Chapter 14: Chapter 14 Change Tactics Chapter 14: Chapter 14 Change Tactics On the way, Luo Qiao kept thinking that school had already started and that she needed to find time to visit the middle school at the commune to see if she could resolve her schooling issue.

She didn’t know if it was possible to only attend exams and skip regular classes, but once the land was allotted to her, she would have more control over her time.

When she arrived at the field, the brigade leader’s wife, Qiao Lianlian, was already there and waved Luo Qiao over to work next to her.

Qiao Lianlian hadn’t stopped praising Luo Qiao to her husband since lunchtime; indeed, this young girl was truly likable and earnest, which made her quite endearing.

Luo Qiao learned quite a bit about the village affairs by chatting with Auntie Gao that afternoon at work.

As the days passed, Luo Qiao gradually came to understand Qingshan Village. Gao Suhua had come by twice during this period, but Luo Qiao had ignored her, as there was nothing Gao Suhua could do from outside a closed door.

Usually, while working, Luo Qiao would follow the brigade leader’s wife, Qiao Lianlian. Gao Suhua had tried several times to speak to Luo Qiao but had failed, nearly driving her to fury.

Now, Gao Suhua had changed her tactics, sending her daughters to cozy up to Luo Qiao, clearly harboring some malicious intent.

But Luo Qiao was now responsible for her own household registration; whatever schemes Gao Suhua had planned were pointless. She was not the same person that the Zhao Family had taken advantage of for a lifetime, using her thoroughly.

After half a month of hard work, all the village fields had been plowed, and they were ready to rest the soil for a few days before starting to plant.

Before planting, the commune organized road repairs. Each village was responsible for its own section, and all able-bodied adults in the village were assigned to assist with the commune’s road work.

The road work essentially meant smoothing out the road and filling any holes with dirt, a job that would only take a couple of days and would not interfere with the spring planting.

Some women and older children were assigned to the brigade’s warehouse to sort soybean seeds. Over these days, Luo Qiao also became more familiar with the rest of the work team.

After work that day, the brigade leader announced a day off tomorrow to tend to private affairs and prepare their allocated land for planting, as the day after tomorrow would mark the start of the spring planting, and no leave would be allowed.

The land originally retained for the educated youths was divided by the brigade leader, and Luo Qiao had been allocated two portions for her personal use. She had been tending to it a little each day after finishing work, and by now, the land had been neatly furrowed.

Behind the youth hostel, Luo Qiao had about one and a half portions of land where she intended to grow vegetables. She planned to plant sweet potatoes, potatoes, and corn on the two allotted portions, so as not to arouse envy if her vegetable crops did too well.

After all, planting vegetables on that one-and-a-half-portion land and selling them later to a state-owned business in the commune or city would bring in some cash, and since policies weren’t as strict as before, she wouldn’t be scrutinized too much.

Luo Qiao planned to make a trip to the commune the next day, hoping to find a set of junior and senior high school books and to check with the school whether she could transfer in and only attend exams without regular classes.

These days, Luo Qiao had gone back to a normal diet. In the evening, she steamed some rice, which came from her space since Qingshan Village mostly grew corn and wheat, so she never cooked rice during the day.

She made a stew with potatoes and green beans and also stir-fried some eggplant with minced garlic. After dinner, she cleaned up the kitchen. The water in the outside kitchen had already been heated up, so she took out some water and had a bath.

Just as she was about to tidy up the stuff in the courtyard and return to her room, she heard people coming down the small path. By the sound of the voices, Luo Qiao knew it had to be the girls from the Zhao Family again. Really, they were relentless.
