Chapter 146 The First Clearing (4)
With the success of the first volley shot, four more followed suit, and all that remained in the end was a giant mess of green blood, corpses, shattered stone, shattered ice…and silence.
For a little bit, things had been touch and go for Aoni, as after the third round of Volley Shots, a group of "smarter" insects had tried hunting the source, causing him to stay on the move until eventually he dropped back down to the slide and went back to ice surfing.
From below, it was significantly easier to pick targets; as such, although he was zipping around and consistently trying to avoid using as much Energia as possible, he ended up completing several laps around the cavern, fixing any gaps caused by destruction in the ice bridge, and of course, hacking his way through any insect that got close enough to attack him.
By the time he finally came to a stop, the Lad felt woozy and could barely stand; however, he was the only living thing remaining; everything was dead, as was reflected in his Traveler's Display.
Progress Points: 3897.5
Sure, part of that astronomical number was to be attributed to Glacia and Nyria's efforts outside. Still, after over two hours and numerous underground explosions, every single insect had fallen by either Aoni's blade or a death spike from above.
"Fuck…ha…ha…damn it, that was dangerous," pulling out one of the nutrition bars in his inventory and some water, the Lad scarfed it all down in seconds before collapsing onto his ass on the ice bridge and attempting to get his bearings.
It was a brutal couple of hours, and the signs of battle were all over Aoni's tired and weary body.
Scratches, cuts, gaps in his clothing, and a mixture of blood/sweat covered him from top to bottom, cutting the image of a battle-hardened warrior, even if that wasn't the case.
In actuality, he'd maybe only hacked down 20 or 30, the bulk of which were merely 1-Star monsters; however, it was more than enough for Aoni to understand where he sat on the totem pole of power.
Looking at Austr, who sat against a fallen stalactite not far away, he replayed each battle he could remember, one after another, and each time, he found a mistake or several he'd made.
A foot too far forward here, a lack of reaction there, showing openings; when comparing it to the knowledge received from the Swordsmanship passives, it all became obvious, and Aoni knew just how much he lacked in practical experience.
It was proof of how sheltered a life he'd lived until now, scratch that, because even his first month here on Genovia was relatively peaceful thanks to the Newbie barrier.
"Still, it's kind of crazy that both of them increased with this battle, even after spending so much time training them over the past few months.

Dual Swordsmanship: G (►) *Formerly G-*
"WAIT! When the hell did I get an arrow beside Dual Swords…" widening his eyes and staring hard at the line of text, Aoni wracked his brain, thinking back to all the times he had seen the passive, only to notice that he couldn't pinpoint when it occurred.
| Recently |
"Look who's back again," rolling his eyes thanks to the captain-obvious remark, he Got to his feet, picked up Austr, and stored it in his inventory before speaking again.
"How recent is recent?"

"…"
"So you're telling me that for over 2 weeks, I've been sitting here swinging my swords around like a maniac when I could have simply just upgraded my Passive higher and made my movements more fluid…" With a glare at his AN, Aoni started moving from corpse to corpse, gathering up all the insect's ECs and harvesting usable resources from the 2-star ones.

"INDEED MY ASS!"
BANG
Shouting and hurling the corpse of a 1-Star insect at the ice bridge out of anger, Aoni's nostrils flared, and he punched the air, intending to smash the text box only to have his hand phase through like it didn't exist, as per usual.
In his defense, given how much was listed in each display, along with how often things were changing, it was already difficult for the Lad to keep track of all the statistics, so the fact he overlooked something as simple as a small arrow indicating he could add points to a stat, wasn't that unheard of; however, it was entirely unacceptable to Aoni.

All that he could do was stew in his anger and work like a good little ant, extracting materials and moving the corpse to giant piles while venting his frustration when he could.
---
After several hours and a few random stragglers making their way into the cave later, Aoni finally dusted himself off and took note of the 12 giant piles of bodies.
At first, he'd initially planned on using a quick disposal method such as burning the corpses, but he soon realized just how big of an undertaking that would present.
For starters, the relocation of hundreds of logs would be necessary, on top of cutting down that many trees, so that in and of itself was a problem, considering it would be up to him and Glacia to move them.
But the next issue was where to burn everything because there was ZERO chance of doing that inside the cavern; that much smoke in an enclosed space was a recipe for disaster.
Meaning the only other option would be moving all the bodies outside.
"Or…I could make a chest, upgrade it a bunch of times till it gets a bigger internal storage space, dump the bodies in there, and burn the chest…wait, I wonder if they're worth anything." Blinking four times rapidly, Aoni suddenly remembered he would be returning to Terra in a couple of days and would need to present something to the government.
"They want specific territory-exclusive resources, so I should grab them."
Although it was a topic he'd rather avoid, Aoni knew he was in deep shit when he got back; however, the memory of what his AN said the last time the subject was brought up didn't escape the Lad's mind.
What do you think?
