Chapter 223 Roasting
A developed habit!
He had repeated such actions a multitude of times that his body unconsciously, as naturally as breathing.
By the time Lucian arrived at his makeshift kitchen, the rabbit had ceased its struggle. It was still alive. But it had no fight left in it.
Breathing raggedly, the rabbit closed its eyes, knowing its end was before it.
Now that it no longer struggled, Lucian switched his hold on it, grabbing it only by its hind legs. He then brought the flat side of his knife down, hitting the rabbit behind its ears. In an instant, the rabbit, still breathing moments ago, went limp.
After placing the rabbit down on a chopping board, Lucian turned to Luke and said, "Okay, you can give me the other rabbit."
Luke went over to Lucian and handed him the rabbit, who swiftly ended its life.
"With that done, do either of you know how to make wooden skewers?" Lucian asked them.
"I do," Lucius said. "I usually cook our food."
Lucian nodded.
"Good, as I skin and gut the rabbits, make the skewers. Oh, and if you know how to, make a wooden camping tripod."
As Lucian had done previously, he quickly processed the rabbits.
But even quicker than him was Lucius, who had long since found four tree branches and sharpened their edges. Moreover, he truly backed up what he said about usually cooking for them. A makeshift tripod made from tree branches stood over the campfire, perfectly positioned at just the right distance from the flames. Close enough to roast the meat evenly, but not so near that it risked charring.
"That was quick." Lucian was genuinely impressed by the setup. Even he could not have done much better.
Lucius smiled.
"You learn a trick or two when you're out in the wilds for long periods."
After nodding his head, Lucian took out four labeled bottles filled with different seasonings — salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and red chili powder. The four seasonings were all that the Lucian of this world kept in his Spatial Ring.
It was unfortunate, but Lucian did not mind. He still had an act to play. Showing off his culinary skills might just get him burnt.
As Lucian opened the bottles, the aroma of spices released, mixing with the earthy scent of the forest and the metallic tang of blood from the rabbits.
Lucian then summoned a large bowl and added a strict portion of seasonings into it.
Once the ratio of seasoning suited Lucian, he began rubbing the seasoning mix into each rabbit's meat.
As Lucian massaged the seasonings into the meat, he was hoping the brothers would continue to wait before striking him.
Luke was his insurance. He had openly expressed his hunger, so it was almost guaranteed they would wait until the rabbits were roasted.
But that did not mean Lucius was not key to his success. Compared to his brother, Lucius was more cautious, and that might bite him in the butt.
A minute or so later, once Lucian was done rubbing the rabbits with the seasoning, he skewered them with the skewers Lucius had created. He then placed them on the cooking tripod to slowly roast.
The flames licked at the meat, and soon, their fat began melting, dripping on the hot logs of wood with rhythmic, satisfying sizzles.
"Once the meat is done roasting, I promise you three, you'll forget we're even in the wild," Lucian said as he washed his hands.
Luke gulped, liking the sound of his words and the smell in the air.
Lucius smiled.
"I hope Alchemist Drake's meat will live up to his words."
Lucian trembled.
'Oi, what's with that innuendo?'
On the other hand, Pei Buhan remained vigilant of the brothers. He still did not trust the brothers and had considered leaving multiple times.
Meanwhile, Lucian slowly turned the skewers to allow each side to cook evenly.
Beads of sweat rolled down his face due to the fierce heat and exhaustion.
What he was doing seemed simple at first glance, but it was taking all of his attention to do.
The wind was especially fierce tonight, causing the flames produced by the campfire to be sporadic. At times, when the wind blew, the flames would rise higher than expected. When that happened, Lucian was forced to swiftly raise the skewers up. Then, as the fire died down, he would lower them back into position.
As time ticked by, the rich aroma of roasting meat began to intensify, filling the small campsite with a mouthwatering aroma that was impossible to ignore.
Even Pei Buhan could not help but inch closer to the roasting meats.
Unknown to the group of four, it was not only Pei Buhan drawn in by the tantalizing aroma.
Under the shadows cast by the tall trees, glowing orbs filled with hunger stared in the direction of the smell.
Following their noses, they inched closer.
Sometime, later, as Lucian continued to rotate the meat, the rustle of leaves snapped his attention to the right.
"We have company," Lucian said as he looked at the figure of a fox behind a tree.
Realizing it had been spotted, the fox no longer hid its attention and darted for the roasting meat.
*Xiu*
The fox was fast, but even quicker was an arc of light cleanly passing through the fox's neck.
The entire process was fast and came with no warning signs. By the time the fox's head separated from its body Lucian had only blinked once after speaking.
"Alchemist Drake, leave these animals to us, brothers. We can't have our food ruined." Lucius said while brandishing a heavy sword with both hands.
Luke, unconsciously nodded with drool escaping his lips.
Seeing this, Lucian nodded his head and continued turning the skewers. The aroma was almost at its peak.@@novelbin@@
"Finish them off quickly, the meats are almost done roasting."
"If that's the case, then, we'll have to hurry."
"Be quick, elder brother."
Then, the two brothers split up and rushed into the forest.
'It's good that I have two fools willing to take care of them.' Lucian chuckled.
What do you think?
