Nightmare Mythos

Chapter 198 Corpses Pretending Dead

"Not only are they alive Cesar. The thin corpses even though they came from the same body appear to already have a different mind each. So even though I knew what you'd need to do, still be very careful."

Cesar was completely frozen at his place just after hearing the piece of news coming from Cedeit who just had to give him a heart attack just right after he came back.

It was sudden news to hear about the thin corpses of the victims but it was something Cesar needed to hear since he wouldn't have been aware of it if not for the same entity.

But he quickly understood it was bad.

If the thin corpses that even Reyna, Quentin, Nike, or even the other squad that came to the city didn't notice isn't bad enough, then Cesar would be kidding himself if he wasn't able to understand the dangerous position he was in.

Those thinned corpses can be multiplied by ten, and Cesar was only able to count them because of everyone else here.

But if he had to fight them, that's a different matter to worry about.

'I would have to fight a hundred and forty thousand if I made some actions that indicate I'm aware of they are alive. Okay, Cesar. Focus. This is a great discovery… but wouldn't have been better if I didn't discover them? No, that's a wrong mindset. If I use Eyes of Deceit to look at the corpses even if accidentally, I'll be able to know they are alive one way or another…'

Cesar knew he had to thank Cedeit one way or another if he was able to escape the city alive and unscathed.

All he had to do now if he was planning on escaping alive was to feign ignorance.

That's it, and he knew it.

Cesar sighed as he tried to voice out something but his voice cracked.

"M-man, why the hell is my next mission taking so long? I really want to go so bad and finish this goddamn war as possible. To do that, I have to complete the task given to me… which didn't seem to appear happening soon. Come on… come on…! Give it to me!"

Feeling the eyes of some of those corpses looking at him, scrutinizing his movements, Cesar wanted to turn his head around to confirm his suspicions but the spookiness of the situation took over him and remained passive.

He didn't satiate his curiosity.

'Do I just wait for the mission to come any minute? Goodness… I've killed a lot of people to make this war as winnable as possible but this is the first time I've experienced something weird in this war. How are these corpses alive? Why is even that possible in the first place?' Read latest chapters at My Virtual Library Empire

Cesar's mind was filled with questions that the only thing he could do was think about this hard while walking towards his military car to prepare to leave any second once the communicator had given any orders.

Tak—!

Passing through the corpses that didn't seem to end no matter what, Cesar found his car and went inside to think deeply.

If he could only scream, Cesar would already have.

But he didn't want to incur suspicions of the corpses that were watching from the distance. At least not yet.

'I'll report this once I'm outside.'

Just as he was thinking that his actions were giving signals to the corpses, Cesar heard the communicator he placed at the front of his steering wheel turning static.

"Is this Cesar Sparrow?"

Cesar nodded his head.

"That's right,"

The communicator seemed to have deeply thought about what she was supposed to say before she continued.

"There are no current available missions given to you by the higher-ups at any moment so stay on guard at the city for a moment. Everything, I mean, everything was moving in the Army hence any possible or ongoing situation transpiring was being recorded and analyzed simultaneously.

"The only ones left here in the Army are the Internal Affairs that were doing all these tiring things so that you guys can just do your own things outside."

Cesar's face cracked since it only meant that he would waste another second in this wasteland where the corpses were pretending to be dead for whatever reason they had to be that way.

He couldn't do it.

Fighting that absurd amount of opponents is deemed impossible.

That's why he, who is reluctant to receive missions from the Internal Affairs of the Army because he could've been sent to his death bed, was good to be sent on anywhere else aside from Fender City.

"Are you sure there's no need for any attention? I-I can be anywhere! Send me to the seas or skies for goodness' sake! I'm happy to assist our side to victory no matter what,"

The lady from Internal Affairs that are merely speaking to the communicator seemed to be weirded out by his actions and uttered consciously.

"Are you crazy? You're not like this when receiving a mission from us,"

But the lady adjusted her tone as if she could understand where Cesar was coming from since their position was different.

Maybe something happened in the city where Cesar was currently staying that might've produced some trauma or something like that.

That's what the lady from the communicator was asking herself hence she began searching for any possible things she could do for Cesar if it meant that it was to relieve the current pain he was going through.

"Wait, I'm searching right now. Pleas standby,"

However, something was already going through Cesar's mind as he kept repeating the words that the lady from the other side seemed to utter accidentally.

'Am I crazy? If I told you that there are corpses here that are pretending to be dead, you'll also want to leave right away since you either have to fight them or ignore their existence. As for me who didn't want to fight any of those, I'll choose the latter. So please, for the love of my mother I don't know, picked a place already!'

Cesar wished deeply that the lady would find something on the other side.

And it seemed his wish was heard from the lady of luck herself as the lady from the communicator voiced out.

"Oh Cesar, the Egter City requires hard labor to rebuild the Mayor's manor as it was being used as a residence for the soldiers who were injured. Fret not, don't underestimate what simple labor could do to those people. They will greatly help—"

"I'm in!"

"…"

Cesar's heart pounded when a simple mission, something that he could get out of, appeared right in front of his eyes.

"I'm certainly in. How about I go in now? I will drive towards the Egter City right away and help those poor people to do labor,"

Cesar started his engine by jiggling his keys, twisting them from the hole before the vehicle began to move.

Cesar's traversed through the bumpy road of the Fender City while keeping his focus forward afraid that a corpse would suddenly spring up in the middle and block his way for being suspicious.

Thankfully, such a thing didn't happen.

Cesar was nearing its gate after seeing the map where Egter City after painstakingly searching through it which took a bit too long.

Finally, Cesar was already at the gate.

'Just a peek…'

Something that had been bugging him in the city was finally satiated to confirm his suspicions at the weird situation the moment he took a peek from the mount of corpses that had been gathered there.

And there, he saw a corpse with an eye that was merely looking upwards directed its attention towards him, the vehicle that was the only thing making noise from the city.

That wasn't the only corpse that looked at him.

The eyes of the corpses all looked at him leaving the city as if glad someone like him was finally out of their influence.

Cesar knew that he was.

Clang—!

Cesar drove away, his pace gradually increasing. He passed through quite a distance as the city from his side mirror was only little.

"Uh, hello. I'm still here you know,"

Cesar looked at the communicator and said, "Thanks for staying. I have something to tell you from my discovery at the Fender City,"

Cesar took a pause to contemplate the words before saying, "The corpses that we were tasked to count are pretending to be dead. Don't ask me why I know and… ask how it is possible to be in the first place. The corpses which had eyes on them looked at me while I was leaving. Put this on a priority list and immediately deliver such news to the higher ups,"

Cesar sighed, "They can see it for themselves. I don't care. But I warned you. Whatever or whoever is doing this had a motive. That's all,"

Cesar turned off the communicator after he had given his report before he made his way toward the Egter City.

The mission of laboring didn't seem hard on his ears.
