Chapter 166 - 166 The Unleashing III
Alice stood frozen in place, eyes narrowing as she exhaled a shaky breath. Deep inside, she felt the swirling storm of power, She knew she could no longer hold back, no more second guesses, no more delays.
This is it, she thought grimly.
With a slow, deliberate breath, Alice closed her eyes.
For a fleeting second, the battlefield became eerily still. The winds that had been carrying the falling snow stopped completely, and every breath anyone dared to take turned to steam in the frigid air. The Govark before her cocked its head slightly, sensing the shift but remaining poised, watching her closely.
Then, without warning, Alice's eyes snapped open.
A pulse of chilling silence rippled across the entire island—no wind, no sound, just a dense, suffocating stillness that pressed against everyone like a vice. The Govark, the humans, even the far-off beasts lurking in the dark corners of the island seemed to freeze for a heartbeat.
And then it began.
Ice erupted from Alice's body, cascading outward like blooming flowers, encasing her frame in a crystalline armor that shimmered in the dim light. The armor hugged her figure like it had been crafted by ancient gods, elegant yet impossibly strong, and every inch of it pulsed with the very essence of winter. Sharp, intricate patterns ran along her arms and chest, catching the faint glimmers of light, casting faint blue reflections onto the snow-covered ground.
A longsword of pure ice, glowing faintly at the edges, materialized in her right hand. Its blade seemed to hum softly, vibrating with untamed energy, as though it had been waiting for centuries to be wielded.
The people behind her could only stare. Even those who had fought beside Alice countless times had never seen her like this.
Bella's voice broke the silence as she stepped up behind Madison. "Is this… the power you were always talking about?"
Madison didn't answer immediately. She stared at Alice, a tight knot forming in her stomach. The power was beautiful, mesmerizing even, but there was something darker, something unsettling hidden beneath it all. Slowly, she shook her head, eyes filled with worry. "She told us once... if she ever let it loose, she didn't know what would happen to her."
Bella's gaze shifted back to Alice, her usual playfulness gone, replaced by pure awe. No one dared to interrupt the sight before them.
Then, Alice moved.
In the blink of an eye, her feet touched the ground and vanished again, closing the distance between her and the three-tailed Govark with frightening speed. Even the Govark's eyes widened slightly, impressed, though the amused grin returned to its face as it effortlessly sidestepped the diagonal slash of Alice's sword.
The icy blade cleaved through the air, cutting cleanly into the earth beneath where the Govark had just been standing, leaving a deep scar in the terrain. The Govark's movement was fluid, precise, as it dodged, but its amusement was genuine. It hadn't expected such power to exist on this battlefield, but now, it found itself interested.
Before Alice could follow up, one of the Govark's tails lashed out toward her with the force of a whip. Reflexively, she raised her sword, catching the tail mid-swing. The blow pushed her back, skidding across the frozen ground as ice cracked under her feet.
The Govark let out a strange guttural sound—something between a growl and a chuckle—as it clenched its fist and punched the air again. The ripple of compressed energy raced toward Alice, distorting the atmosphere in its wake.
Alice gritted her teeth and braced herself, but the invisible force slammed into her chest, sending her sliding backward once more. Thankfully, her newly formed armor dulled the brunt of the impact, preventing serious injury.
As she steadied herself, regaining her footing, she raised her hand.
In an instant, massive ice pillars erupted from the earth around her, circling her like sentinels. With a single, subtle flick of her fingers, the pillars surged forward, cutting through the air toward the Govark.
The beast responded without hesitation, pivoting sharply as it kicked the first pillar, shattering it into a cloud of frozen shards. The second followed swiftly behind, but it too met the same fate—crushed under the raw strength of the Govark's strike.
But the third pillar struck true.
With a booming crash, it slammed into the Govark's side, catching it off-guard and flinging its massive body into the air. Its claws scrambled mid-flight, struggling to reorient itself, its vision briefly obscured by the shards of the shattered pillar.
When its yellow eyes snapped open midair, Alice was already upon it.
She appeared like a phantom in the sky, sword raised high above her head. Her blade, gleaming with a chilling light, sliced downward in a deadly arc, poised to cleave the beast in two.
The Govark's eyes finally lost their amusement.
Alice's sword crashed down against the Govark's chest, a deafening clang echoing across the battlefield. The air trembled under the weight of the strike, frost flaring outward like a shockwave as the Govark's body was hurled toward the ground. It smashed into the earth with a devastating impact, sending tremors that rocked the entire island. The ground cracked and split under the beast's weight, forming a massive crater as debris and dust shot upward, obscuring the view of anyone watching.
For a moment, everything held still. The only sound was the sharp ringing in everyone's ears and the gentle hiss of the settling dust.
Madison stood frozen, clutching her bow tightly, heart pounding as she stared into the thick cloud of dirt. "Did she get it?" she whispered, eyes flicking between the dust cloud and Alice who still hovered midair like a goddess of winter.
People behind Madison murmured, hopeful but hesitant. "Maybe she killed it?" one of them asked under their breath.
But then, the silence was shattered.
A shadow surged from within the crater, leaping upward with alarming speed. The dust cleared in an instant, revealing the towering figure of the three-tailed Govark, landing gracefully on the edge of the battlefield. The only visible mark on its body was a faint, thin line of blood that stretched diagonally across its broad chest. The wound barely reached beneath the skin, yet everyone's eyes were locked on it in disbelief.
Then, before anyone could even process what they were seeing, the wound sealed shut in mere seconds. The Govark's tough skin regenerated, closing the gash as if it had never been there.
Madison's jaw dropped open in pure shock, unable to stop herself. "No way… That's impossible," she mumbled. The others around her were equally stunned, expressions twisted in confusion and fear. "She's using her full power. That hit should've split him in half!" Madison's voice cracked as she gripped her weapon tighter, anxiety coursing through her veins.
Alice landed back on the ground, eyes narrowing. But something about her demeanor shifted. The radiant blue glow in her eyes dimmed slightly, and her face took on a calm, yet unsettling look. Whatever force inside her—the dormant power gifted by the old man—was gradually asserting itself, influencing her actions.
Alice tilted her head slowly, eyes locked onto the Govark as if studying it with curiosity rather than concern. Then, a subtle, amused smirk curled on her lips.
From behind her icy armor, the voice that escaped her lips sounded slightly distorted, otherworldly.
"So, you're stronger than I thought," she whispered, though her voice echoed unnaturally, sending chills down Madison's spine. Then, more forcefully, her voice rang out like a command, laced with eerie power: "But die now."
Alice's feet lifted off the ground as she rose into the air, sword in hand, her icy armor glowing brighter with each passing second. Frost spread outward from where she floated, freezing the battlefield beneath her feet. Massive chunks of ice jutted from the earth in jagged formations, and snow swirled around her like a cyclone.
The Govark's three tails swayed behind it, eyes flickering with excitement for the first time. It licked its fangs with a long, dark tongue as if savoring the moment. There was no fear in its expression, only anticipation. Its claws flexed eagerly.
Then Alice let out a ghastly sound, a twisted mix of a scream and a roar that vibrated through the bones of everyone present. It was the kind of sound that didn't belong to a human, but to something far more ancient and terrifying.
"Die now!" she repeated, voice carrying across the battlefield like a frozen storm as she pointed her sword straight at the Govark, directing every ounce of her deadly intent toward it.
With a wild grin, the Govark lunged forward, leaping into the air with incredible force. It moved like a blur, claws slashing through the snowfall as it aimed straight for Alice, excitement flaring in its yellow eyes. It was eager, almost exhilarated by the challenge standing before it.
Alice and the Govark hurtled toward one another, both poised to strike midair. The tension thickened as the two forces—one wielding ancient ice and the other sheer brute power—raced toward collision.
The ground below them quaked, as if the island itself knew that this was just the beginning.
What do you think?
