Chapter 4
The policemen had now almost reached the room of the patient. With the nurse who was in charge of leading the way.
And when they were almost upon patient’s door.
BANG!!!
They heard a large crashing sound from with the room. Immediately the nurse sank back and the two police men now took charge. With their hands now drawn to their holster.
The two men stayed on the opposite sides of the door. Using their eyes, they signaled each other and then broke through the door.
There it was….
An empty room. Everything within the room seemed to be in place. The bed, the medical equipment.
And there it was….
What had caused the loud crashing sound.
The two men just stood there in amazement. They just watched as the wind drifted to and fro the room.
Some parts of the curtain floated in, while the rest seemed to have been tied together with the curtain rod.
It seems the curtain used to tie the rod was used to get down.
Beside the window were glass shards and a chair which close to the window.
The hole seemed big enough for someone to pass through. But then the height was quite large.
“I heard he survived a car crash but is this even possible?”
The younger cop spoke as he kept staring at the window.
“How many storeys high is this?” The older cop spoke.
Getting no reply, he turned towards the nurse who was still in shock.
“This should be the third floor” she spoke in a shaky voice.
“Then he couldn’t have gotten far then” the older cop spoke and left the room.
As they left the room with the door shut. From under the bed crawled Dan.
He was breathing heavily; his hands were still shaking from the event that had just transpired.
I can’t believe I really pulled that off
Still in fear and amazement, Dan was able to sneak out of the hospital till he found himself in the embrace of the streets once more.
As he walked down the streets he could feel an ethereal string pull at him.
He followed the string to find himself in an alley way. In it stood the little girl.
As usual her face was devoid of any emotions but with less disgust this time around.
At least someone has a change of attitude Dan thought to himself as he stood in her presence.
“Took you long enough” she said not batting him an eye.
His face with no expression on it kept looking at her, as if unamused.
“I have done as you have asked” Dan said.
He waited for a reply but as usual he got none.
“So now tell me who are you and whats going on?”
“Still with the same old question….” She said as she walked around. “You need to learn to ask the right questions. For example, what am I?”
As the words escaped her lips she immediately vanished and Dan was alone.
He turned round but he could find no trace of her. But he knew he wasn’t alone as he could still feel her presence around him.
It came closer till it was literally by his ear and he could hear it whisper-
“And what are you?”
As turned his head, he wasn’t met with the face of the little girl anymore.
He was met with something different.
Someone who was different.
The little girl had now grown and was now a young lady. Her hair draping down her side as she smiled at Dan.
Her eyes now had a slit, like cat eyes but bigger. They were amber in color.
And then…… it glowed.
Her body in response to that shrunk. Her body now looked all feeble. Her skin slacked and fell. Her shiny hair, dried up. It lost its shine and became dried. From it roots it started turning grey.
Dan’s breathe froze, his heartbeat getting slower and slower each passing second.
What… what is going on? How can she? Is this a dream?
Dan’s mind ran wild with questions. At this point his brain had stopped thinking and his body was just reacting.
Dan didn’t know how or when but he had already started stepping back. He didn’t know where he would run too. Where he would hide, all he knew was that he needed to get away. His whole instincts screamed danger.
But then where will he run to? The police…. Same people he had gone through a lot to evade.
Dan just watched as the little girl kept transforming, and now she was going down on all four.
He could hear the bones breaking, her fingers elongating.
Fur sprouted all round her body.
And then she stopped.
She was now two times taller than Dan.
Her jaws were riddled with teeth, that were no less sharp than blades.
She had no hands but paws.
She’s definitely no human. I need to run.
Dan looked at the narrow alley way and how far she was from.
I can do this… I have too…. I just need too….
And before he could complete his train of thought, his body had already bolted.
His body ran with so much speed than it had never done before.
“STOP!!!”
Came a roar behind him.
And immediately his body froze. No matter the mental command he gave it. His body didn’t dare move.
His bones and joints paid him no heed.
All he could do was watch the shadow of the beast approach him.
He watched as the shadow drew nearer to him and stood directly behind him.
He could feel the snout as it came near to his head and drew in scent.
The breath of the beast caressed his neck.
He could feel it.
The uncertainty that grew out of his heart.
The hair all round his body rose in understanding.
Dan closed his eyes and waited for the inevitable.
But then nothing happened. A minute and two passed but he didn’t feel his neck being ripped out. Nothing had pounced on him.
He was just there.
Dan opened his eyes and saw the same little girl before him.
She said nothing but the look on her face said it all. If I wanted you dead you will be.
Dan body was still frozen but he could still speak. And the first thing that came out of his mouth was
What are you? he said. The little girl could literally hear quaking in his voice.
And with that a wild smile grew across her face.
“That’s more like it” she said.
She began walking closer and closer to Dan.
He could hear his heart beat with every step she took closer to him.
His body wanted to run but he couldn’t move.
No matter how hard he tried, his limbs paid him no heed.
“I am what you call a Zenko”
Zenko? Zenko?
The words echoed in the heart of Dan.
“I am messenger of my Goddess, whose blessings and favor you have obtained”
“Why?” were the words that left Dan’s mouth. “Why me? Why not someone else? As you said I am not qualified”
The little girl remained silent saying no words but stared at Dan continuously.
“The answers to those questions I have not. But what I do know is that she has chosen you to be her champion” The little girl spoke and now her expression changed. It was now as cold as ice.
“DO NOT FAIL HER”
Her words rippled through every bone in his body.
Do not fail her? How? What am I to do?
Dan turned as he watched the girl walk away.
Mustering up courage he spoke
“What does she want me to do?”
“Participate in…… THE GOD GAMES “
What do you think?
