Odyssey Of Survival

Chapter 167 - 167 Defeated

The island itself trembled beneath their feet.

As Alice's blade met the Govark's incoming claws, a blinding burst of energy exploded outward, shaking the land to its very core. Trees snapped like twigs in the distance, and the very air seemed to ripple as their collision sent shockwaves cascading through the atmosphere. The earth split beneath them, chunks of stone and frozen soil flung into the sky, only to be devoured by the swirling blizzard surrounding Alice's body.

The two combatants separated as quickly as they had clashed, both retreating backward, landing gracefully, yet visibly strained.

All eyes were drawn to the Govark first. A collective gasp escaped from the onlookers as they spotted it—right through the beast's stomach, just above its abdomen, there was now a large hole. Steam rose from the wound as blood, dark and thick like tar, poured out in waves, staining the cracked battlefield below. But that wasn't what shocked them most—it was the fact that the wound was already closing, fibers of muscle knitting back together, bones snapping back into place as if time itself was reversing the damage.

Still, the fact that Alice had managed to do this much in a single blow was something nobody could ignore.

"She actually… hurt it," Ryder murmured from behind the line, eyes wide with disbelief.

Others nodded in silent agreement, but while many clenched their fists in hope, Madison's face darkened, her stomach twisting into knots.

"No…" she whispered, gripping Bella's arm. "This isn't right."

Bella turned to her, confused. "What? Isn't this what we were waiting for?"

Madison's gaze remained locked on Alice. "Look at her... She's losing herself." And sure enough, Alice's eyes had changed. The soft, icy blue that usually colored them was now replaced by something darker—something ancient and cold. It wasn't entirely Alice anymore. The air around her felt oppressive, too heavy for anyone nearby.

Madison clenched her jaw. "The more she fights… the more that thing inside her takes over."

Meanwhile, across the field, the Govark finally stopped holding its wound, its breathing heavy but steady. Its beastly eyes narrowed at Alice as a realization sank in: charging her directly was no longer an option.

A low growl rumbled from its throat as it shifted tactics.

Without warning, the Govark began punching and kicking the air. But these weren't random swipes—each movement distorted the space around its limbs. Invisible shockwaves, almost like blades of compressed air, were launched at Alice, tearing through the battlefield with alarming speed, slicing rocks and frozen structures apart.

Alice didn't flinch. Instead, she grinned—a sharp, unnerving grin. Her voice echoed out, soft yet eerie, like a wind carrying the whispers of spirits. "You'll have to do better than that…"

Then, with a burst of speed, she vanished.

One blink later, she reappeared directly in front of the Govark, seemingly materializing out of thin air. Without giving it a moment to react, she slammed her fist—imbued with crushing icy force—into its chest. A thunderous crack rang out as its ribcage visibly caved in, the bones fracturing under the sheer might of her blow. The Govark's massive frame was lifted off the ground and flung backward, spiraling like a ragdoll.

It crashed several meters away, digging a deep trench through the icy terrain before slamming into a boulder, shattering it completely.

Silence fell over the battlefield for a few heartbeats.

Then the beast moved.

The Govark slowly pushed itself off the ground, one clawed hand gripping its chest. But instead of wincing or growling in pain, it let out a twisted, guttural noise. A laugh. A monstrous, unsettling laugh that sounded both human and animal at once.

Then, in a raspy, hoarse voice that carried across the entire island, it spoke words no one expected.

"That… is more like it."

The beast grinned, flashing its jagged fangs. Without hesitation, it raised its massive hand skyward.

Instantly, the heavens responded.

The sky darkened as if the sun itself had been swallowed. Thick, roiling green clouds churned above them, spreading rapidly across the island, casting an unnatural green hue over everything. It was as if the world had been dipped in poison.

Madison and Bella instinctively stepped closer together, their eyes scanning the eerie sky.

"What… the hell is that?" Bella muttered, trying to steady her breathing as the green clouds continued to thicken.

"I don't know," Madison replied, voice low, eyes filled with unease. "But this… this isn't normal."

The light dimmed to a sickly green shade, covering the island in a heavy gloom. Even the snow falling from above looked tainted, taking on the color of the storm overhead. The temperature dropped even further, but it wasn't Alice's ice this time—it was the aura of the Govark itself, something sinister and primal.

Alice hovered midair, unaffected by the growing darkness, though the flickering shadows cast over her armor made her look even less human. She tilted her head slightly as if analyzing the transformation.

Then the Govark's body began to change.

Its glowing green veins bulged, pulsating under its skin. The creature's muscles swelled, growing denser and larger by the second. In mere moments, its towering form expanded beyond its original size, forcing everyone on the ground to crane their necks just to see its head. Its claws sharpened, tails extending and thickening like monstrous whips. Its glowing eyes were now blazing orbs of emerald fire.

The beast had entered a new phase of power.

The ground beneath it cracked and melted slightly under its weight as the beast let out another guttural roar, shaking the very clouds above.

Madison's hands trembled. "We've never seen anything like this before…"

Alice's gaze narrowed as the massive Govark charged toward her with terrifying speed, each of its heavy footsteps shaking the already fragile ground beneath them. A smug grin crept across her face, even as the storm raged overhead.

"You made a mistake," Alice whispered to herself, eyes flashing. "Getting bigger… just makes you easier to hit."

Without wasting another second, her figure blurred and vanished, a sharp gust of icy wind left swirling in her wake.

In a flash, she reappeared directly in front of the giant beast. Her presence barely registered in its monstrous, glowing eyes before she twisted her body, delivering a full-powered kick aimed straight at its chest. The impact was swift and precise—but just as her heel was about to crash into its core, a translucent green barrier suddenly erupted around the Govark's massive frame.

The moment her leg met the shield, the energy rebounded violently.

A shockwave rippled out, sending Alice flying backward, her body tumbling through the air before she crashed into the ground, skidding through snow and shattered stone. She winced as she coughed up a mouthful of blood, the red liquid staining the snow beneath her.

For a second, everything went still.

But Alice rose slowly, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. Her face twisted into a cold glare. Behind her, the air shifted, howling as a raging ice storm materialized from nowhere, swirling violently, snow and shards of frozen air whipping around her like a blizzard from the abyss.

With a powerful push, the storm lifted her into the air and carried her forward like a missile.

The Govark raised its clawed hand, ready to intercept her, but it was too late.

As Alice surged forward, she thrust her palm out, commanding the ice storm to follow her lead. It responded viciously, crashing forward in tandem with her attack. The snowstorm transformed into towering waves of ice and frost, barreling into the Govark's shield with relentless force.

The green barrier appeared again around the beast, but this time, it groaned under the overwhelming pressure.

Cracks spiderwebbed across the surface of the shield as Alice pressed forward, her hand glowing brighter, her breath forming into chilling vapor. The ground trembled as the frozen surge intensified, the howling storm roaring like a beast itself.

Then the barrier shattered.

With a sharp crack, the Govark's shield burst apart, shards of green energy scattering into the storm as the beast was momentarily exposed.

The ice storm, now freed from its restraint, surged forward in a final devastating wave.

At the heart of it, hidden from view, Alice willed a towering mass of frozen earth and glacial ice—an entire mountain's worth—into existence. The Govark barely had time to register the threat before the colossal mound slammed into its chest, lifting its massive body clean off the ground.

The beast was hurled backward, soaring nearly a hundred meters before crashing into the battlefield like a meteor. The ground split open as it collided with the earth, leaving behind a trail of destruction. Ice and debris erupted into the air, masking the scene in white mist and rubble.

For a heartbeat, the battlefield was silent.

Then the Govark stirred.

With a guttural snarl, it slowly rose to its feet, blood now pouring freely from multiple wounds carved deep into its flesh. Gashes stretched across its arms, legs, and torso, painting the monster in dark streaks of crimson. Its chest heaved, each breath sounding more like a growl than anything human.

But it wasn't defeated.

It was furious.

The Govark's massive hand shot skyward, fingers splayed as it roared into the heavens. The green clouds above responded instantly, swirling faster as if alive. In the next instant, the entire storm condensed, pulling itself together into a massive sphere of dark green energy.

Bella's eyes widened as she grabbed Madison's sleeve. "Maddy… what is that?"

Madison's heart pounded. "Something bad."

With an ear-splitting crackle, the condensed storm released its fury.

A beam of solidified green lightning, thick as a tower, plummeted from the sky like the judgment of the gods, aimed directly at Alice. Acting purely on instinct, Alice raised both arms as dozens of ice barriers snapped into place in front of her. They layered over each other, thick walls of frost and steel-hard ice, but they shattered instantly as the green beam tore through them like paper.

The energy struck her squarely.

The explosion was massive, leveling the surrounding terrain. The earth cratered beneath the force, a circular pit gouged deep into the landscape. When the dust finally began to settle, there was nothing but silence.

Alice lay within the crater, staring dazed at the tainted green sky above her. Her body felt heavy, her armor cracked and splintered. Her breathing slowed as a wave of exhaustion washed over her.

She tried to lift her head but couldn't. Her mind reeled. I… didn't expect it to be this strong...

For the first time since unleashing her powers, she felt powerless.

Then, as the shadows lengthened over her battered form, Alice's half-lidded eyes caught sight of the Govark. It stood towering above the crater, its colossal body looming like a mountain. Its lips curled back in a twisted grin as it leapt into the air.

Alice's eyes widened in horror.

The beast was coming straight for her—fast.

Her vision began to blur, and in the final moment before darkness swallowed her sight, she saw only one thing: the massive frame of the Govark, descending upon her like an executioner's axe.
