The following week, on our day off, I, Lushiel and Brother Vaide were walking through the forest together.
After that incident,Leticia and Lilysha somehow managed to escape BrotherVaide's clutches.
It seems he didn’t have the heart to disrupt the students' holiday any further than he already had.
Though, those two were still fired up about it.
But if they had actually been dragged along, it would’ve been way worse than dealing with those punks at the restaurant.
I’ve been on the receiving end of his antics before, so I know how it feels.
What’s been weighing on my mind lately is the upcoming mission.
We’re essentially being roped into assisting Brother Vade with his task.
---
“Alright, let’s eat. If you see any snakes around, catch them.”
“Got it.”
I pushed through the underbrush, found a snake, and skewered it with my magic sword.
We’re sourcing our food locally. After skinning and roasting the snake, it turns out to be surprisingly tasty.
A little while ago, Lucel would’ve made a huge fuss about this, but now she’s gotten used to it.
As the snake sizzled over the fire, Brother Vade finally filled us in on the details of the mission.
Apparently, there’s been an increase in “Summoned Possessed” within the country recently.
Summoned Possessed are people who have been taken over by demons or magical beasts summoned through demonic rituals.
Their official name is “Summon Masters,” but over the long course of history, they’ve been involved in all sorts of incidents.
Some are unable to control the demons they summon and end up being dominated by them, while others have their minds and bodies corrupted, spreading disease.
The term “Summoned Possessed” emerged from these situations.
The history behind this is so deep that even I haven’t been able to fully research it.@@novelbin@@
After all, even in the game, it wasn’t explored in great detail.
Some people become Summoned Possessed unintentionally or out of necessity, which has led to the term being treated almost like a slur.
The methods of summoning were supposed to have been lost over time, but according to Brother Vade, they’ve been on the rise again recently.
Our mission this time is to eliminate the source of this problem.
You’d think the royal family would be able to handle something like this, but apparently, they haven’t even noticed the issue.
Meanwhile, the Balefont family has managed to pinpoint the hideout of the mastermind behind it all. Impressive, really.
It seems Leorg is determined to make the royal family completely subservient.
In simple terms, he wants to pull off a “What? Such a problem exists in our country? As expected of the Valefont family!” kind of move.
-
“BrotherVaide , do we know what we’re up against?”
“More or less. But now’s not the time to discuss that.”
“Then why did you bring me and Lushiel along?”
“Does an older brother need a reason to take his younger siblings for a walk?”
A walk. That’s right. To BrotherVaide , most missions are just like taking a stroll.
The way he bites into the roasted snake makes him seem a bit violent, though.
“You could’ve just taken Gilium instead.”
“We’ve gone on walks together before.”
“Back then, you didn’t even give me the time of day.”
“I remember well when you completed a mission at just seven years old.”
Is he still holding a grudge over the fact that I became the youngest in Valefont history to complete a mission?
Brother Vade is a battle maniac, but he doesn’t like losing.
At his core, he’s someone who wants to master every technique and surpass everyone.
That’s probably the real purpose of this “walk.”
In that case, I’ll just hold back and not show my full hand.
Though, it depends on the opponent.
“How about you, Lushiel ? Have you been slacking off in your training?”
“Huh!? W-well, I’ve been doing okay, I guess…”
“How about I train you for the first time in a while? Maybe some shooting practice?”
“Ah—! I’ve been really into survival training lately!”
Yeah, right. You were complaining the whole time when we were holed up in the mountains.
Just as I was thinking that—
“They’re here.”
Brother Vaide stood up smoothly.
Without hesitation, he drew his greatsword and slashed horizontally. The trees around us began to crack and fall.
“Brother Vaide , you’re quick to act. I would’ve waited a bit longer to assess the situation.”
“When something catches my interest, I can’t help it.”
The distance was still far, so I would’ve waited, but Brother Vade seems eager to meet the enemy head-on.
The enemy is a robed, masked figure who looks like a mage.
“You’re more perceptive than I expected. I thought I had completely erased my magical presence.”
The man smirked fearlessly, showing no sign of being intimidated by Brother Vade.
He seems like a decently strong opponent, but Brother Vade was the one who flushed him out.
I don’t want to steal his prey, but I do want to fight.
“Brother Vaide , should I take care of him?”
“I’ll handle it.”
“Figures.”
There’s no way Brother Vaide would back down.
His eyes are shining like a child’s, and he’s already sheathed his greatsword.
Which means, once again—
“I thought some rats were sneaking around, but it’s just the three of you.”
“That doesn’t matter. If you’re going to attack, hurry up.”
“Tsk, tsk, no need to rush… I’ll take care of you now!”
Several magic circles appeared around the man, and beams of light shot out from them.
The beams moved left and right, forcing us to dodge like we were playing some kind of electric current game.
It’s like a spread laser magic.
“Hmph!”
“Oh? You can dodge this? But you can’t get close, can you?”
“This is…”
“Your mistake was not attacking the moment you detected me. I’ve crushed plenty of overconfident strong types like you.”
I kept dodging, but I couldn’t make a move.
Brother Vaide had already taken control of the situation.
“Composite magic! By focusing light and lightning into a single point, you’ve increased both speed and power! Normally, the trajectory would be unstable, but the magic circles are acting as pillars, allowing you to maintain control! You’re essentially wielding a sword of light and lightning! Enchanting magic is already a delicate technique, but to control multiple beams simultaneously, even if they move in straight lines, is impressive! No… this isn’t just ordinary magic enchantment! Normally, magic enchantment is applied to weapons, but you’ve enchanted the magic circles themselves! I see! This is fascinating!”
“…Huh?”
That’s BrotherVaide for you—eliciting that kind of reaction from the enemy.
Of course, this is just normal for him.
He doesn’t hold back at all, yet he’s quick to praise.
And the scary part is what comes next.
Brother Vade effortlessly closed the distance between himself and the man.
His speed surpassed the man’s magic.
“Tch!”
“But that’s not all!”
“Ugh! L-let go! My arm…!”
“Next time, try dispelling the magic circles! That way, you won’t be predictable and can launch a surprise attack!”
Brother Vade had completely subdued the man.
It was like watching a massive beast pin down its prey.
With overwhelming strength, he forced the man into a specific posture.
“Listen up. You probably construct the magical formulas for your magic circles as a preparatory step before casting, right? But that’s too slow. Try visualizing the magic without the circles first.”
“What the hell is this guy…? Even at maximum magical enhancement, he’s not budging…!”
Poor guy. He showed off some half-baked, flashy magic, and now he’s paying the price.
Once Brother Vaide gets like this, there’s no stopping him.
I thought about eating some more snake, but the mage had already wrecked it.
What do you think?
