Chapter 160: 160、Where exactly is the thing hidden (1)_1 Chapter 160: 160、Where exactly is the thing hidden (1)_1 Gazing down at the closed and locked door, Jian Qing’s lip twitched slightly.
An Chong was always careful about his study room, the electronic lock of which required a password.
Jian Qing took out her mobile phone, typing on the phone with one hand pressing on the electronic lock with the other. Not long after, the electronic lock let out a ‘beep’ and the door opened.
She returned the phone to her pocket, pushed open the door and gracefully stepped in.
After entering, she once again closed the door, only then she turned around to look around the study. A faint aroma of ink permeated in the room. The layout was strikingly similar to the old man’s study.
Her time was limited. An Yu and the rest could be back at any moment. Jian Qing quickly headed towards the desk.
She didn’t find what she was looking for after rummaging through every drawer in the desk. Closing the last drawer, she stood upright, her brows knit together.
How can it not be here?
Perhaps An Chong had hidden it somewhere else?
Jian Qing raised her eyes to survey the room, leaving no corner unchecked. Her gaze then landed on a safe hidden in a corner on the left side of a large bookshelf.
Could it be inside there?
She bypassed the desk, heading straight towards the safe. Squatting down to examine the safe, the cool metallic feel of it was palpable. The dial lock gave it a complicated and mysterious feel.
Jian Qing’s slender fingers touched the dial lock— this was a custom-made safe. An Chong must indeed value its contents a lot to have a safe specially made for it.
This safe was different from the ordinary ones. Without either the password or the fingerprint, one wrong attempt would trigger an alarm and the safe would lock down.
Facing this lock, even the world’s number one burglar would take quite a while to open it. Unfortunately, Jian Qing was the one encountering this safe. In the realms of electronics and the Internet, she was undoubtedly the queen.
Jian Qing took out her phone, swiftly removed the back cover, and took out a silver chip the size of a fingernail.
After placing the chip close to the fingerprint scanner, a faint green light flashed on the dial lock after two or three seconds. She gave a light smirk as she replaced the chip back into her phone
Done!
She carefully opened the safe, revealing a stack of thick file pouches inside. Jian Qing had no interest in these files. She skimmed through every inch of the safe, but still failed to find what she wanted.
Once everything was restored to its original state, a hint of disappointment clouded Jian Qing’s eyes.
Where on earth did An Chong hide it?
Having spent quite a while squatting on the floor, Jian Qing stood up and left the study. As she descended the stairs, the living room was still deserted.
Thinking of the old man who was still waiting, Jian Qing left.
…
“Grandfather, it’s been a while since I last came to see you. How have you been recently?” In the courtyard, An Rong served tea to the old man, asking with concern.
“Today, I specifically brought Xiangxiang and Linlin to keep you company so that you wouldn’t be bored all by yourself.”
Upon catching their mother’s discrete look, Yang Xiang and Yang Lin simultaneously greeted the old man, “Grandfather!”
The old man looked at the tea in front of him, untouched. He responded coolly, “Don’t you two have work today?”
“Work isn’t as important as Grandfather,” Yang Xiang sweetly replied.
An Rong looked approvingly at her daughter, and added, “That’s right, Grandfather. Xiangxiang and Linlin insisted on coming over first thing in the morning to chat with you. They also brought some nourishing supplements for you. I gave them to the kitchen to prepare, and will have them sent over later.”
The old man uttered a noncommittal grunt, his face maintaining a stern expression.
Observing the old man’s lukewarm reaction, Yang Xiang and Yang Lin exchanged a glance, gritting their teeth in displeasure.
Why did he treat Jian Qing with such warmth and them with such indifference? This clear favoritism was too much.
A faint smile flickered on Qiubo’s face, who was deep in thought. The old man had weathered unimaginable storms throughout his life and had encountered all kinds of people. He could easily distinguish between sincerity and pretension. Their attempt today was most likely in vain.
After a brief silence, An Rong forced a smile and said, “Grandfather, do you know when Older Brother will be back?”
“Why do you want to know when Azhe will do what?” The old man’s eyes narrowed, and he asked in a low voice.
With an awkward smile, An Rong explained, “Nothing, just curious. Older Brother didn’t even show up for your birthday. I thought something must have held him back overseas, so I’m concerned.”
“Is that so?” the old man responded, “Then you can call him yourself.”
At his words, An Rong found her cheeks flush.
If she dared to call him, she wouldn’t need to be so cautiously sussing out the situation right now.
From childhood to adulthood, out of all her siblings, who they feared most was their eldest brother, An Zhe. Besides, given what had happened in the past, her older brother most likely harbored resentment towards her and An Man. She didn’t dare to approach him without reason.
Seeing the puzzled look on their mother’s face, Yang Xiang and Yang Lin exchanged a quizzical look. In their memory, their elder uncle was always out of Beijing, rarely appearing but once every year or two, who was quite cold and intimidating.
Why was it that, whenever their mother and aunt mentioned their elder uncle, they had complex expressions, with a tinge of fear even?
Remembering the objective of her visit this time, An Rong summoned the courage to continue, “Grandfather, Older Brother really is not young anymore. Even if he plans to stay unmarried all his life, he can’t possibly not have any offspring.”
The old man looked up at her, and a hint of coldness flashed deep in his eyes. “Well then, do you have any suggestions?” he asked calmly.
Taking it as a sign that the old man had taken her words into consideration, An Rong felt a surge of joy. She continued, “Grandfather, Linlin and Xiangxiang have always admired and respected Older Brother. So, I was thinking, perhaps we could have one of them adopted by Older Brother–”
“Nonsense!” The old man’s face darkened as he sternly interrupted her unfinished sentence. “An Rong, do you even know what you’re saying?”
It wasn’t surprising that she was so free to visit him today, given what she was aiming for.
“Grandfather?” Taken aback by the old man’s disproportionate reaction, An Rong shot up from her chair.
Yang Xiang and Yang Lin were also too scared to even breathe. They exchanged apprehensive looks, puzzled by the old man’s sudden fit of anger.
Qiubo walked up at just the right moment, soothing the old man’s back, telling him not to lose his temper.
He glanced at the pale-looking An Rong, a silent chuckle in his heart. It seemed that the fourth daughter hadn’t learned her lesson from what happened year ago and dared to set her sights on the eldest son.
“An Rong, who told you to have one of Yang Xiang’s daughters adopted by Azhe? Whose idea is it?” The old man glared angrily at An Rong. “Are you scheming against Azhe again?”
What do you think?
