Chapter 6: The First Training Exercise – Quirk Control
Location: U.A. High School – Training Grounds
The day after the Soft Ball Throw, the students were once again gathered at U.A. High’s training grounds, eager to face their first proper training exercise. The soft morning sunlight bathed the area, and the sounds of birds chirping filled the air, but the students couldn’t afford to let their guard down. After all, they were here to be trained into heroes, and that meant challenges were never far away.
Izuku stood next to his classmates, still thinking about the Soft Ball Throw from the day before. He had made a good impression, but there was so much more to learn. His control over his wind sword was improving, but he couldn’t help but feel that he still had a long way to go.
The students exchanged excited murmurs as they waited.
“Settle down,” a familiar voice called out, cutting through the chatter. “We’re not here to stand around and talk. It’s time to get to work.”
Aizawa stood at the front of the training grounds, arms folded, as usual, his expression stern. He didn’t waste any time with pleasantries.
“Today’s lesson will focus on control. The soft ball throw yesterday was a test of your raw power. Now, we’re going to see how well you can control your quirks in various situations. You’ll each be given a specific task to complete, and I’ll be observing your performance.”
He glanced around at the students, his red eyes sharp as he took them all in.
“I want you to start with a simple exercise. You’ll each be given a set of obstacles to navigate, but you can only use your quirk in specific ways. If you can’t manage to control it, you’ll fail. No excuses.” Aizawa’s gaze swept over the students.
“Each of you will be assigned an obstacle course that will test your quirk control. It’s not enough to just make it through. I want to see how efficiently and precisely you can use your quirks to overcome the challenges ahead. Don’t hold back, but don’t waste your energy either.”@@novelbin@@
With those words, the class broke into action. The students stood ready for what was to come, each of them eager to prove themselves.
Izuku Midoriya’s Turn
Izuku’s heart raced as he stood at the start of the obstacle course. Aizawa had assigned him a simple yet complex set of challenges: navigating moving platforms, dodging fire traps, and scaling a high wall. He was the first to go, and with his earlier performance still fresh in his mind, he couldn’t afford to hesitate.
“Alright, Izuku. You’ve got this. Control… control…”
he muttered under his breath as he clenched the Soft Ball Throw in his hand. He was prepared this time. With his quirk, it wasn’t about raw power—it was about using it precisely and efficiently.Izuku sprinted toward the first obstacle, a rapidly moving platform. Instead of simply jumping, he activated his wind sword. The wind was strong this time—he could feel the difference. He focused, narrowing the wind’s path to give him just enough force to propel himself onto the platform without overshooting.
The wind sword was harder to manage than the day before, but Izuku adjusted quickly. He landed with a soft thud on the platform, steadying himself. He smiled in relief. "Okay, one down."
However, the next obstacle wasn’t as easy. A set of fire traps shot bursts of flames at random intervals, and the timing was tricky. "I can’t be too reckless. One wrong move and I’ll be burned," Izuku thought. He could feel the heat radiating from the fire traps, but he had to focus on keeping his movements smooth.
“I can’t use the wind to just blow it away... I need to find another way,” he muttered. He couldn’t just force his way through. He needed precision, control.
Izuku raised his hand, redirecting the wind carefully to deflect the fire as it shot toward him. He used the wind to guide the flames away from his body, taking small steps and ensuring each gust was perfectly timed. As he moved through the fire traps, he felt his heart pounding, but his quirk was responding more smoothly now.
“Yes! I’m doing it.”
Finally, he reached the wall. It was high, and the ledges were spaced unevenly, making it nearly impossible to scale without the right control. Izuku narrowed his wind sword, this time using it like a powerful gust of air to propel himself upward.
He took a deep breath and leapt. His wind lifted him higher, and he adjusted it just in time to grab onto a ledge. He climbed, using the wind to help him maintain his grip as he scaled the wall.
After what felt like an eternity, Izuku reached the top, gasping for air. His body ached, but his face lit up in pride. He had done it. He had controlled his quirk, and now, for the first time, he felt confident in his ability to manage his wind sword.
“Not bad,” Aizawa said as Izuku descended. “But remember, it’s not just about passing the course. It’s about using the least energy possible and completing the task in the most efficient way.”
Izuku nodded, feeling a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration. He had passed the course, but he could tell that Aizawa’s standards were higher than just completing the obstacles.
Bakugo’s Turn
Next was Bakugo, who marched to the starting line with his usual scowl. His explosive quirk was a perfect fit for a course like this—powerful, fast, and direct. But Aizawa had been clear: it wasn’t about brute force.
Bakugo stood in front of the first obstacle: a set of moving walls that closed in on the participants at regular intervals. Most people would have tried to jump over them or squeeze through, but Bakugo had a different idea.
He ignited his hands, the explosions creating small blasts that propelled him forward with intense force. He expertly dodged the walls, using precise bursts of explosions to speed through the course. However, his style was still very aggressive—there was a lot of power, but little finesse.
“Bakugo, I want to see more control, not just raw strength,” Aizawa called out.
Bakugo grit his teeth but didn’t argue. He had been in a hurry, but he now focused more. His next attempt was more controlled, the explosions lighter but more strategic, allowing him to glide through the obstacles without wasting energy.
“That’s better,” Aizawa commented, but his tone remained neutral.
Todoroki’s Turn
Todoroki’s quirk, a powerful combination of ice and fire, made him a formidable opponent for any obstacle course. He had quickly proved himself in the Soft Ball Throw, and now, he showed the same precision with the obstacles.
Using his ice, Todoroki slid effortlessly across the moving platforms and created frozen paths to avoid the fire traps. When the final wall appeared, he didn’t hesitate. With a flash of fire, he melted the ice that was blocking his path, creating a smooth path for himself.
“Impressive,” Aizawa commented, but there was still that same, emotionless gaze. “You’ve mastered the basics of your quirk. But there’s always room for improvement.”
The students continued to take their turns, each of them facing their own unique challenges. Some struggled, while others excelled. But Aizawa was always watching, his eyes calculating, never showing a hint of approval or disapproval.
By the end of the exercise, the students were exhausted, but there was a sense of accomplishment in the air. They had learned something new about their quirks today. They had learned to control them, to use them efficiently. But there was still a long road ahead.
As they gathered together, Aizawa’s voice rang out once again.
“You’ve completed today’s training,” Aizawa said. “But don’t get comfortable. Tomorrow will be even tougher. If you want to survive here, you’ll need to do more than just get by. You’ll need to keep improving.”
The students nodded, their resolve hardening. They were ready.
