Lu Weixi knew he was bloody, but she had no idea his body was also so severely wounded.

Her fingers gently traced the spot on his back where he’d been hit. He shivered violently at her touch, his brows furrowing slightly.

Lu Weixi quickly withdrew her hand. “Does it hurt?”

Qin Zhiyou shook his head. “No, it’s nothing. It just looks worse than it is. When my father used to beat me as a child, it was much worse.”

The lighter he made it seem, the more she felt for him. She carefully covered him back up with his clothes. Qin Zhiyou beckoned her closer; she laid down next to him, their faces opposite each other.

Lying like this, she could see the bandages tied around his forehead, like a swipe of courage in an animated film. His slightly disheveled bangs gave him a handsome yet somewhat desolate look.

“I’m sorry. If it weren’t for me today, you wouldn’t have ended up like this.” He tenderly moved a few strands of hair from her forehead, smoothing them behind her ear.

“What are you talking about? If I don’t protect you, who will I protect?” Qin Zhiyou’s voice was low, as if he were speaking through a lump of coffee candy in his throat, a deep sweetness laced with bitterness.

When she came out, Qin Zhiyou’s medication had already been changed, and his IV drip had started. The fast drip rate made quick ticking sounds.

The drip would help his bleeding wounds heal faster. But what Qin Zhiyou cared about was, “Doctor, can I take a bath?”

“What do you think?” The nurse didn’t bother to waste words with him. Once she had finished her work, she prepared to leave with the medical cart, but not before instructing, “Call me when the drip is done.”
