Chapter 187 The Mastermind

Without waiting for a response, the hunchbacked man turned and left the plaza, his grotesque followers trailing behind him.

The stitched-face woman lingered for a moment. Her gaze flickered toward Feng Fan, a hint of hesitation in her hollow eyes. But in the end, she said nothing and followed the hunchbacked man into the thickening fog.

"Man, you're really something. I've never seen someone so fearless," a voice said behind Feng Fan, addressing him.

Feng Fan turned to see a long-haired blond man in tattered clothes. The man was absurdly handsome.

Normally, Feng Fan would feel a sense of aversion toward handsome men, but the familiar aura emanating from Mao Shun made it feel different.

There was no symbol of any sect on his outfit, which was unusual. Feng Fan couldn't tell if the man's clothes were torn where the sect symbol should be or if he didn't belong to any sect at all.

The handsome man carried a large hammer on his back. It looked like a blacksmith's hammer, but it was much bigger than usual.

Feng Fan's eyes narrowed as he studied the hammer. He could sense something special about it. The Suppression Relic hummed, confirming his suspicions.

"Who are you?" Feng Fan asked, his gaze sharp.

"Ah, where are my manners?" Mao Shun scratched the back of his neck, his face slightly flushed with embarrassment.

"Nice to meet you, my name is Mao Shun. And you are...?"

Feng Fan's eyes narrowed upon hearing his name. 'Mao? Could he be related to Mao Yuan?'

"Do you know Mao Yuan? The sect leader from the Heavenly Demon Sect in the Qian Empire?"

Mao Shun blinked in surprise at the sudden question but quickly shook his head. "I have no idea who that is."@@novelbin@@

Mao Yuan was actually Mao Shun's great-uncle, but since he had left the Mao Empire long before Mao Shun was born, the younger man was unaware of their family connection.

If Feng Fan had known Mao Yuan's ties to the Mao Empire, he could have asked the right questions, but as it was, Mao Shun's true identity remained undiscovered.

Hearing Mao Shun's thoughts and confirming they weren't related, Feng Fan's demeanor changed to a more warm one. Because the hammer and Mao Shun himself emanate a familiar energy, Feng Fan felt slightly closer to him than to a stranger.

Feng Fan smiled and cupped his hands in a polite greeting. "Never mind, I'm sorry, Brother Mao. My name is Feng Fan, it's a pleasure to meet you."

Mao Shun smiled and responded with a greeting of his own. "It's my pleasure. I'm really impressed by Brother Feng's courage. Even in this unknown and weird situation, you didn't seem fazed."

Feng Fan chuckled. 'Of course, if one can easily cheat, why would he be worried about the consequences.'

"Brother Mao, it's not that I'm fearless, but if we want to leave here, we must take the initiative. Those people can't be trusted, playing their game by their rules will only speed up our death."

Mao Shun nodded his head, his expression serious. Although his life in the royal family had been cut short, Mao Shun had been running all his life. The last thing he would do was trust unknown people easily.

Not to mention such shading-looking people, who kidnapped them and forced them to play some weird game.

"Brother Feng, we've only just met, but I feel a strange connection with you. Would you mind if I stick with you?" asked Mao Shun.

Mao Shun's instincts urged him to stay close to Feng Fan. This seemed to be his best chance of leaving the place in one piece.

His instincts had kept him alive for five months in the Death Plains. From a person with no cultivation, he had reached the peak of the Foundation Establishment realm—thanks to those instincts and the mysterious hammer on his back.

Feng Fan was surprised by Mao Shun's words and actions, but he quickly nodded with a smile.

"Then let's look around together. I think we should gather more information about this place before confronting the people who trapped us here."

Mao Shun nodded in agreement. "Yes, I think that's the best plan, Brother Feng."

After agreeing with Mao Shun, Feng Fan spoke to the girls. They decided to split into two groups to explore the area and then meet back at the plaza in at most four hours.

However, the girls started arguing over who would pair up with Feng Fan. To settle the dispute, Feng Fan decided to team up with Mao Shun, while Huang Xue, Su Xiaoli, and Xue Qiang would form the other group.

As Mao Shun and Feng Fan prepared to leave and investigate the village, Xue Qiang grabbed Feng Fan's arm.

"Be careful, Fanfan," she said, leaning in to give him a quick kiss on the lips.

Feng Fan smiled, enjoying the public display of affection. Su Xiaoli and Huang Xue didn't seem as pleased, though.

Huang Xue felt too shy to do something like that in front of so many people. Just the thought of it made her cheeks turn faintly red.

As for Su Xiaoli, her mind was still on her mother. She also worried that if she kissed Feng Fan in front of Xue Qiang, it might cause a fight—something she definitely wanted to avoid right now. Your journey continues on My Virtual Library Empire

In a room where no light dared to enter, ten red candles were arranged in a circle on the floor, their flickering flames the only source of illumination.

Beside the circle, the hunchbacked old man knelt, his body trembling as he muttered strange incantations in a low, guttural voice.

A shadow began to take form within the circle, hovering in mid-air.

"Master," the hunchbacked man, Dai Li, spoke, his voice quivering. "The new sacrifices have arrived, but there seems to be... a peculiar fellow among them."

The shadow grunted. "What does it matter? You cannot lose inside the domain I created. As long as he entered the village, there are only two possible outcomes: death, or servitude. You'd better not disappoint me, Dai Li."

Dai Li trembled even more at the words, his body shaking with fear. "Y-Yes, master. I will fulfill my duty without fail!"
