The boy finally started to plead with me. “Mister! Please protect me! I’m just a little boy! I didn’t know what was going to happen when I accepted the next test!” Tears streaked down his face and it was hard not to laugh. For being so young, he was a great actor. He was a warlord who caused tens if not hundreds of thousands of deaths in the world and we hadn’t even been in the world for a year yet.@@novelbin@@
His survival would cause millions of deaths before the Justice League finally stepped in with a shadow ops team to get rid of him. By then the country most likely wouldn’t be able to function without a dictator and just killing him would leave a power vacuum that would result in millions more deaths before things settled down. Years if not decades of war in the region he took over.
I tossed my knife into the air before catching it as the boy huffed in desperation before his fake personality melted. “I see you must know who I really am. Well, I already have one person who offered to protect me and everyone else probably won't kill a child. Just stay away from me and I’ll make sure the people protecting me don’t kill you.”
The evil sneer he had led me to believe that was complete bullshit. The moment he could convince them to attack me he would. The countdown just kept going as he completely ignored me and started talking to the other person connected to his cell. I took a few jumps to get used to my previous body. Attempting something that I couldn’t physically do right now was the most likely thing that would kill me.
My back twitched in pain as I stretched. I’ll have to be careful not to do any explosive movements otherwise I might throw my back out and be a sitting duck. Other than that I knew I couldn’t sprint, my trick ankle and age made it so anything more than a slow jog would put me on the ground with a sprained ankle. The time finished counting down and I was leaning on the wall connected to the little boy as everyone else was looking forward I closed the distance and plunged my dagger into his throat.
The remaining six contestants looked at me in shock that I just ended the life of a little boy. I grabbed his weapon while wiping my knife on his clothes before speaking. “Oh, come on. He’s young so he isn’t evil? He’s probably killed more than all of us put together.” I put the second dagger in a downward grip as I prepared to be rushed at but everyone just kept looking at each other trying to figure out who they could team up with.
There were only two members on the good-aligned side and the others were villains while I was neither. The villains recognizing the situation slowly made their way towards each other except for Old Death. Old Death knew better and that might have saved his life. He knew his role as a killer was no longer necessary and had made his riches as a speedster in the universe. He just wanted to survive.
The two heroes somehow recognized each other. Both were part of the Justice League so they might have had a secret signal they could use or were close enough when the event happened to know they both accepted the trial. They separated leaving me close to Old Death, the three other villains on one side and the two heroes on the other.
We sat in that stalemate for about a minute before the whispering from the three villains ended. All three rushed at the two heroes at once. They would have won the fight if no one intervened. It’s a good thing that I did. The rules weren’t exactly explained and I didn’t need both my daggers to kill someone. While the three were solely focused on killing they weren’t expecting a dagger to be flung at one of their faces. No one did as it cleaved into his face and would have left a nasty scar if his life wasn’t snuffed out a moment later by another dagger wound to his neck.
I bounced back, the villains retreating as well not expecting the counterattack. The single female who was left questioned. “I thought you were evil. Why did you help us?” I almost reeled back from her black-and-white picture of morality. “Are you fucking stupid? I cured cancer and killed the literal devil. Would an evil person help you? It’s all perspective, I’m evil to my enemies and good to my allies.”
I had probably saved more lives than every single other member of the 100 put together then multiplied by ten. I probably had a higher body count than most of the villains as well, not the highest but if you only looked at the supers we’ve killed I was definitely the biggest killer. It wasn’t even a guess that I killed far more comic book characters than everyone else put together from the 100.
Another minute of talking before the villains tried to convince Old Death. “Hey, I recognize you old timer. You’re Old Death, aren’t you? Why aren’t you helping us?” He leaned against the invisible wall as he kept his body small in my direction. Seeing me throw a weapon and knowing I was the most deadly without powers he instinctively kept his guard up against me. He must have known I had been paying attention to him both times I killed and was expecting him to attack me.
“I’m fine with how things played out. If you two want to fight then go for it but leave me out of it. I’m… Happy with my life. I just wanted the extra bonus that surviving this trial will reward.” That’s it exactly too. Who knew if we were killing each other for no reason? I could kill everyone and expect to be rewarded but just be kicked back out with nothing to show for my effort. That’s why I’m not going homicidal maniac.
The timer kept counting down. The villains gulped as the little one tried convincing the bigger one to attack again. They waited until the last thirty seconds before they went again. This time the little villain went slightly slower than the big villain as they waited for my ambush. I wasn’t going to intervene now, I already killed who I wanted to and didn’t want to give Old Death a chance to ambush me in the last few seconds.
I had expected them to beat the two heroes but as the big guy finally went all in on the attack, his partner finally showed his villainous nature and betrayed him. Why would he do that? My best guess is he thought that the number of kills might affect the rewards given at the end. He wanted to get the easiest kill for himself with the least work and picked his partner who turned his back on him instead of the two people facing and pointing weapons at him.
The big man fell to the ground just as the event ended, I could only see the smile on the little villain's face as everyone vanished again. He gave me a smirk like he thought he won. If I was a hero he would have but I could give two shits about the dumbass as I was thinking in the long term. Depending if we got access to the choices of powers again. I knew in the long run letting him go would give me more chances at better rewards anyway.
I could always steal his powers and he might think up ones I didn’t as his reward. The same went for Old Death. If he chose to start killing again after we returned I wouldn’t just let Flash put him behind bars again. I’d fucking kill him while ripping all the fresh powers from his body.
