Chapter 18 - 18 18 Pointing Out The Commune
Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Pointing Out, The Commune Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Pointing Out, The Commune Luo Qiao laughed and said, “So I misjudged you all. Well then, let’s just forget about me going back with you to the Zhao Family. Since I’m not a daughter of the Zhao Family and don’t want to trouble others, how about you lend me some grain instead?”
Zhao Xiaoxing, who was straightforward, flared up upon hearing Luo Qiao ask for grain: “Luo Qiao, what pipe dreams are you having? We don’t have enough for ourselves, how could we possibly lend you any?”
As soon as this statement came out, Zhao Xiaocao quickly pulled on her third sister, silently cursing Zhao Xiaoxing for being such a fool.
Luo Qiao burst into loud laughter: “I knew it, how could the Zhao Family possibly care if I starve to death? Your lying skills still need practice.” After speaking, she walked away, still laughing.
Zhao Xiaoxing said with an embarrassed and annoyed face, “You’re just a child no one wants.”
Luo Qiao said loudly, “Whether I’m a child no one wants, your mother knows best. You’d better go home and ask her what she did fifteen years ago.”
Luo Qiao didn’t lower her voice on purpose when she said this; she was really getting annoyed with the Zhao Family, who had been coming to her house every other day for some time now, bothering her incessantly.
Zhao Xiaocao pulled her third sister, Zhao Xiaoxing, to prevent her from speaking further, as it was clear that she was no match for Luo Qiao, inadvertently turning it into a spectacle for the villagers to laugh at.
She could see that Luo Qiao had deliberately spoken this way to let the villagers know that the Zhao Family had been secretly visiting her, trying to get her to go back with them to the Zhao Family. If something were to happen to her, wouldn’t it mean the Zhao Family had schemed against a lone girl?
The Zhao Family Sisters hadn’t attended school much, aside from Zhao Xiaocao, who had finished primary school. The other sisters had only attended for a year or two. Zhao Xiaocao had wanted to go to middle school, but Gao Suhua disagreed, so that was the end of it.
Zhao Xiaotao, the eldest in the Zhao Family, was already twenty-one years old. Due to her high dowry demands and picky nature, she had only managed to get engaged this year and was set to get married next month.
Villagers said that these days Gao Suhua was busy finding a match for Zhao Xiaomei, the second daughter. But the talks had fallen through over the dowry issue, and rumors had begun to swirl with the slightest provocation.
Zhao Xiaomei’s situation had been the talk of the fields lately. Among the six Zhao sisters, she was considered the prettiest. Everyone in the village figured Gao Suhua wouldn’t settle for anything less than a hefty price for her.
Zhao Xiaoxing and Zhao Xiaomei were twins, but Zhao Xiaoxing had been matched with Zhang Changping from the neighboring village since they were young. The arrangement was made because Zhao Pulin had once saved Zhang Changping’s grandfather, leading to their families agreeing to the union when they were only children.
The high bride price previously was for the only male heir of the family, Zhao Guibao. Now that Zhao Guibao had left with his relatives from the city, Gao Suhua still ruined negotiations over the dowry, and everyone had been making fun of her behind her back.
Luo Qiao thought to herself that if her own biological daughter was being used to collect a dowry, let alone an outsider like her, the Zhao Family definitely would not be so eager to have her return to them without some ulterior motive. They also didn’t want the villagers to find out, always choosing to come to persuade her after work when no one was around.
Following Luo Qiao, Lu Yichen thought to himself that he was not too dumb after all. That day, he had overheard the conversation between the Zhao sisters, and he certainly had no fondness for them.
When Luo Qiao arrived at the commune, she first familiarized herself with the layout before entering the only traditional Chinese medicine shop in the commune, asking, “Excuse me, does this place buy medicinal herbs?”
A young man in the shop responded, “Have they been processed?”
Luo Qiao answered, “No, I’m just here today to find out if you do.”
The young man asked curiously, “What kind do you have?”
What do you think?
