mimicked her way of speaking and burst into laughter.
"Haven't seen it before? I thought you were a female from Sikoses; you must have seen at least this much. After all, this bit of a scrape is trivial compared to the injuries he's had, like a witch doctor in front of an Imperial Court Physician."
Qiao Suisui, smelling the blood in the air, felt her throat roll and a surge of stomach acid.
She couldn't even speak, covering her mouth as she ran to the toilet to retch uncontrollably.
Though it wasn't particularly bloody, watching Carl extracting the bullet, as if the finger was stirring into her own lower back, plus recalling Gai Meilun's exposed intestines from a few days ago, made her feel even more nauseated.
Carl wrapped up his wound carelessly and then went to check on Qiao Suisui. Standing at the bathroom door, he saw her leaning over the toilet, holding her pregnant belly, her petite face ashen, tears streaming from her eyes due to the physiological reaction, with rosy-red corners, looking so pitiful it made one want to bully her even more.
He clicked his tongue, seeing her like that, the initial desire to tease her morphing into an unexplainably irritable mood.
Carl didn't want to dwell on where this emotion came from, simply attributing it to the frailty of the female and his disdain for weakness.
Qiao Suisui, supporting herself with her palms on the floor, felt completely drained. She slowly got up to rinse her mouth, intending to return to her own room, only to see Carl, tall and broad, blocking the bathroom door, raising an eyebrow at her.
"Please move aside."
She really didn't want to argue with him. Perhaps because her delivery was imminent, she had been feeling quite tired lately, her belly growing heavy, and her appetite was not as good as before. She had asked the System, which had blocked all her pregnancy discomforts, but since she was carrying more this time, it recommended ensuring rest and maintaining a cheerful mood.
Carl, watching the pallor of her face fade, also put away his smile, a sudden displeasure welling up inside him, yet he stood his ground.
"What's the matter? If someone from Sikoses were injured, would you vomit like this too? I really pity him, putting in all that effort to win over a female who doesn't show a shred of consideration."
Qiao Suisui frowned, failing to understand why he was always picking on her. She looked up at him, her black, bright eyes now slightly moist, lacking any deterrent effect. The irritation in her eyes was fully conveyed, but unfortunately her eyes, both charming and innocent, turned up slightly at the corners. Looking at someone like that, she resembled an innocent little fox, itching the hearts of others.
Carl looked at her, the words he was about to say stuck in his throat. He swallowed, his Adam's apple bobbing, his expression showing a barely perceptible awkwardness.
"If you don't have anything else, step aside, I don't feel well and want to go back to my room."
Qiao Suisui was rarely so impolite to others, which showed that Carl really did irritate her somewhat.
Nonetheless, the latter seemed completely unaware; he did step aside, but like a tail, he followed behind her all the way to the stairwell.
"Do you always look at him like that?"
"What?"
"Just now, that expression you had, do you always look at Sikoses like that?"
Qiao Suisui didn't understand and thought he had a problem, so she ignored him and went straight upstairs.
Carl didn't get annoyed and stopped following her. He just quietly watched her back until she disappeared around the corner of the stairs. It was a good while before he turned and went back to his own room.
Qiao Suisui went to bed as soon as she got back and didn't wake up until Ruka came upstairs to check on her.
The warm hand gently rubbed her waist, and Ruka kissed her forehead, asking softly, "Are you not feeling well? Why did you go to sleep so early today?"
She thought about it but didn't tell Ruka about Carl teasing her. After all, he was the first guest, and if she told Ruka about it, his personality would undoubtedly lead to sending the guest away. She was not about to give back the money she had obtained.
"I just felt a bit tired, it's nothing."
Ruka picked her up and placed her on his lap, touched her head to make sure she didn't have a fever, and kissed the top of her head.
"How about we go for a check-up tomorrow? I'll accompany you."
"Has everything with the Royal Family been settled?"
He shook his head, "But I think there will be a result soon, there have been some changes lately."
Ruka briefly explained the situation at the Royal Family in the past few days. Gorba III had died, and it was confirmed that he was poisoned. With the emperor of the member country dying so mysteriously, the Federation, which had been watching, took the opportunity to intervene and unexpectedly chose to support Leberli.
"So Neo... "
Ruka said, "If I'm not mistaken, the poison was administered by Neo."
Qiao Suisui was startled but not too surprised. She had suspected the accusation that Leberli poisoned the Emperor because everything seemed too logical and the evidence too conclusive. From her understanding of Leberli, if he had indeed poisoned someone, he wouldn't have left behind any evidence.
"Neo is the Sun's first child, brought up with great expectations, but with Lanze's emergence, the original heir apparent was challenged, and he was actually never content with that. Originally, he planned to find an opportunity to get rid of Lanze, but Leberli's movements disrupted his plan, so he could only seize this chance by using Leberli's rebellion and his quelling of it to rightfully become the new Sun."
Following Ruka's line of thought, Qiao Suisui said, "But he overlooked a variable."
"Exactly, he didn't expect that Leberli would actually manage to get the support of the upper echelons of the Federation. To tell you the truth, that's something I didn't expect either." Even though Ruka knew that Leberli had always concealed his ambition, always acting as a carefree butterfly, he knew about Leberli's ability. Among all the members of the Royal Family, in terms of networking, skills, rhetoric, and perspective, Leberli was one of the best in his generation.
Hearing this, Qiao Suisui quietly breathed a sigh of relief. Deep down, she did not wish for any misfortune to befall Leberli.
"Suisui, I want to ask you a question," Ruka said, casting his eyes down after a long hesitation.
"What?"
"Your feelings for Leberli... How deep are they?"
What do you think?
