Chapter 60: Chapter 61 What a Good Girl
“Pei Huaian? How could he possibly know where we live?” Shao He’s beautiful brows slightly furrowed, showing a look of surprise in her eyes.
Even Yun Qian didn’t know she was staying here. How did Pei Huaian find out? Could it be that he had also sent someone to secretly follow her, which is how he knew her residence? @@novelbin@@
Qing Shan sighed, worrying this was a bad omen!
“Miss, this jade pendant was actually delivered to the shop by Ah Mo, who is an attendant of Young Master Pei, a few days ago. This servant was too busy at the time to remember to tell you, and only remembered yesterday when amusing the young master, thinking this Warm Jade was gentle enough to be worn by him.”
Hearing this, Shao He secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Looking at the Warm Jade in her hands, since it had already been sent here, there was certainly no reason to send it back.
But why would Pei Huaian be so kind to her? Could it be because of his leg ailment? However, he generally does not seem to care whether the injury on his leg heals or not.
Seeing the deep thoughts, Qing Shan politely coughed and said, “Miss, you should wash up first.”
Shao He came back to her senses, casting aside the matter without further suspicion.
Qingxia and Qing Shan simultaneously breathed a sigh of relief.
After eating, Xiao Linzhang started to act up again. Shao He took a few people to stroll in the courtyard, taking a day off with Yun Qian to go seek assistance from Jhiang Yijia regarding the household registration.
Having a rare idle day since entering the residence, she hadn’t really had a chance to look around the yard properly.
The group strolled along the cobblestone path and came to the pavilion.
“Miss, this place really has picturesque scenery; no wonder so many scholars and writers like to live reclusively in paradises like this. It’s truly enviable!” Qingxia stood by the lake, looking at the glittering surface of the water, filled with emotions.
“It is indeed beautiful.”
Shao He replied lightly, her gaze falling on the courtyard next to the willow trees by the lake.
Following her gaze, Qing Shan’s heart skipped a beat. Could it be that the Miss had suspicions?
“You said this is a secondary residence, next to it is a larger residence with five courtyards, yet that house seems uninhabited?”
“Perhaps it has an owner,” Qingxia replied.
“Have you ever seen the owner of this courtyard?”
Shao He thought might be because she left early and returned late, which had kept her from encountering the people across from her.
But with such a large residence, there would surely be some servants and other workers, yet she had never heard any voices coming from inside, which was indeed unusual.
Qingxia’s eyes darted about, regretting her hasty words.
Respectfully, Qing Shan replied, “Miss, don’t listen to her nonsense. Maybe some wealthy people own many properties, only purchasing them to leave them uninhabited.”
Shao He nodded, not pursuing the question further.
Recalling the incident of being followed last night, her expression turned serious as she instructed them, “Be more cautious these days. It’s inevitable that some villains will come knocking.”
“Miss, don’t worry. I and Qingxia will be more vigilant,” Qing Shan quickly agreed.
…
Leaving the residence, Shao He immediately headed to the Fang Family.
Previously, Jhiang Yijia had told her the address of the Fang Family, and Shao He easily found the place.
Upon her arrival, the servants there informed her that Jhiang Yijia and Fang Jue had gone to a temple outside the city to pray for blessings and might not return until evening. With no other choice, she had to go alone to the Jhiang Residence.
The Jhiang Residence faced south with a vast compound, high walls, and a bustling gateway.
Lady Jhiang, knowing of her arrival, personally came out to welcome her into the residence and instructed the maid to serve tea and pastries.
“Doctor Shao, how do you have time to visit the Jhiang Residence today? Why not stay for lunch before you leave?” Lady Jhiang smiled warmly, making small talk with Shao He.
Shao He nodded slightly, declining Lady Jhiang’s hospitality, and said politely, “Thank you for the invitation, but I am here to seek Master Jhiang’s assistance with a matter.”
Lady Jhiang looked surprised. “Doctor, have you encountered some difficult issue?”
Shao He shook her head, “It’s about household registration.”
“Household registration?”
Lady Jhiang frowned, taking a moment to understand what she meant before her expression became serious. “Doctor, are you here concerning the registration for your child?”
“Exactly, so I was hoping to ask Master Jhiang for help.”
“There’s little I can do about it,” Lady Jhiang sighed with a troubled look. “The issue of registration is very complicated and even the Marquis has pressured the Minister of Revenue as well as my husband, with the Imperial Censor keeping watch … ” she glanced at Shao He, then hesitated.
Upon hearing this, Shao He instantly understood. They say that each level of official rank is an added layer of pressure; what more when the Marquis himself intervenes, then naturally, no one dares to defy his will. It seems the matter of the registration is indeed troublesome.
She never liked to impose on others. Since the Jhiang Family couldn’t help, she had no choice but to look elsewhere.
Lady Jhiang looked apologetic and didn’t know what else to say, but she was truly powerless in this matter.
“Doctor Shao … ”
“Lady Jhiang, don’t feel guilty. Being able to help is kindness; not being able to is the norm. I will not insist on anything. It makes no sense to offend the Marquis for my sake,” Shao He said gently, waving her hand.
Relieved upon hearing this, Lady Jhiang, who had not known Shao He well, admired her openness and intelligence. This Doctor Shao indeed seemed more insightful than most women.
“Then, Doctor, you might have to look elsewhere. If you need any silver, just let me know,” Lady Jhiang said, hoping to offer some little help.
“Thank you.” Shao He bowed her head in gratitude, not dwelling on the issue, and stood to take her leave.
Lady Jhiang watched her silhouette disappear, sighing deeply, “Such a nice girl, why does the Marquis have to make things difficult for her?”
Shao He exited the Jhiang Residence, raising her hand to shield her eyes from the glaring sun, leisurely walking down the street.
Having thought she could rely on the Jhiang Family to secure a household registration, she now knew she would have to find another solution.
She had just stepped out of the Jhiang Residence when she heard footsteps beside her.
“Isn’t this Doctor Shao? What a coincidence.” A mocking voice rose behind her.
What do you think?
