Chapter 11 - 11 11 Come Knocking on the Door

Chapter 11: Chapter 11 Come Knocking on the Door Chapter 11: Chapter 11 Come Knocking on the Door The people outside didn’t speak, but, upon hearing someone come out, they resumed knocking on the door.

Luo Qiao stepped forward and peered through the crack of the door, identifying the person outside. She asked, “Auntie Zhao, do you need something?”

Gao Suhua, seeing that Luo Qiao didn’t open the door, said somewhat angrily, “Open the door, you stupid girl.”

Luo Qiao replied, “If Auntie Zhao doesn’t need anything, I’ll head back inside.”

Luo Qiao certainly didn’t indulge her. Gao Suhua was no easy person to deal with. A rural woman capable of switching babies was inherently immoral and selfish. There was definitely no good reason for her to come knocking at this hour.

After finally separating from the Zhao Family and acquiring her own independent household registration, she didn’t want anything to do with the Zhao Family anymore.

Gao Suhua noticed Luo Qiao was quite vigilant, and said, “Luo Qiao, your Uncle Zhao and I have thought it over all night. Although you are not our Zhao Family’s own daughter,
we did promise the Luo Family to take good care of you. Now that you are not well, your Uncle Zhao and I have decided it would be better to take you home so we can look after you properly.”

Luo Qiao sneered inwardly and said, “Auntie doesn’t need to worry about me. I can take care of myself. Since you are not my biological parents,
I don’t want to be a burden to you. I have things to take care of in my house, so I will be busy now.”

Not waiting for Gao Suhua to say anything else, Luo Qiao had already gone back inside. She would have been foolish to believe Gao Suhua’s nonsense; she wasn’t the original owner of this body.

After returning to her room, Luo Qiao listened to the commotion outside. Hearing Gao Suhua walk away while cursing under her breath, she scoffed mockingly, suspecting that Gao Suhua was up to no good.

Noticing it was getting late and making sure it was safe, she went back to her space and drew a bucket of water first, cleaning up the kitchen thoroughly. Luo Qiao didn’t have the heart to waste the leftover water and poured it onto the plot of land she had planted that morning.

Apart from malnutrition, this body didn’t have any serious issues. She believed it wouldn’t be long before she was completely rejuvenated.

After collecting some straw from behind the Bamboo Building, Luo Qiao thought the straw wouldn’t last long as fuel. She considered collecting more firewood from the mountain to store in her space later.

Currently on a bland diet, she took some rice and simmered a pot of thick rice porridge that would last several meals.

After the rice porridge was ready, she scooped out a large bowl to cool and stored the rest in a big basin, which she placed in the underground cellar. It would stay warm, so she could eat it anytime without reheating.

After stir-frying garlic eggplant and “treasure from the earth,” she drank the porridge and then left the space.

In the kitchen, she boiled a large pot of water and thoroughly cleaned and wiped down everything again. Luo Qiao had a slight obsession with cleanliness and would feel uncomfortable if things were not tidy.

The houses at the “educated youth spot” had mud interiors and stone exteriors but were topped with small black tiles—much better than the thatch roofs of some homes in the village. Since these houses were built in ’66, they were considered quite good for the village.

The courtyard Luo Qiao was living in used to house the female “educated youths,” while the neighboring courtyard previously occupied by the male “educated youths” was also vacant. Luo Qiao was quite pleased with this arrangement; living here alone made it more convenient to do as she pleased.

Actually, many families in the village had their eye on the “educated youth” houses, but the commune leaders had stated that they could either buy the houses outright or pay monthly rent.

When the villagers heard it would cost them money to live there, no one was willing to pay, and that’s how Luo Qiao got such a good deal.
