Chapter 18 - 18 18 What joke did you show the neighbors
Chapter 18: Chapter 18: What joke did you show the neighbors! Chapter 18: Chapter 18: What joke did you show the neighbors! “My parents haven’t even objected to me going to college yet.”
“Exactly!” The voice of Aunt Liu, the neighbor to the right of the Lu Family, also piped up.
But she was not seen.
Only the sound of moving things next door could be heard, and after a while, Aunt Liu also emerged, halfway up a ladder, popping out from the other side of the wall.
“I’ve been listening for a good while now. Youxi getting into college is a good thing, why would you stop her?” Aunt Liu pursed her lips. “Besides, it’s not like the Lu Family’s elders are paying for it. What’s wrong with her parents supporting her through college?”
“Our family’s money all went to sending Youbang to college; we don’t have money to support Lu Youxi too,” Old Madam Lu said, standing her ground.
“That’s even more wrong. If you can support Youbang going to college, why can’t you support Youxi?” Aunt Liu had always disapproved of the way the two Lu Family elders treated Lu Youxi and Liu Yushu.
But she was always an outsider and couldn’t really say anything.
But to clearly have the child capable of getting into college and then not letting her go, that’s too much!
How difficult it is for their village to produce a college student!
“Aunt Lin, Aunt Liu,” Lu Youxi said loudly, “since you’re both here, I would like to ask you to be witnesses for me.”
“Speak,” replied Aunt Lin. Unlike Aunt Liu, who might have come purely out of indignation, whether she also had a schadenfreude attitude for a bit of spectacle was unknown, but she responded particularly promptly, even a few seconds faster than Aunt Liu.
Aunt Liu nodded too, “Youxi, go ahead.”
“My grandpa just said that as long as I get into Jing University, he won’t stop me from going to college,” Lu Youxi said. “I hope Aunt Liu and Aunt Lin can witness this here. If I really do get into Jing University, I want you two to be witnesses so that my grandparents can’t deny what they’ve said.”
“Even though the tuition fees won’t come from my grandparents after I get in, my dad is filial, my mom is honest and kind, and they have never gone against my grandparents’ wishes. So to prevent some unpleasantness, it is better to make things clear now.”
“Youxi! What are you talking about?”
Lu Youxi turned around and saw Lu Zhenguo and Liu Yushu returning from the fields with their tools, just in time to hear Lu Youxi’s words.
Lu Zhenguo, furious and alarmed, strode toward Lu Youxi and said in a low voice, “Why can’t we discuss these matters within the family? Why do you have to say this in front of outsiders?”
He knew little of books but was aware that one should not air one’s dirty laundry in public!
What was Lu Youxi doing!
Lu Zhenguo grabbed Lu Youxi’s arm and started to head home.
“How come you’re not asking what this is all about, Old Lu?” Aunt Liu hurried down the ladder and after a little while, she ran out of her own front gate and into the Lu Family’s, “Why come back and blame the child for anything!”
“This is our family’s affair; why do you meddle in other people’s business! Aren’t your own children enough for you to worry about?” Old Madam Lu spat at her.
“Dad, my grandparents said they won’t let me go to college, even if I get in,” Lu Youxi looked up at Lu Zhenguo, “Dad, will you let me go to college?”
“So is it for this matter that we become the laughingstock of others?” Lu Zhenguo still felt the loss of face.
“You weren’t home, and only the grandparents were here. They said they wouldn’t let me go to college but wanted me to marry someone.” Lu Youxi said, “I don’t understand, if going to college doesn’t cost them anything, why won’t they let me go?”
“Yes, Old Lu, I and Old Liu were listening to it.” Aunt Lin said, “Youxi is a good student; everyone in the village knows that. She’s definitely capable of getting into college. How can you let the child miss out on college? Your family’s preference for boys over girls shouldn’t go this far! If my daughter could study that well, I’d sell everything I have to let her continue her education!”
“That’s right, and it’s as if only Youbang is your real son. You can support your nephew to go to college, but you can’t support your own daughter?” Aunt Liu said unhappily, “Uncle Lu even said if Youxi doesn’t get into Jing University, she shouldn’t go to another college either, claiming it’s a waste of money!”
“Who says I don’t support Youxi going to college?” Lu Zhenguo’s face turned red with embarrassment, he said loudly, “If Youxi gets into college, I’d sell everything I have to support her education, too! Youxi, if you have concerns, talk directly to me, would I not let you study? Why let the neighbors laugh at us!”
Lu Youxi pursed her lips, thinking to herself that it was precisely because Aunt Liu and Aunt Lin were there that Lu Zhenguo was now pushed to say these words outright.
Otherwise, she would still have to argue with the Lu Family’s elders later.
Even if Lu Zhenguo eventually agreed to let her attend college, she considered it a nuisance!
Better to settle things quickly.
“It was Grandma shouting in the yard that caught both aunts’ attention.” Lu Youxi said, “Our yard doesn’t have a roof over it, the sound carries over, you can’t expect people to cover their ears, can you?”
Lu Zhenguo: “…”
“Go back to the house first!” Lu Zhenguo said.
“I need to go to the entrance of the village to wait for the courier; the acceptance letter should arrive in these next few days.” Lu Youxi said.
“Sis, I’ll go with you,” Lu Youxue, who had returned with Lu Zhenguo and Liu Yushu, hurried to Lu Youxi’s side.
Lu Zhenguo took a deep breath, finding it now impossible to argue with Lu Youxi.
Lu Youxi shook off Lu Zhenguo’s arm and, taking Lu Youxue with her, walked away without even looking back at Lu Zhenguo.
Lu Youzhen hurried after them, curious to see what kind of college Lu Youxi would get into.
“Lu Youxi, you come back here!” Old Madam Lu shouted at the top of her lungs.
“Mom! Let’s talk inside about anything concerning us!” Lu Zhenguo quickly pulled Old Madam Lu into the house.
Old Master Lu, not wanting to be the joke of the neighborhood either, didn’t stop them.
After they finally entered the house, Old Madam Lu shook off Lu Zhenguo’s hand, “You’ve really turned against us now!”
“Zhenguo, do you really want to send that girl to college? Do you have the money?” Old Master Lu asked unhappily.
“If I don’t have the money, I’ll borrow it. There’s no reason why, if the child gets into college, I won’t let her attend. If other children can study, so can she,” Lu Zhenguo muttered.
“People have money, do you?” Old Madam Lu said angrily, “If you ask me, she should just marry someone. It’s a waste of money to go to college! What good will it do after she graduates? She’ll still be unaccomplished and still have to marry someone, college will have been for nothing! Since she’ll end up married anyway, better to do it now and save the cost of college!”
“Mom,” Liu Yushu gathered her courage to speak softly, “Youxi is a good student, always first in the school; she is sure to get into a good college.”
Liu Yushu harbored resentment.
Old Madam still had the nerve to ask Lu Zhenguo if he had money?
Wasn’t it because all the money was given to Youbang that they were short on funds?
Now, their own daughter wanted to go to college, but they supposedly didn’t have the money.
But she couldn’t point this out, even Lu Zhenguo would say that Youbang was part of the Lu Family, how could it be so clearly divided?
Liu Yushu lowered her head and muttered quietly, “Youbang got into Jing University, but he never got first place in school before.”
What do you think?
