Odyssey Of Survival

Chapter 165 - 165 The Unleashing II

With reinforcements finally arriving from all corners, the tides of the battle began to shift, and the once-overwhelming swarm of Govarks began to thin. The relentless assault from Bella's team, combined with Madison's teleporting strikes and Ryder's brute force, carved through the monstrous horde with a growing efficiency that brought a flicker of hope back into the hearts of the weary fighters. Though the clash was brutal and casualties mounted with each passing second, the sight of more comrades joining the fray eased the crushing despair that had weighed on Alice's chest since the fight began.

And yet, despite the chaos—the ice-covered bodies of the fallen two-tailed Govarks, the cries of rage from her comrades, and the crimson stains painting the frozen battleground—Alice's attention remained fixed on a single figure. At the far edge of the conflict, standing tall and unnervingly composed amidst the carnage, was the three-tailed Govark. Its scaled, armored body loomed like a dark sentinel as it observed the battle unfold, utterly unmoved by the slaughter of its own kind. Not once had it intervened, not when its kin were blasted apart by Bella's ice storms, nor when Madison's arrows pinned them to the frozen earth, nor when Ryder cleaved through them with his brutal swings.

That unbothered, calculating gaze chilled Alice more than the storm she had summoned. The fact that the creature had remained still while its forces fell like insects under the group's combined might raised an uncomfortable truth—it didn't consider them worthy enough to act yet, or worse, it was studying them.

The memory of the Govark effortlessly dispelling her earlier barrage flashed in her mind like a warning. A single flick of its clawed hand had rendered her powerful ice arrows useless. How much stronger was this one compared to the others? No one knew, but the unspoken question weighed heavily on Alice's thoughts.

Sweat trickled down her brow despite the freezing temperatures as she made a tactical decision to withdraw from the immediate fight. She floated back through the storm, heart pounding, knowing she needed time—time to recover, time to think, time to draw on the full extent of her strength if they were to stand even the faintest chance against what was to come. If she didn't pull herself together, the next confrontation could be their last.

The battle stretched on, every second feeling like an eternity as the last of the two-tailed Govarks fell one by one. The ground was now littered with their monstrous bodies, half-buried beneath snow and ice. The sharp scent of blood mixed with the frigid wind as the remnants of Alice's earlier attack still lingered in the foggy air.

When the final two-tailed Govark let out a final guttural growl before collapsing into the ice, silence briefly fell upon the field, broken only by the distant howl of the wind. Ryder, standing near the front line, took a slow, steady breath and scanned the faces around him—wounded comrades, exhausted fighters, and far too many lying still in the snow. The loss was heavy, and it showed on every survivor's face.

Grinding his teeth together, Ryder murmured under his breath, voice almost carried away by the wind, "Jack… you better figure out that portal soon, or none of us are leaving this cursed island alive."

Madison, standing beside him, simply nodded, though her focus remained on Alice. She could sense it—the storm within her friend's soul that was about to be unleashed.

Then, the silence shattered.

The three-tailed Govark finally moved.

With slow, calculated steps, it advanced toward the center of the frozen battlefield. The sheer pressure radiating from its body weighed down on everyone present, and a wave of dread swept through the survivors as they instinctively stepped back. Its tails coiled and swayed like vipers behind it, each one thick and jagged, almost as if they were sentient weapons ready to strike at any moment.

Alice didn't hesitate. She strode forward, breaking through the tension-filled air with determination etched into every step. As the distance closed between her and the towering beast, she called out behind her, her voice clear yet laced with urgency, "Madison, get everyone back. As far as you can."

Madison's eyes widened. "Alice, wait—"

"Now," Alice cut her off without turning around, her tone leaving no room for argument.

Madison hesitated, but then relented. She trusted Alice. They all did. Without wasting another second, Madison began teleporting people further back, barking commands for them to reinforce their defensive formations.

And there, alone at the frontline, Alice stood before the three-tailed Govark as the first flakes of fresh snow began to drift from the blackened sky above. But this snowfall wasn't natural—it was the manifestation of the power she had kept buried deep within herself, power she barely understood but knew was dangerous.

Her mind flashed back to that icy world where she and Nate had encountered the old man. She knew a sharp bolt of energy had pierced into her mind like a needle. She hadn't understood it then, she thought it just increased her powers and gave her more control, but eventually she began to notice it was much more.

Now she knew—whatever that old man had embedded inside her, it was alive, dormant, and growing stronger with every passing day.

And now it was clawing at her from within.

As the snowstorm intensified, Alice's breath came out as thick clouds of white vapor. She could feel the dormant power scratching at the edges of her mind, begging to be unleashed. But fear gripped her heart—not fear of the Govark standing in front of her, but fear of herself. If she fully unlocked what the old man had placed inside her, would she still be Alice? Or would she become something else entirely?

The Govark tilted its head, staring at her, almost curious as it took another step forward.

The air dropped even further. The sky darkened. And somewhere deep within her soul, the old man's chilling voice whispered from the shadows.

"Let it loose."

Alice clenched her fists so tightly that her knuckles turned white.

"Let me out."

She trembled, knowing that the next choice she made could either save them all or doom them.

Without warning, the three-tailed Govark lunged forward, shattering the thin veil of stillness that had blanketed the battlefield. Its colossal body moved with terrifying speed, its clawed fist aimed directly for Alice's head before she even had the chance to summon the dormant power gnawing at the edges of her mind. Instinct kicked in as Alice's eyes widened, and she instantly raised an ice shield between herself and the beast's attack.

The Govark's fist collided with the barrier, but rather than holding firm as it always had against the two-tailed variants, her ice shield fractured on impact. A spiderweb of cracks spread like lightning bolts across the frozen surface, and then—without a hint of resistance—it shattered into a thousand frozen shards. The sound echoed through the battlefield like a warning bell.

Alice's breath caught in her throat. That… wasn't supposed to happen. She barely sidestepped the follow-up swing, narrowly evading the Govark's claws as they sliced through the air where she stood moments ago.

Seeing an opening as the creature's arm extended fully past her, Alice spun and gripped its wrist with both hands. The temperature around her dropped instantly as her freezing aura surged. Ice wrapped around the Govark's scaly arm like a serpent, rapidly engulfing it up to the elbow. Cracks echoed through the air as the frost thickened layer by layer, forming jagged spikes along its surface.

For a second, Alice allowed herself a flicker of hope. That should slow you down, she thought as the Govark's arm was encased completely.

But the Govark didn't react. Its predatory gaze remained empty, soulless, and utterly calm. Slowly, it raised its frozen arm in front of its face, studying it as if it were little more than a nuisance clinging to its body. Alice instinctively took a few cautious steps back, reading the subtle shift in its posture. Whatever it was about to do, she didn't want to be anywhere near it.

Without breaking eye contact with her, the Govark clenched its frozen fist.

The thick ice shattered in an instant, falling away like brittle glass as sharp shards rained down at its feet. Alice's heart skipped a beat.

Impossible… she whispered to herself. She knew the strength of her ice better than anyone. Even the toughest of the two-tailed Govarks had struggled to break free from her freezing techniques. This wasn't just resistance; this was total immunity.

The Govark's lips curled slightly, revealing sharp, jagged teeth, and before Alice could even process her next move, the creature lashed out. Its fist snapped forward, punching at seemingly empty space between them. The strike didn't come close to connecting with Alice directly—there was still a considerable distance between them—but the air itself shifted unnaturally, warping with the force of the blow.

Alice's instincts screamed at her. She threw herself sideways, diving out of the path of the unseen attack just as a violent shockwave tore through the space she had just vacated. The force struck the cave wall behind her, and the impact was immediate and devastating. The reinforced stone, protected by Ray's crystal formations, cracked under the immense pressure before collapsing entirely in a spray of rubble and dust.

Alice stared wide-eyed at the destruction. That wall… it was layered with Ray's strongest defensive crystals. How…?

Her gaze flicked back to the Govark, who stood there motionless, its arm returning to its side. That punch hadn't even been aimed directly at her. It was a demonstration, a warning of the power it had kept hidden beneath its passive demeanor all along.

The realization sank in quickly—this wasn't just a stronger Govark. This creature was beyond anything they had encountered before. It was capable of dishing out raw, concentrated force from a distance, with barely any effort just like Ryder but without the armour.

Alice swallowed hard as adrenaline coursed through her veins. The others, still retreating under Madison's orders, hadn't even noticed the extent of the devastation yet. If that thing decided to aim directly at them… there wouldn't be anything left.

The Govark slowly rotated its head, its eyes never blinking, never shifting from Alice. In the growing snowfall, the tension between them thickened, heavy as the storm clouds above. The sheer power radiating from the beast dwarfed even the worst two-tailed Govark she had faced earlier, and Alice could feel it pressing down on her like a tidal wave.

The dormant energy the old man had placed inside her stirred once more, louder this time, whispering temptations in the back of her mind.

"You cannot win without me."

Her fingers trembled at her sides.

"Let me take over…"

Alice clenched her jaw tightly as she tried to push the voice down, but even as she steeled herself, the Govark flexed its claws and calmly began to advance again. Step by step, each movement made the ground beneath its feet groan as if the earth itself were reluctant to hold its weight.

Alice's time was running out.
