Chapter 13: Chapter 13 Going to Work Chapter 13: Chapter 13 Going to Work Luo Qiao, grateful that someone had spoken up for her, nodded at the woman and glanced at the one named Li Xiulan, who had just made the sarcastic comment. Just by looking at her face, she could tell she was a mean person.

When Li Xiulan heard Sun Haitang speak up for Luo Qiao, she snorted coldly and said, “Sun Haitang has something to say about everything. I’m only telling the plain truth.”

Luo Qiao replied, “I earn work points for the amount of work I do. Thank you, Auntie Xiulan, for your concern.”

Li Xiulan gave Luo Qiao a disdainful look, “Who’s concerned about you? Just don’t hold everyone back.”

The brigade leader’s wife, Qiao Lianlian, came over and said to Li Xiulan, “Save your words, better to worry about your second and third sons instead.”

Upon hearing Qiao Lianlian’s words, Li Xiulan fell silent. Her two sons were tall and strong, but it was a pity that both were lazier than the other, dodging work and lounging about all day.

By the end of the year, they didn’t earn as many work points as some of the half-grown kids, which is why at well over twenty, no family was willing to marry their daughters to such men, especially with Li Xiulan’s reputation for stirring trouble in the village.

As the crowd had nearly all arrived, the brigade leader began assigning tasks. It was now March, and the ground was slowly thawing. Today’s task was to spread the compost that had been fermenting over winter onto the fields.

In a few days, they would just have to turn the soil lightly with an iron plow before starting the spring sowing. Luo Qiao’s job today was the same as the brigade leader’s wife; after the men had delivered the fermented manure to the fields using tractors, donkey carts, and ox carts, they would spread it with shovels.

The original body was skinny, but she had worked hard on the farm and wasn’t weak. Added to that, the past few days of nourishment from the Spatial Well Water meant she could work quite efficiently.

However, the soul within this body was now Luo Qiao from another time, someone brought up in a city, someone not accustomed to such labor. Even in post-apocalyptic times, she had simply used her Special Ability to stimulate plant growth.

Though the smell of the compost was truly overpowering, having survived the apocalypse, she couldn’t afford to let others gossip about her on her first day at work, so she strived to ignore her sense of smell.

This actually earned her additional favor from the brigade leader’s wife, Qiao Lianlian, who seemed to appreciate that Luo Qiao was truly capable of supporting herself, and even shared with her several tips for farmwork.

Lu Yichen, the tractor driver of the brigade, spotted the young girl bustling about in the field from afar. He thought her thin frame might be blown away by a strong gust of wind and couldn’t help but take a few extra glances.

After the morning’s labor, Luo Qiao did feel somewhat tired. Although she had dealt with planting in her previous life, she had never done such physically demanding work before. Fortunately, the original host’s memories helped her avoid being too clumsy.

When she got home at noon, she boiled a pot of hot water in the kitchen courtyard, afraid that if the chimney didn’t smoke, it might raise others’ suspicions.

While resting, she stoked the fire until the water in the pot was hot enough, then she removed the wood, found a medium-sized bathtub from the miscellaneous items in the space, cleaned it, and then filled it with water.

After securing the front door, she moved the bathtub into the bedroom, closed the doors and windows, and took a refreshing bath to recover. She figured it would take a few days of continuous work to adjust.

Afterwards, she emptied the bathwater in the yard, cleaned the tub, and then fetched a large bowl of rice porridge from the space. Accompanied by some pickled spicy cucumbers and radish strips that she had previously made, along with the two leftover scallion pancakes from breakfast, she ate her lunch.

She took a nap in the space’s bedroom and only when she heard the gong did she come out of the space, ready to go back to work.

Locking the front door behind her, she headed to the field. The afternoon’s work was the same as the morning’s, spreading manure in the fields.
