Chapter 226 The Inevitable Return
"Twelve times." An Elder muttered tiredly.
"Exactly." Elder Chen nodded. "And each time, it's the same story. Every single morning, he rushes to the old man. Even worse, that old man is getting bolder and braver. He's working the brat like a servant."
"If only the old man weren't so strong." The previous elder said what everyone in the grand hall was thinking.
They had once secretly attacked the old man, in hopes of making him disappear quietly from Chaos Haven World. But who would have thought he was a hidden expert?
The old man's Mage Rank was still a mystery to them. That was how powerful he was.
It was fortunate the old man had shown leniency, allowing the Elders who had attacked him to live, and, even more so, allowed their Sect to continue existing.
If it had been anyone else in the old man's shoes, their Sect would have long since disappeared into the annals of history.
Elder Chen continued, "The boy needs discipline, not freedom. If he continues down this path, we'll lose our golden goose."
"Locking him away will only breed resentment, Elder Chen." An Elder with a tall, white beard said calmly.
Tang Hong nodded in agreement.
"Elder Jiao is correct. We must find a different way to persuade him to return to the Sect. On that note, I'm sure this time around, once he fails to obtain the Phosphorus Glow Berries, he'll come running back to the Sect. After all, the old chef had said if Lucian wanted to be his disciple, he would have to complete all of his tests. One failure is all we need."
Elder Chen's eyes lit up at the mention of Lucian's potential failure.
"Is that why Sect Master called us here?"
Tang Hong shook his head with a wide smile.
"Not exactly, Elder Chen. Let me explain. I received a report that Lucian was spotted entering Qingyun City six hours ago. After entering the city, he headed straight to the Adventurer's Guild and accepted a quest to exterminate a bandit gang that goes by the name, Ember Lion Pride. They're weak and would have been easily dispatched by Lucian, but in his current state, it's impossible for him to kill them."
Elder Chen was startled.
"What is that brat doing going after bandits? Shouldn't he be trying to climb Tianshan Mountain?"
Simultaneously, an elder said worriedly, "In Lucian's current state, he'll be slaughtered by the bandits. We have to hurry and save him."
But before he even stood up, relief washed over him, when he heard the Sect Master's voice:
"Elder Bai, did you forget Lucian is protected by the Sect Protecting Artifact?"
"Oh… I did… haha." He awkwardly laughed and took his seat.
"But what is he doing going after bandits?" Elder Chen repeated with a frown.
"Could the boy have finally come to his senses and given up on his foolishness to become a chef?" Elder Wu, a tall man with beady eyes and a snake tail, voiced his thoughts out loud.
Instantly, hope-filled gazes turned to the Sect Master, who remained silent for a few seconds.
"I'm afraid not. The boy is stubborn. I don't know what he's thinking, but knowing him, it must have something to do with the Phosphorus Glow Berries. Most likely, he must have heard the bandits had robbed them from a merchant, and now, he set off to retrieve them."
The Elders' expressions changed. It was not the answer they had been hoping for, but even they knew that they had been merely wishfully hoping.
"But will the old chef accept Phosphorus Glow Berries that Lucian didn't harvest himself?" Elder Chen asked curiously. "And if Lucian wanted, he could have bought the berries from the Illusory Butterfly Sect. They are merely Grade 1 berries. Why go through so much trouble?"@@novelbin@@
"Of course, the old chef won't accept them. That's exactly why I called you all so late at night. To give you this small gift. Unlike everyone in this room, no one else knows about the old chef's Mage Rank. Lucian probably thinks he can deceive him. But what he doesn't know is that Phosphorus Glow Berries, after they are harvested, rapidly lose their flavor, potency, and color. The old chef will know instantly if the berries were not freshly picked by Lucian."
Upon hearing this, the Elders burst into celebration.
"Haha. The boy is still too naive!"
"It's better this way! We can finally see him abandon this chef nonsense once and for all!"
"Finally, the Sect's greatest talent is about to return!"
"That was all I had to report. You can all leave now. Once I receive more information, I'll call for you all again."
After saying so, Tang Hong stood up and left, followed by the excitedly smiling Elders.
This was the first meeting in weeks that they left with smiles.

Meanwhile, hundreds of miles west of the Illusory Butterfly Sect, deep within an unnamed forest, four men could be seen lying on the ground around a crackling campfire.
Yet, only one man wearing an Alchemist's jacket was still awake as he looked up at the starry skies with his hands behind his head.
[Host, what are you thinking about?]
The mechanical voice of the System rang in Lucian's head, prompting him to yawn before saying, [Nothing.]
After a pause, he continued, [I'm merely enjoying the peace and comfo-]
Suddenly, he stopped speaking as the rustling of clothes from three directions sounded out.
Lucian sighed.
[Well… I was enjoying the peace and comfort. Now, it's time to return to work.]
[Peace and comfort are impossible to hold on to.] The System said wisely. [Not even the strongest in existence can live in peace and comfort for so long. Conflict is natural as long as life exists. Please do not fall for the illusion of true peace as that does not exist… and will never exist.] Read the latest on My Virtual Library Empire
Lucian chuckled.
[Wow, I never knew you were so deep.]
The System's voice changed to a cute young lady. [Hehe. Host, please don't say such double-meaning words. It's embarrassing!]
What do you think?
