Chapter 161 - 161 161、Questioning the Truth (2)_1
Chapter 161: 161、Questioning the Truth (2)_1 Chapter 161: 161、Questioning the Truth (2)_1 An Rong dared not meet the gaze of Old Master An. In a flurry, she said, “No, it’s not like that, Grandfather. I just saw that Big Brother has been single for so many years, so I thought that either Xiangxiang or Linlin could be adopted under his name to prevent him from being…alone when he gets old…”
“Enough, I don’t want to hear your excuses.” Old Master An pounded heavily on the table with his calloused hands, angrily interjecting.
“Don’t bring this matter up in front of me again. Now, you three vacate this old mansion at once. I don’t wish to see you for the time being.”
“Grandpa!” Yang Xiang and her sister had not expected that they would also bear the brunt of his anger, their gazes full of grievance as they looked at Old Master An.
“Master, Miss Qing is here.” An family’s steward, Qiu Bo, announced.
Upon hearing this, An Rong and the others turned to look, their expressions changing simultaneously at the sight of Jian Qing in her neat attire.
Why had she come?
Jian Qing merely glanced at them, a smirk playing on her lips; she looked amused.
Adopting their daughter to An Zhe? How imaginative could An Rong get?
It seemed like she had heard some earth-shattering secret!
Seeing Jian Qing, Old Master An’s somber expression softened somewhat, “Qing girl, here, come and sit.”
Ignoring An Rong and the others, Jian Qing took a seat across from Old Master An.
“Qiu Bo, take these three out.” Old Master An, seeing that An Rong and the others were still standing their ground, ordered.
On hearing his words, An Rong’s complexion turned ashen. She resented that Old Master An gave her no face in front of Jian Qing.
Yang Xiang and her sister stared at Jian Qing, recognizing the outfit she was wearing as a recent release from San Yue Qi. A flicker of jealousy and envy flashed in their eyes.
They remembered reading reports of Jian Qing and Quan Jingwu’s affair dominating the news yesterday, which only intensified the sisters’ envy.
It seemed that Jian Qing had all the good fortune. Now she had Quan Jingwu to rely on, surely she would become more arrogant.
An Rong darkened at Qiu Bo’s approach, “Linlin, let’s go.”
Reluctantly stomping her foot, Yang Xiang and the others turned to follow An Rong out of the mansion.
Once the joint disappeared, Old Master An felt relieved. Recalling An Rong’s words, he subconsciously looked at Jian Qing.
He hesitantly asked, “Qing girl, when did you arrive? What did you hear earlier?”
“What should I have heard?” Jian Qing artfully responded.
“Never mind, it’s nothing.” Old Master An tried to peer into her thoughts but was unable to discern anything.
Jian Qing tapped her fingers lightly on the table, not seeming inclined to speak.
“Qing girl, you and Quan Jingwu, are you-” Old Master An began, unsure of how to best choose his words.
“Just as the news says,” Jian Qing interrupted.
“When will you come back to live in the old mansion?”
“I’m not sure; I don’t have any plans to, at the moment.”
A helplessness crossed Old Master An’s wrinkle-lined face, “What will it take for you to come back?”
After a long silence, Jian Qing began to speak, “Actually, there’s been something I’ve been meaning to ask you. I hope you can give me a truthful answer.”
Old Master An’s heartbeat quickened, “What is it?”
She looked up at him, her eyes clear and steady, “I am not of An bloodline, so why are you so insistent on calling me an An? Why would you rather protect me – a child not of An blood – instead of aligning yourself with An Yu and the others, who are the true An bloodline?”
Qiu Bo, standing by, looked startled. The trouble he had anticipated was finally here.
Her questions took Old Master An off-guard and he quickly responded, “Who said you’re not of the An family? Who’s been spreading such nonsense?”
Jian Qing calmly observed his reaction, then casually replied, “My mother told me. I believe she wouldn’t lie to me.”
Moreover, she did not feel any close connection to An Chong; all she felt for him was utter disdain.
“What else did your mother tell you?” Old Master An queried, his face growing serious.
“If you wish to know what else my mother told me, then please answer my earlier questions. Why are you so convinced that I am of the An bloodline? More importantly, am I really An Chong’s daughter?” Jian Qing insisted, giving him no room to divert the subject.
Old Master An paused, a complicated expression darkening his eyes.
“This…”
The atmosphere grew heavy and tense.
Jian Qing taunted, “What, you’re not willing to answer?”
“Qing girl, I…”
“If you aren’t willing to answer, then let it be. I’ll find out on my own. But there is one thing I am certain of – I refuse to believe that I am An Chong’s child. On this point, I trust my mother’s words.”
With that, Jian Qing rose and left without looking back.
This time, Old Master An did not stop her. He didn’t know how to respond to her questioning.
As Jian Qing’s figure disappeared from sight, Qiu Bo finally said, “Master, perhaps you should tell Miss Qing the truth about what happened. Maybe then her anger towards the An family will lessen,”
Jian Qing, who had turned back halfway and hidden herself, tensed at his words. What did this mean? Was Old Master An really hiding something from her?
What was it that Qiu Bo was about to say but didn’t finish?
Her intuition told her that Qiu Bo was definitely hiding something. The unspoken part of his sentence was significant – perhaps it was the truth she’d been searching for.
Seeing his master fall into deep thought and wave him off, Qiu Bo replied, “Yes, sir,” and left quietly.
Seeing Qiu Bo approach, Jian Qing quickly moved aside. Only after he had walked away, did she leave.
From hearing Old Master An and Qiu Bo’s conversation, Jian Qing felt a growing fog of mystery enveloping her. She desperately wanted to pierce through it, but continued to be trapped in it, unable to see clearly or grasp the truth.
Having made a phone call to Quan Jingwu, Jian Qing stood at the entrance of the old An mansion waiting for him.
She leaned against the gate, squinted at the surroundings, rubbed her brows, feeling a little tired.
“Jian Qing!”
A sweet, angry voice rang out. Jian Qing opened her eyes and looked in the direction of the voice.
Someone was picking a fight!
The people coming were the kicked out An Rong and her daughters. They hadn’t driven over today and were now waiting for the Yang family’s driver to pick them up.
Jian Qing crossed her arms and looked at them indifferently, “What do you want?”
“Jian Qing, you’re really good. You came to Beijing not long ago, but you’ve already hooked up with Master Jing. So, how does it feel to be so proud?” The words that Yang Xiang spat out were dripping with acid jealousy.
A light laugh escaped Jian Qing, “And what if I am? Unlike some people who cannot eat grapes and then call them sour. Why don’t you show me what you are proud of?”
Yang Xiang’s face turned red with anger, “You…”
An Rong couldn’t stand to see her daughter losing to Jian Qing. She interjected furiously, “Jian Qing, stop boasting. Do you believe Quan Jingwu truly loves you? He’s merely attracted to you because you’re new to him. And you? You’re nothing more than a fox, a temptress who doesn’t know her place.”
What do you think?
