Chapter 17 - 17 17 The Zhao Family Sisters Schemes

Chapter 17: Chapter 17 The Zhao Family Sisters’ Schemes Chapter 17: Chapter 17 The Zhao Family Sisters’ Schemes As she walked up the mountain, she saw quite a few wild greens starting to sprout. Qiao Lianlian, the wife of the team leader, had taught her a lot, and the original host also had some memories, so Luo Qiao had been picking wild greens in the fields lately.

Whenever she found something she liked to eat, she would dig some up and toss them into her basket, planning to make a meal with a wild greens filling for dumplings, and to send some to Lu Yichen as well, for she had imposed on him for several days at his house.

Today, she had also received a basket from him for free, and such debts of gratitude must be repaid. She also picked a few uncommon wild greens from the field and stored them in her space, planning to grow some in the valley for convenience in the future.

After roaming the mountain for half a day without finding anything particularly good, she gathered some common medicinal herbs like Bupleurum and dandelions. The original host had learned quite a bit about traditional Chinese medicine while working at a farm with Grandpa Yang.

Knowing the effects of these herbs, she picked some to keep on hand. These common medicinal herbs were not planted in her space, so she casually threw a couple of plants in there, as planting a few wouldn’t take up much space.

In the forest ahead, there were many dry branches, and Luo Qiao took out a sickle from her space, gathered the dry branches together, and, after ensuring it was safe, stored them in her space.

Seeing that it was getting late, she tied up a small bundle of twigs with vines, placed it on top of her basket, and headed down the mountain.

Passing through an area of weeds, she heard a rustle and carefully parted the underbrush to discover a nest of eggs, likely left behind by a wild chicken that had been startled away earlier. What a pity.

But at least the filling for tonight’s dumplings was settled, haha!

She arrived home and put everything away, only to see it was already past nine o’clock. She quickly washed up, changed into the set of clothes with the fewest patches, shouldered her basket, and made her way towards the collective farm.

Qingshan Village wasn’t too far from the collective farm, just a half-hour walk, and only an hour’s drive from the urban area. Since it was even farther to the county seat than to the city, people from this area usually went to the city with a recommendation letter for shopping.

Luo Qiao’s pace was quicker than others’, thanks to the training in her space these past days. As she was about to leave the village, she ran into Zhao Xiaoxing and Zhao Xiaocao, the Zhao Family’s third and fifth daughters.

Zhao Xiaoxing quickened her pace and caught up with Luo Qiao, asking loudly, “Luo Qiao, where are you headed?”

Luo Qiao saw several women looking over and, with a spin of her eyes, said, “I picked some medicinal herbs on the mountain and am going to the collective farm to see if they’ll buy them. Our house is running out of food, and I can’t just let myself starve to death, can I?”

Zhao Xiaocao, although not looking like much, was quicker witted than Zhao Xiaoxing and said, “Then why have you been refusing to go home with us these past few days? Don’t bother with the collective farm, come back home with us. If there’s food for one person in the Zhao Family, we won’t let you go hungry.”

She knew what her mother had in mind; as long as Luo Qiao came back with them, their family would have an extra source of income.

Luo Qiao replied, “We’re neither relatives nor close friends; I can’t trouble you. Besides, Auntie Zhao and I signed an agreement, so what does it mean for you Zhao Family Sisters to come over and persuade me to return to your family time and again?

Unless you’re afraid that the Luo Family will say you unjustly received those two hundred yuan, I can’t see anything else that would be worth your while to invite me back to your house, unless you have some ulterior motives.”

Upon hearing Luo Qiao say this, Zhao Xiaoxing, worried about the gossipmongers overhearing and affecting her mother’s plans, quickly said, “Luo Qiao, what are you talking about?

You’re just too foolish to recognize kindness— we only feared you might starve to death, which is why we kindly wanted you to return with us to the Zhao Family. Don’t be so ungrateful, hmph!”
