Odyssey Of Survival

Chapter 168 - 168 The End?

The earth quaked violently as the Govark's enormous body crashed down in the middle of the crater, a deafening boom ripping through the island like a sonic wave. Dust and debris shot skyward, blotting out the weak daylight as cracks split across the land. The sheer impact shook everyone to their core.

From where they stood on the outskirts of the battlefield, the group's collective gasp filled the air. Their wide, horrified eyes watched as the monstrous beast landed precisely where Alice lay, the crater swallowing both her and the Govark's mountainous bulk.

"No!" Bella screamed, falling to her knees, arms stretched hopelessly toward the destruction before her. The raw helplessness on her face mirrored everyone else's. There was no way anyone could survive being crushed under something that size.

A sharp chill swept through the air.

Out of nowhere, Madison reappeared beside Bella, her face pale but determined, clutching Alice tightly in her arms. Alice's body was limp, her once radiant icy armor now cracked and flickering faintly as if it were about to disappear completely.

Bella's eyes widened in disbelief before tears streamed down her face. She scrambled to her feet and quickly took Alice from Madison's arms, cradling her gently. "Maddy… you… you saved her!" Bella cried in relief, pressing Alice close as her chest heaved.

Madison exhaled sharply, sweat dripping from her forehead. "Barely," she muttered. "If I was even a second slower, we'd both be—" She glanced back at the crater, her words trailing off.

The dust slowly settled, revealing the immense crater where the Govark had landed. The beast pulled itself upright, staring at the empty space where Alice had been just seconds ago. Its glowing eyes narrowed as it let out a low, guttural growl.

Its claws tore at the cracked earth, frustrated.

Madison's mind raced as she glanced at Alice, who was barely breathing. She gave everything she had… and now this monster's still standing.

But before anyone could react further, a sudden rustling noise echoed from the treeline beyond the battlefield.

The bushes parted.

And out stepped another Govark.

This one was just as menacing, if not more. Its green skin was darker, and its three tails swayed lazily behind it as it walked casually onto the clearing. Unlike the battle-scarred and bleeding Govark they had been fighting, this new arrival was unscathed, its expression unreadable as its emotionless eyes swept across the group.

A collective gasp erupted as the survivors instinctively took several steps back.

Madison's heart dropped into her stomach as she whispered in disbelief, "My world… there's two now."

The grim reality sank into every soul present.

The first Govark—the one Alice had nearly killed—suddenly leaped out of the crater, its wounds still fresh, blood oozing heavily from its chest and limbs. Yet despite the damage, the monster's stance remained solid. Its eyes burned with renewed rage, but its breathing was steady. The wounds weren't slowing it down at all.

Now, with two three-tailed Govarks standing before them, the group realized the hopelessness of their situation.

Without Alice standing to protect them, they wouldn't last a second. The weight of that realization was suffocating.

Fear gripped them like ice.

Amara clenched her fists, her flames flickering weakly around her. "Even one was too much."

Everyone could feel it: despair creeping in.

Then, without warning, a crackle filled the air behind them. A swirling portal tore open in the middle of the battlefield, a blinding blue light illuminating the shadows. The group spun around, panic rising in their throats, expecting another monstrous Govark to step through.

Their hands tightened around their weapons, ready for whatever horror was coming.

But then they heard an excited shout.

"I finally did it!" Jack's voice rang out from the other side of the portal as he and his squad emerged. His face lit up with triumph as he held up a strange device, glowing faintly in his hand. "We can go home now!"

He flicked a switch, and the portal closed behind him.

But the second Jack took in the sight before him, his grin faltered.

The boy's eyes widened as he stared past Madison and the others—right at the towering figures ahead. His heart skipped a beat as he registered the two Govarks standing side by side, one still bleeding heavily and the other staring as if the entire fight bored it.

Jack's voice caught in his throat. "W-What the hell…"

The others turned back toward the battlefield, dread sinking deeper.

The wounded Govark stood tall, blood still dripping freely from its body, yet showing no signs of fatigue. The second Govark's eyes swept over the humans like they were nothing but ants, its calm expression terrifying in its own way.

Ray's staff trembled in his grip. "This is… this is impossible."

Nobody dared make a sound. Nobody moved.

As the two monsters loomed over them, the island seemed to fall deathly still, as though nature itself was holding its breath.

And for the thousandth time since arriving on this cursed island, the group truly realized—they might not make it out alive.

Just when it felt like things couldn't possibly get any worse, a sharp gasp echoed behind the group.

Everyone spun around to see Claire pressing a blade directly against Jack's neck, her grip unshakable and cold.

"Drop the device," she said calmly, her voice like ice. "And the crystal… or I'll slit your head clean off."

Jack froze, wide-eyed, feeling the cold steel against his skin.

Madison's heart nearly stopped. "Claire?!" she shouted. "What the fuck are you doing?"

The words barely left Madison's mouth before realization washed over her like a storm. Ryder stood beside her, frozen with disbelief, but a dark memory returned to him—Ray's quiet warning from days ago. Ray had mentioned suspicions about Claire working for Zoro, but no one wanted to believe it.

Not until now.

Beside Claire stood a small squad of rough-looking figures, all wearing sly grins, and among them was Axel and almost everybody that tried to fight Nate when Claire accused him of trying to rape her, arms crossed, a satisfied smirk plastered on his face.

Claire had always been working with Zoro.

Everything Nate had said—the accusation, the set-up—it was the truth. The scene with Claire's torn clothes, her screams… it was all part of a bigger lie. They had cast Nate out, abandoned him, because of her.

The people's gut twisted as shame and anger warred inside her. Ryder clenched his fists, staring at Claire like he'd never known her.

Even Amara was shaking, her lips quivering. "Claire… you were my best friend…" she whispered, her voice breaking.

But Claire ignored her, tightening her grip on Jack as her blade pressed deeper against his neck. "Nobody move," Claire ordered, her voice sharp like broken glass. "Or I'll kill the brat."

Jack trembled, lowering the device and the glowing crystal from his hands. With a smug smile, Axel stepped forward and casually picked them up.

"Thanks, kid," Axel sneered. "You just saved us a lot of trouble."

The betrayal settled into the air like poison. The entire team stood frozen, disbelief and fury flashing in their eyes, but no one dared make a move—not with Jack's life hanging by a thread.

Claire's expression was calm but cold, as if she were just doing business.

As Axel pocketed the crystal and the device, Claire wrapped an arm around Jack's neck, holding him tightly while backing toward the two towering Govarks. Her goons followed close behind, keeping their weapons ready.

The second Govark—the uninjured one—watched the scene unfold, its glowing eyes betraying no emotion.

For a long, suffocating second, no one could speak.

Then Ray did something unexpected.

He laughed.

A dry, bitter laugh spilled from him as he sat down heavily on the cold ground, as if the entire weight of this twisted reality had finally become too absurd to bear.

"Ray?!" Madison shouted. "What's wrong with you?!"

Ray simply shook his head and stared at the dirt beneath him, still chuckling quietly. "I was right," he muttered under his breath. "No one believed me… but I was right. She's been with Zoro all along." His voice was hollow, yet oddly satisfied.

The group stared at him, speechless.

Then Claire smirked and turned toward the Govarks. "You can kill them now," she said coldly, waving a dismissive hand at her former teammates. "We have what we came for."

The injured Govark, still dripping with blood from the earlier battle, licked its sharp teeth as it grinned. Its tails twitched in anticipation as it let out a low growl, its mouth stretching unnaturally wide.

Without hesitation, it leapt high into the air, blood trailing behind it like a macabre ribbon. Its claws glinted as it zeroed in on Madison and the others.

Madison's instincts screamed to act, but she knew it in her heart—there was no way she could save everyone from what was coming next. Not even with her teleportation powers. The Govark's speed and power were too overwhelming.

Everyone could only watch in horror as the monstrous creature came crashing down toward them, ready to wipe them all from existence.

Madison's mind raced.

No… Not like this.

And yet… it was happening.
