My kitsune System

Chapter 3

System initializing, he whispered in his heart as piercing lights got through his eyes. The light made him uneasy but he was too weak to move.

He could hear voices all around him, but he couldn’t make out the words they said.

He opened his eyes a bit to see people all around him. The place seemed too bright that he couldn’t make out any faces.

He tried to speak but he no words left his mouth. And before he knew it he felt his consciousness slipping away. And he was in the darkness again.

The words appeared again but this time they said a different thing:

[Reconstructing host’s body...]

[Reconstruction started...]

After Dan read these words, a heat wave engulfed his whole body. But this wasn’t the only thing going on with his body. He felt as though tiny creatures were moving through his body and stitching it up. Their movements burnt through him.

[Reconstruction completed...]

Dan saw the words again.

He saw and heard nothing now that he was in the darkness alone. Just once in a while did, he hears a beep.

Not being able to move he just laid there.

“How long will you continue to play dead?” he heard a voice say.

Who is the person that just spoke Dan wondered.

He tried to open his eyes.

And his eyes were met by a bright light.

The light was sharp it hurt his eyes that he had to shut his eyes again.

Dan then decided to use his hands to provide shade to his eyes as he opened them.

He looked around to notice the room was brightly lit.

It was painted white, with other light colors.

It seemed he was in a mid-size room. Around him there were some medical equipment’s.

BEEP!!!

Dan heard the sound again.

He turned to his side and he saw a monitor, that showed the world he was still alive.

Wait aren’t I suppose to be dead? How comes I am alive? Dan thought to himself

How comes I am…. ALIVE?

“Welcome back” a voice said.

“How am I still al… alive?” Dan said as he froze.

He couldn’t believe it, was he really seeing this he asked himself. Or was it an imagination

Before him stood the little girl. The same little girl at the bar. As he was seeing her up close, she looked no older than fourteen.

Her skin was still as pale as before, the former fury in her eyes was now replaced with nothing. Her eyes held no emotions.

“How are you… here? Where am I?” Dan asked this questions as he looked around.

“Where do you think?” came her reply, not really sparing him a glance as she walked and took a sit.

Dan watched her sit and the looked around. He looked around the room, the bright light, change of clothes which didn’t cover his back. Also, the monitor by his side that always beeped.

Oh he now knew where he was… he then bowed his head in shame. It was quite obvious from the very beginning he just never took notice.

“When you’re done sulking tell me” The girl said.

Wait what? Dan was confused.

Dan raised his head.

“Who are you?” were the words that came out of his mouth.

“That is a privilege a puny human like you doesn’t have”

Puny human? Who is she? And why does she call me human like she isn’t one? Dan thought.

What does she actually want from me then?

“What do you want?” Dan asked.

“What I want? Hmmm, what can a puny human like you give me? Let’s see, I think…. Nothing”

Dan watched her. Her demeanor never flicked even once.

“Okay, then why save me?”

“Save you? I’ll never do that. And you ask too many questions” She, said as her face was filled with irritation.

“But one thing you should know is that you’re a chosen. The Goddess favor’s you and decided to bring you back”

“Bring me back? What do you mean bring me back? And why?” Dan said as he looked at the girl for answers.

The girl then stood up from her seat. Her eyes scanned Dan. Her face filled with disdain.

“I don’t know why she chose you? You don’t look it. And I really believe she made a mistake”

“But she has chosen already sadly” the little girl’s face became down cast.

Then she raised her head and looked at Dan.

“Survive and don’t let them get you and I’ll answer some of your questions” With these last words the girl vanished before Dan’s sight like she was never there.

Dan was now all alone inside the room.

“What did she mean by survive?”

And then a notification popped before him.

What is that? How is that possible?

Dan swiped his hand before him. But he couldn’t seem to touch it.

How?

What is in it?

As if receiving a mental command from Dan, the notification opened up.

And it read-

Quest received:

Escape and don’t allow yourself get caught.

Reward

 Ten divine embers.

Escape? From who? What are divine embers? What is going on?

Dan was still in his head when he heard some voices as they spoke in the hallway.

He then stepped on the cold hard floor and headed toward the door.

Dan’s feet at first felt wobbly as he took some steps. He could hear as his bones pulped. His body ached with every step he took.

Not only did his body ache. But the floor was so cold that made his feet numb. It was so cold and numb that the sole of his feet hurt.

But then he was still able to reach the white door of the room. As Dan stood before the door of the room, he looked through its see-through glass and glanced at the people who whose voices he had heard.

As he looked out into the hallway, he could see medical personnels rush from one ward to another. If not because it was a hospital and lives were at stake, Dan would have described the place as chaotic.

And in the middle of all these chaos stood a doctor, a nurse and some men dressed in uniform. But these weren’t just ordinary men in uniform, but they were….

The police.

Why are the police here? I didn’t commit any crime so why? It was an accident, wasn’t it?

As Dan’s mind raced to understand why the police were there and then realization hit him.

What if it’s because I didn’t die? Not only did I survive but also without any scars?

Dan thought as he observed his body. Her words now made sense to him. Not to get caught.

He now needed to find a way to escape from this place. He needed to leave before they came to his ward.

Before they caught him and took him to a lab for experiments.

And as if he had read Dan’s thoughts the Doctor pointed towards Dan’s ward.

I need to leave this place

As the thoughts echoed through his head, his eyes darted round the room in search of an exit but then there was none.

“He should still be asleep”

Dan heard the nurse’s voice which was now not so far away anymore.

She escorted the two policemen toward his ward. With one of the police men looking older than the other.

They walked in an uneven space. With their steps getting faster than the last.

They were almost upon him.

His options now very limited. What was he to do? It was just him, a room, a monitor, a four-storey high window and a chair.

What am I to do?

Dan thought as he could feel all sense of hope evade him. The trios step behind the door was getting louder.

He could hear his own heart beat hard against his own chest. His hands were now filled with sweat.

The footsteps had now gotten ever closer just a few steps before the door.

Is this it then? Dan thought.
