Chapter 552: Elina's Difficulty and Asking for Help
Inside the tent, Leon and Elina sat facing each other.
"So, how have you been, Elina?" Leon inquired gently as he took a sip of the tea Elina had made.
Elina didn't answer. She only looked at him with a hint of annoyance.
Her cheeks puffed up like a pufferfish as she crossed her arms in front of her chest.
"Before I answer, I have one question," she said in a sullen tone. "Why are you pretending to be such a wicked person? Do you know how scared I was?"
During Leon's act, Elina had been genuinely terrified and wanted to run away immediately.
However, she couldn't bear to leave behind the belongings she had brought from her hometown.
Fortunately, the so-called wicked man was just Leon in disguise; otherwise, she didn't even want to imagine what could have happened.
After all, she was new to Morvhal and still unfamiliar with its atmosphere, which was so different from Rothinia.
"Ahem!" Leon cleared his throat in embarrassment. "At first, I didn't intend to tease you. But after sensing the fear in your voice when I said I was looking for you, the idea came to me."
"Well, I know I was wrong, and I apologize."
Elina pursed her lips before letting out a long breath. "Alright, I forgive you. But don't do it again, okay? I was so scared."
She raised her index finger and pointed at him, making her look even more adorable.
Leon chuckled softly, nodding lightly. He took another sip of his tea before asking, "So, how did you end up in Morvhal City? Did you walk all the way from Rothinia?"
Rothinia, a border city near the Desert of Chaos, was over a dozen thousand kilometers from Morvhal, with many dangerous areas in between.
Although Elina was an elf with abilities beyond those of humans or demons, the journey was still perilous.
Elina took a sip of her tea and nodded. "Yes, sir, I did walk from Rothinia to Morvhal. But don't worry, because I..."
She then began to recount her journey in detail.
Five minutes later, Elina finished, and Leon finally understood.
"I see," Leon murmured, letting out a small sigh and looking at her with pity.
Elina had traveled in stages, moving from city to city, often stopping for three days at a time.
At first, she had enough provisions thanks to the gold coin Leon had given her. But as time passed, her funds dwindled, forcing her to work by opening a fortune-telling stall.
Unfortunately, just like in Rothinia, few people visited, and her income was insufficient.
As a result, she had been starving for the past few months. Fortunately, as an elf, she could survive on plants and nuts.
Even so, it was clear she had been enduring great hardship.
Elina smiled wryly, a hint of embarrassment in her voice as she replied, "It's my own fault, really. I heard there was a prosperous city on the southern side of the Holy Orthodoxy and hoped to make more money here. Unfortunately, I was mistaken. It's been ten days since I arrived, and the results are no different from Rothinia or any other city."
"Sometimes, I wonder… do humans really dislike fortune-telling? Or is there another reason?"
Her fortune-telling abilities were one hundred percent accurate.
By all logic, people should have been interested, yet the reality was quite the opposite.
Instead of a bustling crowd, her stall remained as quiet as ever, leaving her feeling a bit frustrated.
Leon chuckled softly, shaking his head. "You're not wrong, Elina. Fortune-telling is fascinating. But you might have overlooked one thing: humans fear the future."
Elina looked surprised. "Humans fear the future? Why? Wouldn't knowing it help them prepare for everything ahead?"
"Yes, you're right," Leon said, straightening up. He raised his index finger and continued, "But fate is unique and shrouded in mystery. For example, if a human knew when and where they would die, what do you think they'd do?"
Elina fell silent for a moment before replying, "Isn't it obvious? They'd do everything they could to avoid it."
Leon smiled. "Exactly. But have you ever considered that their attempt to avoid it might be the very thing that causes it?"
Elina froze, her eyes widening as her heart skipped a beat.
She had practiced fortune-telling many times, but she had never considered this.
While fortune-telling could reveal one's future, changing the outcome of an already determined fate was not something that could be easily guaranteed.
As Leon said, fate was indeed a strange and mysterious thing.
"Well, that's just one reason," Leon added with a quiet laugh. "There's another reason no one visits your stall—maybe they see you as a charlatan."
"After all, the profession of fortune-telling is sacred to us humans. Only those who are truly famous, like Louis, the Third Guardian of the Holy Orthodoxy, are trusted. Most street fortune-tellers are considered charlatans, and they might view you the same way."
Blue veins appeared on Elina's forehead at his words. She was a High Elf, and her fortune-telling ability was a natural gift she had been born with.
How could she be considered a charlatan?
However, Elina couldn't argue with Leon's words. Over the past few months, she had come to realize that the main reason she wasn't getting customers was because people suspected her of being a charlatan.
Additionally, she had seen many fortune-telling stalls in various cities, and most of them were run by charlatans pretending to have any real ability.
Reluctantly, Elina had to admit that Leon's words were completely accurate.
"Alright, let's set this topic aside," Leon said, finishing his tea in one gulp. "Elina, meeting you in Morvhal must be fate. Coincidentally, I'm on my way to Elven territory. Can you guide me there?"
"Eh!? Elven territory? Why now? What's your reason for going there?" Elina's face was filled with panic and concern.
Of course, she didn't feel wary of Leon—she knew he wasn't a malicious man.
If he had been, the fairy who made the contract with her wouldn't have shown such kindness toward him.
What puzzled her, however, was why Leon wanted to go there. Surely, there must be something urgent behind it.
Leon smiled slightly. "Sorry for not introducing myself properly, Elina. My name is Leon Kruger, and I am the Fated One."
What do you think?
