Chapter 135: Chapter 136: Discovering the Truth
Shao He breathed a sigh of relief as the child in her arms gradually stopped crying. She glanced out at the pouring rain through the window, her brows knitted into a frown as her mood became gloomy as well.
It had started to rain without her noticing.
Qing Shan, shivering with cold, rubbed her arms outside the door. The weather was just too abnormal; it had been clear skies moments ago, and now it was pouring down without warning.
Just then, a knock came from the door. Qing Shan picked up an umbrella next to her and opened it as she stepped outside.
“Who is it?”
“Open the door! Open the door for the Marquis!”
Through the crack, Qing Shan saw that the person knocking was Chu Yu. She chose not to open the door but turned and walked away instead.
She knew her mistress did not want to see this man and thought he would leave before long.
However, the knocking persisted. Qing Shan, left with no choice, knocked on the door and said, “Miss, have you gone to sleep?”
“What is it?” came Shao He’s languid voice, suggesting she was about to sleep.
Qing Shan spoke up, “Marquis Chu is here. He’s been knocking persistently at the door. Shall we let him in?”
“Tell her I’ve already gone to sleep. If there’s anything, we can discuss it tomorrow at Anji Hall.”
“Yes.”
Qing Shan approached the front door once more and called out loudly, “Marquis, please return. Our miss has already retired for the night.”
“Open the door, open it!”
Chu Yu seemed maddened, not listening to anything Qing Shan said, his mind set on seeing Shao He.
“My miss won’t let you in. It’s best you don’t waste your efforts, Marquis,” said Qing Shan, clearly annoyed.
Chu Yu clung to her like a stubborn plaster. He was the one who had driven her away in the first place, and now he was frantically following her around.
Chu Yu was drenched from head to toe, his red eyes fixed desperately on the door in front of him, as if he wanted to tear it down.
He glanced at the high wall and, with a light tap of his feet, leaped up. Just as he steadied himself, a fierce palm wind struck him, and Chu Yu, caught off guard, was knocked down.
A loud “bang” resounded as Chu Yu fell clumsily to the ground outside the courtyard.
He looked up angrily at the figure in black on the wall and asked in a sharp voice, “Who are you?”
The person on the wall did not respond, only watched him coldly as if ready to strike him down again should he dare to climb up once more.
“Hah, you don’t need to say anything. I can guess. It’s Pei Huaian who sent you to guard here, right?”
He should have realized earlier. Aside from Pei Huaian, who else had the skill to infiltrate this place undetected?
The other party still did not speak, just kept his gaze firmly on Chu Yu.
“Well then, don’t blame me for being impolite,” Chu Yu said through gritted teeth.
No sooner had he finished speaking than he charged forward.
The sound of swift swordplay flashed by, as the two figures tangled in a blur, their movements too quick to discern.
“Clang!” The sound of clashing swords rang out, jarring in the silent night, and then both men stumbled back several steps.
“Ugh,” Chu Yu spat out blood, his face pale and his hand holding the sword shaking incessantly.
“Your skills are indeed impressive.”
Cleaning the blood from the corner of his mouth, Chu Yu looked at the person in black in front of him, surprised that Pei Huaian had sent such a formidable guard.
As the rain gradually stopped, Chu Yu approached the door once again, pounding on it relentlessly, the piercing noise exceptionally clear in the quiet night.
“Who is it? In the middle of the night, can’t you let people sleep?”
“Exactly, what’s with the disturbance!”
“If it’s really that bad, just move away, how are we supposed to rest with this going on!”
Hearing the disgruntled murmurs from inside, Chu Yu knocked even harder on the door, neighbors’ curses drifting over.
Qing Shan knew trouble was brewing and was about to knock when suddenly the door swung open and Shao He stepped out, clad in her clothes.
“Miss, Marquis Chu is out there making a scene. If this continues, it might arouse public anger,” whispered Qing Shan.
“Let me see,” said Shao He, unsure of why Chu Yu was acting so strangely tonight but aware that his incessant knocking wasn’t a solution.
Seeing Shao He emerge, Chu Yu immediately approached her and grabbed her wrist in desperation, “You finally came out!”
At first, Shao He was taken aback, but then, after regaining her composure, she shook off his hand, her expression one of disgust, “What madness is this now, Marquis?”
She noticed something off about Chu Yu; his gaze seemed to carry a mix of guilt and pity.
Chu Yu rushed up to her again, demanding, “Was it you who saved me back then, wasn’t it?
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner? Why didn’t you take care of me yourself instead of letting Luo Jiner do it?”
“Let… let go…” Shao He struggled fiercely, but no matter how hard she tried, she could not budge him an inch.
“Answer me, why!” Chu Yu grew more agitated as he spoke, shaking her shoulders vigorously.
He was such a fool for not recognizing his own savior and even mistaking her, hurting her badly because of it.
Remembering what he had done to her, his heart filled with remorse and pain.
Shao He felt a sharp pain in her shoulder blade, her complexion turning deathly pale.
Having heard Chu Yu’s words, she understood why he was acting so irrationally; he had learned the truth of the matter. A mocking smile curved her lips.
“When the Marquis was questioning me, have you ever considered that I repeatedly said I was the one who saved you, was there ever a time you believed me?” Shao He said with a cold laugh.
Chu Yu paused, staring at the woman before him, his heart a turmoil of mixed emotions—guilt and self-reproach overwhelming him, making it hard to breathe.
What do you think?
