Vol. 1 - Chapter 2 - A Blessing in Disguise
When Jiang Ran opened his eyes again, he found himself in a gray and white mysterious space. There was nothing around him, and his body was floating as if weightless, unable to move.
…What a strange dream, Jiang Ran thought, and he closed his eyes to continue sleeping, but what happened next shook him out of his sleepiness.
…
"Mortal, now is not the time to sleep."
…
The sudden voice made Jiang Ran's body tremble uncontrollably. He immediately opened his eyes and looked in the direction of the voice. What he saw was a strange human-shaped luminous figure.
The human-shaped luminous being was also floating in the air, less than five meters away from him. Jiang Ran could see very clearly that the entity's face had the same appearance as a human's, but there were no physical features. There was just a pair of black holes where the eyes should have been. Hidden inside were two eyeballs like golden stones that stared eerily at Jiang Ran. It was pretty creepy.
If it were someone else, they might have a lot of questions to ask at this time, but Jiang Ran was different. After a moment of thinking, he said to the humanoid luminous being, "Mister God, as long as it can save me from death, I am willing to do anything."
The humanoid luminous being's movements paused for a moment. The words of this "dead-in-waiting" really surprised him.
In the past, when the "dead-in-waiting" woke up, they would basically ask questions like "Where is this place?", "Who are you?", or "What happened to me?". Then the humanoid luminous being would tirelessly give them a million-word tutorial for beginners about how he was the 'good god' and came to give these dying people who should not have died a second chance at life and such.
Even if there were knowledgeable guys, they would at least ask a few questions like "Was I hit by a truck?", "Am I going to be reincarnated into another world?", or "Can I choose the plug-in/cheat finger myself?".
This kid was quite unusual. Not only did he act as if he knew everything, but he also took the initiative to allow him, the 'good god', to make direct requests.
However, what the 'good god' cared about most was the gist of the boy's words. Thinking about it, one would notice that the boy's words sounded like a well-behaved and obedient statement of submission, but the subtext was actually "If there is no way to save me from death, then I will not obey you."
(Interesting, he dares to negotiate with me like this.)
The 'good god' felt that he might have drawn a good "dead-in-waiting" candidate this time, and he was in a good mood.
"It seems... you have indulged in a lot of online novels, eh?" The 'good god' asked.
"Occasionally."
"And mostly in the Wuxia/ Xianxia world, right?"
"Right."
"What about the AcFun?"
"I'm a regular."
Great. Now, the 'good god' could understand why this boy grasped the situation so quickly.
Knowing was one thing, however, most people, even if they had some degree of knowledge, would still be afraid. How could Jiang Ran remain calm after learning that he was dead? How could he talk to him, the 'good god', so efficiently, calmly, and neither humble nor arrogant? The 'good god' thought that this boy was far from being as simple as he looked.
"Very good, I'll make it short."
Strangely, the 'good god' did not ask any further questions and went straight to the point.
He told Jiang Ran that he died suddenly due to overwork, and hitting his head on the floor was also one of the causes of death. Given Jiang Ran's filial piety towards his parents, he was going to be sent to a 'certain parallel world'. As long as he completed the assigned task, the 'good god' would use his divine power to rewrite the result of his sudden death in the current world.
"During the mission, the time of your world will be suspended. As long as you complete the mission, your death will be as if it never happened. Okay, do you have any questions? If not, we will start the teleportation process."
While the humanoid luminous being was explaining, Jiang Ran kept staring at his golden eyes. By observing his expression, Jiang Ran made two inferences:
1. The humanoid luminous being was satisfied with him as the executor of the mission;
2. The humanoid luminous being couldn't wait to send him to perform the mission.
Based on these two inferences, Jiang Ran did not answer the humanoid luminous being's question. Instead, he said, "I have no questions, but I have a suggestion."
"...What suggestion?"
(This brat didn't even ask about the mission, but he even dared to make suggestions instead?)
The surprised 'good god' even wanted to activate the 'power of God' to see what this kid was thinking in his mind. Did he really have no emotions at all?
In the end, the boy said something shocking again.
"My suggestion is: invest all your resources in me, and I will definitely bring you profits beyond your expectations."
(Investment? Profits?)
The 'good god' was stunned for a second, and then...
"Ha...hahahaha...hahahaha!!"
The 'good god' couldn't stop laughing. This should be the most interesting "dead-in-waiting" he had encountered since he played the game with the evil god. It was really funny that a mere chess piece dared to ask for 'resources' from him. How could precious resources be used on a chess piece that would be discarded after defeat?
However, it was still interesting to understand the relationship between gods and chess pieces to this level, so let's just leave it like this...
"Okay, then I'll make an exception and give you a favor. Perform well."
The 'good god' pointed his finger, and a cherry-sized glass bead appeared in Jiang Ran's hand out of thin air. The words 'Universal Stone' were engraved on the glass bead.
"As for the content of the mission, since you didn't ask, you can see it yourself after the teleportation process is completed. Now, I'm going to send you to the parallel world."
After saying that, the 'good god' put his hands together and whispered something. Then, a translucent ball of light sealed Jiang Ran's body in it, and a parchment scroll fell into his hand. At the same time, a dark space-time tunnel leading to a certain parallel world appeared nearby. The only thing left to do was the final highlight— ability granting.
"Good luck, Jiang Ran, lad."
The 'good god' smiled and waved his fingers, and the light ball with Jiang Ran wrapped inside flew into the space-time tunnel. As it entered the space-time tunnel, the light ball began to spin rapidly, and various ability names like, "Mystic Eyes of Death Perception", "Ten Shadow Spells", "Death Return", "Scarlet King", "Vector Operation", "Great Sage" and other names flashed by quickly.
After a few seconds, the speed of the flashing ability names gradually slowed until it stopped. The ability that was finally given to Jiang Ran was called, "Pseudo-Super Dimension Eye". At the same time, as the price of obtaining the ability, the curse called "Thorns of the Heartless" was also attached to Jiang Ran's soul.
After the ability and curse were determined, the name of the parallel world to be visited was displayed on the space-time tunnel:
"Parallel World No. 37: Scarlet Star"
"Difficulty: Trial Level"
[Note: Heaven Level < Novice Level < General Level < Difficult Level < Veteran Level < Trial Level < Nightmare Level < Hell Level < Impossible Level. ]
The 'good god' was not surprised by this reasonable match until the light ball surrounding Jiang Ran suddenly lit up red.
"Warning! Abnormality detected– Warning! Abnormality detected--!"
The harsh alarm resounded throughout the space.
What do you think?
