Chapter 223 223: Sore Spot.
Arthur wouldn't be able to claim that he had done the family a favor of Brian was eliminated. So it would be a loss to him too.
After he was done stomping the resistance out of Brian, he said to him, "At least you didn't cave in beg for mercy. You remained stubborn until the bitter end. That is commendable."
Then he said to the crowd of onlookers, "Who is next?"
No one stepped forward. Some people even shook their heads to show just how much they didn't want to resist him.
He nodded when he saw their behavior, "Good. Now hand over what I asked for."
He began to walk away from Brian. On the way back, he said, "Don't try to play games with me. Don't waste my time, or you will regret it."
"I am a reasonable person. If you give me what I want, there won't be any trouble. But if you try to resist, you won't even be able to receive what he just received. I will eliminate you immediately."
He returned to his position at the edge of the island and waited for them there. He didn't wait for long. The archers came over and gave him their arrows.
The lady that tried to unite people against him saw that her plan wasn't going to work. So she came up to him to plead with him.
She said, "You're very strong. I'm sure that you will be able to do well on this test alone. But if you work with others, I'm sure that you will be able to do better. You need us and we need you. Together, we can perform better."
She was hoping to use a soft approach to convince him. But she failed. She failed so bad that he swung his bow at her.
He didn't say anything to her. He simply replied with his bow.
The bow smashed into her and caused her protective runes to overload. She was eliminated immediately.
He sneered, "What utter nonsense? Are you so eager to be eliminated?"
Then he returned to glaring at everyone and pressuring them to do what he wanted. The sight of another person being eliminated cowed the crowd and sped up the rate of surrender.
Maybe he would have let her go and ignored her if she hadn't said something so stupid. But she had to open her mouth and say that he needed them. That offended him deeply.
He doesn't think he needs anyone. In fact, he is sure that these people will only drag him down. They are too weak to be of any assistance.
Even if he were wrong and he truly needed the help of others, it wouldn't be her place to come up to him and tell him to his face. If he needed people, he would make them help him.
For example, if he needs arrows, instead of going around asking people for the arrows or begging them for the arrows as if they have a choice in the matter, he would rather beat them up and force them to give him the arrows.
Another example of how to make people useful to him is to leave them alive when he needs performance points. Then he will hunt them when they have a lot of performance points.
Surely, in the case of his need for performance points, this need can't be solved by asking people to give him their performance points. The only solution is to take it.
All in all, what she said about him needing others insulted him. It is a matter of pride, and she insulted his pride.
He said to himself, "I am the best of the best, and I don't need anyone."
He said that, but he still glared at people and intimidated them into giving him the arrow that he needed. He wanted to ignore the part about him needing their arrows, but she had to bring up his sore spot.
This put him in a bad mood. But then he saw the mountain of arrows beside him, and his mood became better.
He smiled and nodded in satisfaction. Then he picked up the bow and began shooting the beasts in the sea.
Shooting beasts from the land needed excellent marksmanship and superior power. It needed both skills and raw power.
Skills are needed to target the beasts in question. These skills have to be high because very little can be seen of the target in the dark water, and the target is always moving.
To top it off, a lot of raw power is also needed to hit and kill the monster from the land. The movement and resistance of water are higher than air, so it is more difficult to shoot something in the water than shooting something on land.
The arrow has to dive through the water, resist the waves, strike the moving target, and injure the target enough to kill it with one hit. If any of these four steps is missing, then the examinees can forget about reaping points from land without going into the water.
To put things into perspective, what he is targeting are beasts at the tenth mortal coil. Even the weakest beasts are at the seventh mortal coil. These are beasts that the examinees will find difficult to kill with one arrow even if those beasts were on land and stationary.
These beasts are very powerful. They have incredible strength, outstanding defense comparable to armor, and extraordinary vitality.
It is very difficult for them to be injured by one arrow on land. And even if an arrow manages to bypass their outstanding defense, it is nearly impossible for the arrow to kill them with one shot.
This is when the beasts are stationary. Once they begin to move, the matter of killing them becomes very difficult. If the resistance of water and its influence on arrows is added to the mix, then the examinees at the first mortal coil can forget about killing the beasts in the water from their position on the land.
What do you think?
